Just compiling a list of unanswered questions from the ST ahead of the release of TROS. Got anything I missed?

How did Maz get Luke's lightsaber?
What's the deal with Maz? (She knows about the force and knew that the saber was calling to Rey)
What's with Luke's lightsaber? It calls to people?
How did Kylo Ren even know that the saber was Luke's old one? As far as we know it hasn't been seen since Bespin.
What's the deal with Snoke? (Where did he come from? Where was he during the reign of the Empire, etc.)
What's the deal with Luke's missing students?
What's the truth about Rey's parents? (That is, if it's not what Kylo claimed, which I'm fine with)
Why did Rey see what she saw in the "forceback" vision? Why see Bespin? Luke's hand on R2?

How did Maz get Luke's lightsaber? Scavenger retrieved it. Takodana is close to Bespin. How exactly she got it is just by changing of hands, or maybe Han gave it to her. Something along those lines.

What's the deal with Maz? (She knows about the force and knew that the saber was calling to Rey) - She's been around for quite a long time. She tells Rey she can feel the Force.

What's with Luke's lightsaber? It calls to people? It doesn't call to people. It just called to Rey.

How did Kylo Ren even know that the saber was Luke's old one? As far as we know it hasn't been seen since Bespin. He collects things. He knows

What's the deal with Snoke? (Where did he come from? Where was he during the reign of the Empire, etc.) Need to read the Aftermath books.

What's the deal with Luke's missing students? Don't know. Not sure it;'s really entirely important.

What's the truth about Rey's parents? (That is, if it's not what Kylo claimed, which I'm fine with) TROS will explain it.

Why did Rey see what she saw in the "forceback" vision? Why see Bespin? Luke's hand on R2? It's what opens her up to a larger world. There was actually more to the Bespin part of the vision, but it was cut. She was suppose to see Vader and Luke.

I mean no disrespect, but none of your answers are satisfying.

How did Maz get Luke's lightsaber? Scavenger retrieved it. Takodana is close to Bespin. How exactly she got it is just by changing of hands, or maybe Han gave it to her. Something along those lines.
That's just a guess. This is the same as Palpatine showing up without explanation. Luke's lightsaber shows up in a box in the basement of a bar owned by Maz, who is also just generically mysterious. If Maz had some other lightsaber you could say that there are lightsabers floating around the galaxy changing hands from collectors or scavengers, but this is Luke's lightsaber that we saw fall on Bespin decades before. This is similar to bringing a supposedly dead character back to life without an explanation.

What's the deal with Maz? (She knows about the force and knew that the saber was calling to Rey) - She's been around for quite a long time. She tells Rey she can feel the Force.
The movie states that, but a big deal is made of her but nothing is revealed about her. How did she know who the lightsaber had belonged to? Did it call out to her?

What's with Luke's lightsaber? It calls to people? It doesn't call to people. It just called to Rey.
Which is also unheard of in Staw Wars. Is this exclusive to lightsabers or can a Jedi's toothbrush call out to Rey? Screwdriver? Blaster? Anything? It didn't call out to Luke, its previous owner's son.

How did Kylo Ren even know that the saber was Luke's old one? As far as we know it hasn't been seen since Bespin. He collects things. He knows
How? Presumably, it was lost since before he was born. Who would be able to identify it?

What's the deal with Snoke? (Where did he come from? Where was he during the reign of the Empire, etc.) Need to read the Aftermath books.
It's pathetic that the audience should have to read related material to find out anything of substance about one of the main characters of the series.

What's the deal with Luke's missing students? Don't know. Not sure it;'s really entirely important.
How is that not important? There are other people capable of using the force that may either be a threat or an ally and they are just ignored. Finding one person who can use the force is super important in these movies but these people are apparently expendable.

What's the truth about Rey's parents? (That is, if it's not what Kylo claimed, which I'm fine with) TROS will explain it.
    Maybe.

Why did Rey see what she saw in the "forceback" vision? Why see Bespin? Luke's hand on R2? It's what opens her up to a larger world. There was actually more to the Bespin part of the vision, but it was cut. She was suppose to see Vader and Luke.
How does this do anything to open her up to a larger world? It shows the audience some cool things but for the character that is actually experiencing it, it's a bunch of out-of-context material. What good does it do her to see a hallway in Cloud City? Even if she had seen Luke or Vader, how does that help her? One is a stranger and the other is long dead. How does watching her parents leave help her? How does seeing Kylo Ren and the KoR help her? How does seeing a hooded figure put his hand on a droid help her? I feel like that whole thing was merely for the audience.

