    It happened in the book and that is canon. If we really want to split hairs, the only time something from written media is not considered canon is if it directly contradicts what happens on screen. In this instance the novelization does not contradict, it only adds to the story ;)

    The only way that can become canon is if in the next movie we see Plutt without an arm or with a robotic one. There are many things in novels that don't contradict movies yet that still doesn't make them canon as this is anyones guess. Palps learning that Yoda trained Luke is a perfect example of that. We never saw said confrontation in the Death Star so we can't say that conversation took place. Something as important as having Plutt find Rey heaven knows how and then having Chewie rip his arm off is something that would have greatly affected Rey. Not to mention that Han would have gotten involved as well as he and Plutt would have had issues over the Falcon and he would have seen the commotion that that scene would have caused apart from Maz Kanata being bothered by it as well.
