Space Gandhi would be a little too much. But, why not an improved version of Ben Kenobi? He ignites the lightsaber only twice in ANH. I would like to see a movie that doesn't rely on some cheapy "wow" effect, and goes building a strong character like Yoda and Ben were.

I agree that Luke shouldn't be quick to action but emulating Ben in ANH would be the wrong direction. Ben's infrequent use of his lightsaber is good if you're building up to a rather fierce some display and that didn't occur in ANH, mostly due to the age of the actors involved and technological limitations. Ben poked at Vader a few times and then promptly committed suicide by Sith: I would prefer none of that for Luke.

That's not to say that I want Luke flipping and spinning all over the place, I don't want any of the characters to do that, but I would rather not have an inactive mentor character.

I want to see him fight with his light saber and use the force minimally, but yeah, no "uber" Luke

I think there is going to be some level of uber. I mean they've already demonstrated Force Powers we've never seen before via Kylo. Granted we don't know that he learned these abilities from Luke or Snoke, but I think it's safe to assume in Luke's maturation and his study at the 1st Jedi Temple, he has some new abilities. And we'll see new abilities from Snoke... there's needs to be some parity between the two and since Snoke is ancient I kind of feel like Luke needs to be powered up. I can agree that he doesn't have to do Yoda-flips (honestly I think Yoda only did that because of his size) but a LS is a weapon of a Jedi. I honestly thought we might get a Luke that does this

And I wouldn't mind because it would be something new, and I would assume that Snoke would have tricks up his sleeve too. But I think we're going to see new stuff and it's going to register as "uber", but as long as it has plausibility within the story line I won't mind.

I don't want to see Luke Skywalker be another Obi-Wan Kenobi, whether it is an "improved" version or not. I want him to be an older Luke Skywalker.

Me too, and from what we already saw, there's no risk to have a passive character.

I wasn't saying I want an exact copy of Ben. It was just an example: Ben seemed "uberly" powerful even without being involved in some fancy action sequence. Right now I can imagine Luke only as a "modern version" of this type of character, because it fit perfectly what we already saw in the OT. That means: a character who barely enlights his lightsaber, and use the Force with persuasive intentions rather than take and throw himself into a battle. If you ask, I would prefer an hesitant Luke who struggles throughout the movie to solve things without using his ligtsaber, and then, when forced (and I expect a duel with Kylo Ren), here we go with green lights and coreography. But I'd rather bet on a creative use of the Force. In every case, most of the prequels' fans would be disappointed.

I kinda get what you're saying.
Kenobi ignites his saber twice, and each time there's significant finality to it. In the Cantina, he cuts off Ponda Baba's arm and immediately disengages (as he should, brandishing a lightsaber isn't a wise idea, even that far out in the rim). On the Death Star, he does so knowing it's the ultimate sacrifice. We see a similar finality and efficiency in Rebels.

Every single action Luke has in combat (if any) needs to have purpose and conviction. So, more of this:

    And less of this:

Absolutely what I meant. And, to be honest, I would kill to have a sword fight like that one from Rebels in Ep8. It has that western feeling and a lot of deepness as it builds up the characters' relationship before the actual fight, with a touch of bitter irony that made it one of the greatest moments in Rebels.

If there will be a Luke/Snoke last fight, I hope it will be something like that, and not a Marvel-like ultimate battle.

Can we get a Lyft Luke though? ;)

I think Luke should be more powerful than he was in VI. I mean he's supposedly been studying for 30 years, he should be at least as powerful as a fully trained Jedi.

After 30 years of study, meditation, and learning at the temple, Luke is likely to be the most powerful Jedi we've ever seen on the screen and appropriately so if Snoke turns out to be ancient and powerful force user also. It will be necessary for balance in the movie that neither Luke nor Snoke have the ability to completely overpower one another (just as I suspect that there'll be parity between Kylo and Rey, Finn and Phasma). When any one element in those binary is easily over powered it prevents us from developing tension in wondering who will prevail.

I was absolutely dissapointed though with Yoda'as 2000 rpm ligt saber weilding against both Dooku and Palpatine. Rumors about Luke dispatching 5 or so Knights of Ren in short time makes me worry.:D

Yeah, I had the same thoughts. Hopefully "short time" means "These scrubs don't stand a chance" and not "Watch out for Hurricane Luke!"

I want to see Luke create a black hole with the force that swallows an entire FO fleet :p. lol.

Actually, I would settle for mass mind trick. He just says surrender, waves his hand, and entire battalions of ST's, Fleets and Force enemy's give up and surrender to him.

But that's one of the best fights in the saga. I don't need omnipotent Luke but being good with the Sabre if he needs to.

Sorry, what do you mean- what's the biggest fight in the saga?

And that's what I'm saying- he wouldn't be bad with a saber. He would be incredibly efficient. Just now flashy.

I said the Anakin Obi fight is one of the best fights in the saga. The picture you showed highlights their skill not with twirling but in their connection to the Force. Light Sabre fights aren't just kendo matches, they are spiritual tests in which the fighters are aware of not just what is happening but will happen next.

    :D
In fact Neil deGrasse Tyson said that during that blowing up of a Starkiller base....the destablized Starkiller base had so much energy stored in its core ( more than enough to blow up entire star system) that it should have not just ignited fusion and became a star, but in fact should have colapsed into a Black Hole.

He also said BB-8 should be impossible to move on sand during its spherical shape.

I think he is in secrecy Darth Treck.

Seeing a 60-something yo man doing those tricks and flips would be kinda weird. Imagine Mark Hamill fighting a CGI Snoke by swinging like Tarzan over the lava...

Hm, I totally agree with what most of you guys are thinking how Luke should be presented. The powerful, wise and firm as a rock force wielder without the desire to do any flashy mumbo-jumbo.

But when @Just Passing Through brought up “Force Storm” something clicked and I was thinking about mostly passive, but nonetheless very powerful in the force beings and how they could react if seriously provoked (I’m looking at you Bendu), a tiny little voice in my head says …