It is likely Anakin’s blue lightsaber was Ben Solo’s saber:

    38682248-BC72-4409-AAB4-02EC1F6FEF37.jpeg F28087C0-8BF5-4F07-B186-CB4F82740689.png A6AE0E6C-5D3C-4CD6-B98B-04679E3A8115.jpeg

I suspect Luke retrieved the lightsaber from Bespin much like he did in EU/Legends for Mara Jade. Only instead Ben got it in the NU.

I'm 99% that's not the case. I'll dig them up later, but if you go looking for pictures of Ben's lightsaber in that scene in TLJ or the prop used, it's Kylo Ren's lightsaber without the cross guard vents and a lighter color. The theory being that he just modified his existing saber.

So, I think there's a pretty interesting discussion to be had between questions that may have been answered in transmedia, and if it's worth answering them for a wider cinema-going audience.

For instance, we have a decent idea of how the First Order was founded, etc.

But casual moviegoers have almost no context to them. Now, my guess is that they'll just be Empire 2.0 for the rest of the trilogy (which if fine, btw) but even just a sprinkling of more context could do them wonders.

Same goes for the Resistance, particularly in what happens between TLJ and TROS. We have some idea thanks to the new books/comics coming out, but will we get any sort of allusion to past events, even if it's just to add to the illusion of the passage of time (think "the bounty hunter we ran into on Ord Mantell" line in Empire, or ROTJ's Taanab reference.

I have no idea. Kylo has Vader's helmet. He must have went around collecting items from Vader's past. It's possible he somehow had the lightsaber too before Maz got it.

Chirrut and Baze (Guardians of the Whills) from Rogue One had a knowledge of the Force but were not Jedi (or Sith). My thinking is, the ability to tap into the Force isn't just an all or nothing ability, there must be a strata. Some will have a natural proficiency, and some just a mild connection.

I'm not sure if Maz actually uses the Force, or if someone that old just perceives familiar patterns over time. I wouldn't want it all spelled out specifically. Leaving some things ambiguous leads to interesting conversations like this one.

I think it's more the Force calling out through something, like the cave on Dagobah "called" to Luke.

I used to think he was Plagueis, but it doesn't look like that is true. I don't mind being wrong. Definitely not the first time. I thought Vader was lying about being Luke's father.

Since we see the Emperor coming back in some way, he's probably more of just a Dooku type. Someone used and disposable. There's still another rmovie. I wouldn't want all the answers before then.

My guess is they are the Knights of Ren. I think that' what most people think.

Rey's parents was a lesson Rey had to learn. She wanted to identify herself through other people, first her parents, then looking to Luke, and even a connection to Kylo. In the end, no one else can tell you who you are. That comes from within. By the end of TLJ, she has a pretty good idea of what her role is and her place in the Resistance. Her parents could end up being someone significant in Star Wars, maybe not, but it wouldn't negate the lesson she learned about becoming your own person.

I think it's also interesting to contrast it with Luke finding out Vader was his father. While Rey is longing for someone to identify with, Luke found a connection that was the worst thing he could have learned.

The Force binds everything together. Luke had a vision in the cave similar to his eventual confrontation with Vader. The past echos into the future. She sees glimpses of what happened before and what possibly could happen. Always in motion the future is.

How did Maz get Luke's lightsaber?

An interesting question, looking forward to the answer. But it doesn't really matter for the story. The saber fell down a hole, someone found it. That's enough for now.

What's the deal with Maz? (She knows about the force and knew that the saber was calling to Rey)

Same as the previous question. It's a fun question to ask, but it's not really essential. There are lots of non-Jedi force-sensitives (Lyra Erso, the Guardians of the Whills, etc.)

What's with Luke's lightsaber? It calls to people?

I think this is pretty self-explanatory. The Force calls to Rey through the saber. Also, sabers have always had a spiritual connection to their users via the crystals. It's more than just a weapon.

How did Kylo Ren even know that the saber was Luke's old one? As far as we know it hasn't been seen since Bespin.

Never thought about this. But I assume, since he's such a disciple of Vader, he knows the lightsaber from Anakin

What's the deal with Snoke? (Where did he come from? Where was he during the reign of the Empire, etc.)

This one I actually believe is essential to the story. Some people say, "But we didn't know who the Emperor was!" It's apples and oranges.

If I start a story by saying, "There was an evil king who ruled the kingdom," you don't need to know where he came from or who he is. It's the beginning of the story.

But if the heroes defeat the evil king, and everything is apparently peaceful, but then you turn the page and there's another evil king that appears with no explanation, that's a problem.

What's the deal with Luke's missing students?

We know some went with Kylo. According to previews, we'll get some answers in Soule's upcoming comic.

