The question of what the sequel trilogy can bring to the Star Wars saga that hasn't been done before is common. Likewise, people have grumbled about the environments in the Force Awakens looking too much like Tatooine and Hoth.

What abut the idea of a major battle taking place at sea - both above and below the water?

Star Destroyers and resistance cruisers skim the surface of the ocean blasting at each other like WW2 destroyers in the Pacific while deploying amphibious fighters to dive below the surface and star fighters take to the skies above the water in dogfights. Fallen destroyers and cruisers sink beneath the waves as the amphibious fighters battle one another.

It would be the Star Wars version of the battle of Midway.

I know they have done underwater battles in the Clone Wars, but it would be awesome to see as a major battle in a movie, too, unlike anything seen in a Star Wars movie before with some amazing imagery.

Interesting. Yes if the rebels had a base under the ocean which would be a good place to hide it could prove interesting if the first order located it. There could be battles over and under like you said.

Interesting... maybe too hard to do or to make enjoyable.

The underwater battles in TCW were made enjoyable by making them unrealistic in many ways, and even then the scenes involving them weren't the best of the series.

I would love to see some passing skirmish, perhaps a brief sequence in which we saw some underwater vessels shooting at each other or assaults an underwater structure like @Jimba Fett mentions... but for the movie it seems it'd be tough to make enjoyable in any lengthy capacity that we generally associate the movie battles with. Frankly if one makes it (being submerged) realistic, it becomes incredibly uncomfortable, in my opinion.

TCW underwater battle was the best way to do it in my opinion. Animated is easier than getting actors to spend weeks underwater.

I'd love to see something like this on the big screen. I like the comparison with the battle of Midway.

Plus it would take the taste of Otoh Gunga out of my mouth.

From what I believe, there was a battle of sorts underwater with Obi-Wan and Anakin in the beginning of ROTS but it was scrapped into a deleted scene at the end of the day.

Underwater in TPM didn't seem to work out so well. But to be fair, its a prequel, Disney can do better than that, just add some fights, lose all the giant fish monsters and Jar Jar.

This battle could also happen on Luke's island planet.

I shouldn't say this, but there's a little known invention at the moment called CGI :p
No, they just waded through some chest-deep water in Grevious' ship away from some Super Battle Droids. There was no battle.

The reason it wasn't a literal battle is because they were supposed to really be swimming in fuel .

I like this idea a lot. We see battles in space, we see battles on land (desert, snow, forest) why not let us see a battle in the ocean somewhere.

In the book "Bloodlines" they make mention of a planet that is entirely water that someone built cities in the shallows to hide from the empire.

Be a nice way to introduce a new species or machines or tech. They could keep it short/simple as in a flash back or a full blown battle.
Don't see it happening in the new movies as a current time event as we seem short on new tech. Good way to start a battle and have it end on the ground.

Sure it was fuel? I remember the water being there to cool down the generators, or something.

I would really love to see an underwater battle in the SW movies yet I am also in on the idea of giving us a underwater world even if there is no fight involved. Seeing as SW has so many awesome underwater species like the Chagrians, Aqualish, Quarren, Ishi Tib and Nautolans to just name a few, it would be awesome to see more underwater worlds and creatures. I loved the sea creatures of Naboo and the city of Otoh Gunga yet we didn't really get to see much of the city to really appreciate it. Having various scenes where the actors can let us enjoy the underwater view before letting it escalate into a huge undersea battle would be real cool.
