Marketing for Disney's new Solo: A Star Wars Story spin-off film is beginning to kick into high gear, and some new toys give us yet another look at the vehicles and characters that may be seen in the film. Just today, Reddit member Brodilla noticed that an upcoming Mattel Hot Wheels toy release features a vehicle based on a design originally created for George Lucas' 1977 Star Wars. Also we get a name for one of the starships that we've seen in the Solo trailer a few weeks ago. Read on for More.

We’ve seen in the past how original Star Wars concept art can be used for the inspiration of many of the vehicles, characters, locations and props in the Star Wars films. Well it appears that a new Mattel Hot Wheels toy shows a glaringly obvious resemblances to some concept art created by former Lucasfilm and Industrial Light and Magic VFX designer, Colin Cantwell. Cantwell was one of original lead starship designers for Star Wars that created an incredible array of concepts for the original Star Wars series of films (you can read our interview with Cantwell from July 2017 here). While some Cantwell original designs were influential, some weren't used in the Star Wars series.

Here's a first look at the Imperial Arrestor Cruiser from Solo: A Star Wars Story. The design gives the ship a very unique look. Perhaps, it will be used as a tractor beam type ship in the film.

Cantwell originally pitched the concept of that ship directly to George Lucas to be used in the original 1977 Star Wars film as a Star Destroyer, but it was ultimately scrapped in favor of a completely different version.

Also the new Hot Wheels toys give us a better look at the Imperial Hauler:

You probably remember that last May we showed you quite a few Solo concept arts that leaked on ebay and one of the ships from there was this Imperial Hauler. We've also spotted it in the Solo Trailer.

From the concept it is evident that the wings will be moving in an upright positing during landings. Also when in flight the wings can extend so that the Hauler could haul another ship or cargo.

From the trailer, the starship's name and this concept art we can speculate that in the scene seen in the trailer, Han will steal a Hauler and release some kind of exploding cargo that will cause the explosion in the mountains. Or we could be totally wrong and the footage was intentionally edited this way so that we are misled to believe that Han is piloting that ship. I guess we will find out in less than 100 days.

Make sure to visit Colin Cantwell's website for more information on his concepts and projects HERE.

The way the wings function on the Imperial Hauler remind me of a Vulture Droid. I hope we see it as a Lego set!

I think the Imperial Arrestor Cruiser has too many satellites, but other than that, it's a cool looking ship.

The Arrestor does look like a concept from the 70-80s. Like an initial-far-from-final concept. The "radar dishes" are what really ruins it. They should have been put elsewhere, like on top of the main section.
The hauler looks fine - typical OT Star Wars ship.

I'm liking the Arrestor - it's got a real 70's vibe thanks to it's glorious @Colin Cantwell design origins. How great is it that the design finally gets realised over 40yrs after being conceived!

The Hauler is works for what it is - simple, functional and effective. Not every ship in a GFFA needs to strive for iconic status.

@Star Dude and @Lock_S_Foils ... what do you guys think? I know you’re both ship geeks like me.

I like the Arrestor design. Hauler - not so much, doesn't look Star Wars-y IMHO, but maybe I'll change my mind when I'll see more of it.

@Lazarus Dei Thanks for the tag! @Star Dude Looking for your help here too.....I am excited for the new ships in SOLO and also the look at some planets we had only heard about or seen in Rebels (Kessel).

As far as the hauler that scene looks like the northern hemisphere of Kessel ("spices" mined in the North by Wookiee slaves, Southern was lush where the Royal Family lived in luxury of course). If you note in the first shot that cargo container is being towed by the three other ships in the upper left, you can see the tow cables. So if Han/team is indeed in the Hauler trailing that towing operation, maybe they steal whatever is in that container and in their escape blow something up?

Love the look of the "Hauler" - has anyone heard a designation/manufacturer of this yet? I pulled up an old video from TMZ that has behind the scenes drawings of the Hauler, with Stormtroopers in it, if that is the case then it prob is manufactured by Sienar Systems or another Imperial-owned company.....that Hauler has a certain look/feel of another great sci-fi director of mine, Ridley Scott. I loved Scott's look of the Colonial Marines in Aliens, with utilitarian ships, that were never brand new but well-worn, that just made sense according to their design. That is why I loved the U-Wing so much in R1.

So is the "Arrestor" based upon Cantwell's original design? Wow that is cool!

Great thread, looking for everyone else's thoughts on this!!

SWNN had a nice overview of the leaked concept art back in May 2017, here it is.....https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/201...the-han-solo-movie-have-surfaced-on-ebay.html

So exciting to see new ships!

    I have to admit:

I kind of giggled when I saw the Cruiser because I've seen that a while ago in the concept art above.

The design then, and now, reminded me of a sort of Star Destroyer puckering up for a kiss.

    Because ships need love, too.

   (star destroyer)

The more I look at the Hauler, the more it reminds me of a more functional BSG design - not a Raider, though the wing configuration bears a resemblance - but more the fact it's been designed to be a practical work-horse style craft.

I think the container crashes and that's what causes the explosion. Maybe the smaller ships tried to hold/pull the Hauler and Han detached the cargo to escape. If that's the case, it looks like the heist failed. Who knows, though. This could be a lot of things.

So here’s my first shot: That Hauler is produced by Kuat Drive Yards. Why? Because all those armored, rounded and slit-window elements and the weapons remind me very strongly of this AT-AT version:

Wonder if the Arrestor is an experimental ship used to hunt down Smugglers that can escape normal radar from Imperial capital ships?

Reminds me of the 80's blue space lego!

I love 70's/80's syfy/fantasy concept art and illustrations (more personal and artistic than actual digital works, although there are really cool illustrators out there).
So, what can I say about Arrestor? Just love it! Really cool design with a retro classic style!!!
And the Hauler would be so cool to be the front cargo from the Millennium Falcon to complete this "new" look.

I do hope @Colin Cantwell gets the recognition for this in the credits to the film. And, as an added bonus, a bit of pocket money.

Yeah @Star Dude it makes more sense the Hauler being a KDY creation vs Sienar systems......for some reason I thought that KDY merged or was shut down but not the case......we desperately need a "Ultimate Visual Guide" for SOLO.....!!!!!

Yes. It reminds me of the AT-DP from Rebels. I think it is based on a Mcquarrie design. AT-DP_Concept_Art_1.jpg unbrEbP.png