What's the truth about Rey's parents? (That is, if it's not what Kylo claimed, which I'm fine with)

I'm one of those people who hopes that Kylo is lying. Or, at least, that it's not the whole truth. The whole "anybody can be a hero" thing is a great real world message. But the Star Wars Saga is a generational myth. The idea of a hero with no connection to the past just doesn't fit the tone of the saga.

Why did Rey see what she saw in the "forceback" vision? Why see Bespin? Luke's hand on R2?

Well, it seems that all these things turn out to be important to her story. Right? Her story is intimately connected to Luke and Kylo, so she sees history of this conflict. The conflict between Luke and Vader and how it grows into the conflict between Luke and Kylo.
    --- Double Post Merged, Oct 31, 2019, Original Post Date: Oct 31, 2019 ---
Spoilery info from an official upcoming comic book preview:

According to the preview of Soule's "Rise of Kylo Ren #2," the Knights of Ren existed before Ben fell to the Dark Side. Luke and Ben fight them together at some point. It also says that some of Luke's students chase Kylo. So it appears that the KoR existed before Kylo took Luke's students, and perhaps the surviving students weren't actually even Kylo's allies.

To me, Maz having and giving the lightsaber to Rey is like Han having and giving it to Luke. It would be like this:

Ben and Luke hire Han to take them to Alderaan
While in flight, Han takes the saber out of a drawer and hands it to Luke.
Han: I think this was used by the people you're talking about. The Jedi? Whatever. You want it?
Obi Wan: Where did you get this?
Han: It's a long story. We're coming up on Alderaan. I have to go check something.
    Never mentioned again.

That's what I feel like happened with Maz and Rey.
    --- Double Post Merged, Oct 31, 2019, Original Post Date: Oct 31, 2019 ---
I should also add that when Luke touches the saber he has a vision and sees:

    An empty hallway on Mustafar
Padme looking at the Jedi temple in flames (from behind)
Darth vader choking the captain of the Tantive IV
Darth Vader standing with some stormtroopers
His aunt and uncle's bodies back home
Darth Vader coming toward him on Bespin

It didn’t see the vents (quillions) on Kylo’s blue lightsaber in TLJ but rather Anakin’s Sentinel style hilt.

    1. You can't call something apples to oranges then use an apples to oranges comparison yourself. The next page would have to also start with "And 30 years later a new evil king rose to power". Well, it wouldn't be the next page it would be the next book too.

    2. I don't get this. How could it not fit? She has a connection. She's Luke's last student. She holds the legacy lightsaber. She co-pilots the falcon with Chewy. Leia and Han were surrogate parental figures. It's a great message anywhere and honestly, the whole needing a special name connection thing is lame. It's tired outdated and predictable from a mile and a half. The tone isn't about a name. It's about a theme. A theme of good triumphing over evil against seemingly insurmountable odds. Luke threw down his lightsaber in protest of killing his father assuring his own death to avoid letting hate and evil consume him. If Rey does the same general thing, how does that not fit the tone just because she isn't a Skywalker or Solo by birth?
    --- Double Post Merged, Oct 31, 2019, Original Post Date: Oct 31, 2019 ---
    But it's nothing like that.
    Quite literally.

Maz is a collector. She is old. She is basically Chirrut in terms of not being able to use the force but able to feel it and believe in it.
She probably recognized it as a lightsaber then realized if it came from Bespin, what it must be. It's not that difficult. You are really putting way too much into this. So aside from the fact that Maz believes in the force and Han doesn't so Han likely wouldn't keep it around....it doesn't fit the characters.

As for the vision, this also doesn't really work. Because at this point Rey hasn't accepted her hero's journey. Luke had. So Luke wouldn't need a vision to show him these things. He was already all in. Luke wanted to leave Tatooine. Rey didn't want to leave Jakku. She was going back until she was kidnapped.

I should have summed it up like this:

A stranger has an object that nobody should possibly have.
Stranger just happens to be where you are.
Stranger knows the history of incredibly rare object
Stranger knows that this object is calling to you
    Stranger is never mentioned again.

At least when Ben gave it to Luke he had a good reason for having it and gave some info about it and where it came from. Maz is just a mystery box vending out more mysteries.
    --- Double Post Merged, Oct 31, 2019 ---

Well, I said that it was the same but without the vents. Here's some pictures that I think show that his saber is the same one, or at least the same basic design. Te first picture is the saber Ben pull to defend against Luke, followed by Kylo's.

Still looks like Anakin’s saber to me, especially the signature black rubber vertical bars at the pummel:

Why should nobody have this? You are applying false logic then using it as a complaint for a problem that doesn't actually exist.

