What's next for Jon Favreau after The Mandalorian? More of it, apparently, as the showrunner and big-name Star Wars fan is currently writing a second season for the Disney+ series.

While speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote next weekend's The Lion King, Favreau revealed that he's completely finished work on the first season of The Mandalorian and is in the process of working on the second season of the series:
You can watch Favreau's full comments below, with the Star Wars discussion starting at 11 minutes and 45 seconds into the video:

    [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwycCipNMVE[/embed]

This jives with existing rumors about the project, which stated that Lucasfilm basically greenlit a second season before The Mandalorian was even showcased at Star Wars Celebration Chicago earlier this year. More recently, there are rumors that Disney and Lucasfilm are so happy with Rick Famuyiwa, one of the show's directors, that he is in discussions to direct one or more episodes of the Cassian Andor-focused series. Those same rumors indicate that the studio liked the work that the other directors did as well, so don't be surprised if we see the likes of Dave Filoni, Bryce Dallas Howard, Deborah Chow, and Taika Waititi back behind the camera for the Cassian Andor project, The Mandalorian, or the third planned live-action TV series.

In terms of when the show's second season will arrive, it seems likely that it will hit Disney+ after the Cassian Andor project, which is believed to debut in 2021. Both will probably hit Disney+ that year, with a third series and potentially more on the horizon. But with 2020, it seems like The Clone Wars will be the main event for Disney+, at least as far as Star Wars content goes - Falcon and Winter Soldier, the first live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe series to be produced by Marvel Studios instead of Marvel TV, seems to be the biggest draw to Disney+ next year.

    UPDATE!

After speaking with Jon Favreau at The Lion King premiere a few days ago, Collider has just posted an exclusive with a bit more information on the status of The Mandalorian Season 2. Favreau revealed some of the modern techniques they use to establish shots and visual effects, which involves a lot of advance set up and work:
Because of this method to handling development on the series, pre-production of The Mandalorian Season 2 is already underway, even though the show's first season is still months away from debuting on Disney+.

Favreau explains that the set up for how they are going to shoot the show requires them to begin work on Season 2 now, because these techniques involve helping them understand and establish how they will be shooting scenes for the next season's episodes:
In simpler terms, the level of financing going into this show paired with the modern Virtual Reality (VR) technology, allows Favreau/Disney/Lucasfilm to make a series, on this grand of size and scale, manageable on a TV production schedule time frame.

The Mandalorian’s premise is as follows:
The Mandalorian Season 1 will be released on a weekly basis starting on November 12, the launch date for the Disney+ streaming service. No release window for Season 2 has been given.

Favreau is really pushing the industry forward by incorporating in-camera game engine effects for environments and large-scale effects. I'm excited to see the prototype for this technology in this first season but I think season 2 will be a truly special visual endeavor since they have had time and experience to work out the kinks and upgrade the technology and shooting techniques. Love that he already did some of this in Lion King and Jungle Book so that what is next can be even more sophisticated.

I think releasing episodes weekly is for the best. It will increase the hype as everyone will be at the same place in the story each week. This boosts conversation and anticipation regarding the show. They want it to be an event and talked about every week like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead.

Glad they’re already working on season 2. That shows a level of confidence and commitment in what they’re doing. I hate it when networks cancel a series before it even gets a chance to find its legs.

DC Universe does this, too, to ensure that fans stick around and can't just binge and purge. Makes sense for a new service just starting out, but I'd like to see both DC and Disney+ switch to the Netflix model when membership/content levels are high enough.

I just saw the 7 minute leaked footage ( many Bothans died to get this footage...) looks really good. They even captured a real naughty Twi'lek, I hope she's not just a background character :p. However, the main character's voice sounds like a nerd. He doesn't sound ominous... he doesn't have that cool Boba Fett/Mando voice which seems odd. Other than that, I really look forward to this.

Out of respect to the creators I won't watch it till there is a trailer. That being said, if you had told me that we're nearing four months out till release and we still don't have a official trailer yet? Not even a teaser?

I mentioned this in the public forums, but I think Disney should wait until they get a fan reaction to Season 1. Let’s say, for example, a segment of fandom treats Gina Carano the same way they did Kelly Marie Tran. Will there be enough time to alter the storyline to “redo” her character? (Again, I haven’t heard anything, I’m just using her as an example.)
On the other hand, if Disney wants to get Season 2 out by next fall, they will need to crank out the scripts and filming as fast as possible.

Bowing to toxic, bigot pressure? No thank you! Sally forth, Disney! Do not for a second consider the opinion of trolls! :)

(BTW, Rose is awesome and Kelly Marie Tran a sweet, warm, darling person, and a lot more important than the sphincter ache of a bunch of web trolls!)

TV experts: is this unusual to start shooting S2 before S1 even releases?
--- Double Post Merged, Aug 22, 2019 at 10:23 AM, Original Post Date: Aug 22, 2019 at 10:19 AM ---
You're not going to please everyone. I'd rather they have a plan and stick to it then be reactionary. Why are you signaling out one female character anyway? The same could happen to anyone on the cast.