Well yeah, that's how movies work man. Accept or don't. Otherwise movies would be boring as Blast. Oh Han Solo just *happened* to be at that specific cantina on Tatooine? SURE GEORGE LUCAS YOU HACK.

Well yes, she's very clearly close to the best friend of it's last owner. Why wouldn't she know? Hey Han, I found this Lightsaber in Bespin. Think Luke might know anything about it? Yeah it was his dads then his. But it turns out the last time he had it was when he found out his dad was Darth Vader and cut off Luke's hand sending it careening into a shaft.

Why is Maz, who we establish earlier is sensitive to the force, knowing it's calling to Rey an issue? Again, not seeing the point here other than to complain that something isn't explicitly stated on screen.

She's present during the battle then used to find a codebreaker in the next movie. Unsure what you are expecting here.

Indeed, Maz finding Anakin’s lightsaber on Bespin is no more far fetched the Luke finding it in the EU/Legends and fiving it to his wife to be Mara Jade.

Why should nobody have this? You are applying false logic then using it as a complaint for a problem that doesn't actually exist.
I shouldn't have said that. I do believe that it should be highly unprobeable that anyone has it at all though. Lightsabers aren't indestructible. Luke's fell hundreds if not thousands of feet and should have been destroyed upon impact. Or, if it was intact it should have either fallen to Bespin like Luke would have, or maybe left down there. I suppose maintenance people could have found it. The point is, like Palpatine showing up 30 years later without explanation (if that's the case, which we don't know yet), Luke's lightsaber showing up in the hands of someone we know next to nothing about without any explanation is sloppy. It's unnecessary too. When Luke got it from Ben it was a great scene of exposition. JJ gave us... a mystery. Then another movie with nothing. There's still one more movie so, maybe there will be some explanation.

Well yeah, that's how movies work man. Accept or don't. Otherwise movies would be boring as Blast. Oh Han Solo just *happened* to be at that specific cantina on Tatooine? SURE GEORGE LUCAS YOU HACK.
What are you talking about? Han being in the cantina is perfectly normal. If it were TFA though, Han would have had the plans to the Death Star in his back pocket. That's my point.

Yup, totally possible. Why are we left wondering these things though? I can't help but notice that everyone talking about this has to say "It could be", "It must have been", "It's obviously that it was this...". That's because we're not being told what happened. It's totally possible that I'm more sensitive to loose ends that many, which hinders my own enjoyment of these movies. With the exception of Syfo Dias in AOTC, I can't think of any vague reference that was left unexplained until the ST came along. I'm just not used to my Star Wars being made that way.

Why is Maz, who we establish earlier is sensitive to the force, knowing it's calling to Rey an issue? Again, not seeing the point here other than to complain that something isn't explicitly stated on screen.
My bad again. I didn't realize she was supposed to be so connected to the force. It does make sense that she would be able to sense the saber communicating with Rey.

She's present during the battle then used to find a codebreaker in the next movie. Unsure what you are expecting here.
Yes, she's literally in the movie a little more and in the next one but nothing new is revealed. That's what I meant.

    1. Again this is you ascribing real world physics and attributes to a space fantasy.

    2. And it's perfectly logical for Han, a smuggler, to know Maz Kanata who is a bit of a safe haven on Takodana. And when trying to get Rey and Finn to where they need to be, why wouldn't they go visit her? Seems pretty on point with everything. So again, what's the issue here? Contrivances are a part of storytelling. Maz being where Rey is, is no more illogical than Han. And that wasn't your point. You've moved goal posts. And that wouldn't be the equivalent. It'd be closer to if Han had Anakin's lightsaber, (ya know the object in question) but then he'd also have to have a relationship with Obi-Wan to make the comparison work but that weakens your argument even further. So I get why you changed it.

    3. Because it's not this story being told. The same reason we aren't told HOW the Rebels got the Death Star plans either time. Just that they did and many Bothans died.

    4. If you can sense the force, why couldn't you sense that? I don't get this at all. You accept she is capable of sensing the force but sensing it's calling to Rey, is absurd? That feels like you're asking for a very small needle to be thread here.

    5. But what is revealed about Mothma in ROTJ? Nothing. What is revealed about Akbar? Nothing. Tarkin? Nothing. She is a tertiary character. Any info on her will be put in comics or books. Again, this just isn't the story being told.

The movie you are describing wanting is 5 hours long and 4.5 of that is expository dialogue. Yes, all JJ did in TFA was create mystery boxes. But these aren't the problematic ones. They're just tiny unimportant threads so they can write 6 books.
