The cast for Episode IX has been officially announced by Lucasfilm in an article released by StarWars.com! Here are the specifics followed by our take and speculation on the details of the announcement!

Just released on the official Star Wars website:

    RETURNING CAST MEMBERS:

Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, and we are putting this guy in the 'returning' category, welcome back to Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian!

    CARRIE FISHER RETURNS:

Carrie Fisher will be back as Princess/General Leia Organa, using previously unused footage from The Force Awakens. Writer/director J. J. Abrams explains what lead to this ultimate decision:

    NEW CAST MEMBERS:

The two new cast members listed will give us plenty to speculate about in the months and year ahead. We don't know too much about British actress Naomi Ackie, she is best known for a role in 2016's Lady Macbeth. You can take a look at her IMDB profile here.

Richard E. Grant, 61, is a Swazi-English actor, and Star Wars fans may recognize him as Dr. Zander Rice in Logan and Izembaro in Game of Thrones. Not to speculate too early, but if you've seen some stills of him you almost want to do a double take, as he could easily come across as a Tarkin type. First Order perhaps? Way too soon to tell, but this is where the fun begins!

    UPDATE!

While Keri Russell, who was rumored to be 'in early talks' for a role as a new character in the film, was missing from the cast list released through the official website, Variety has reported that she has just closed her deal with Lucasfilm, likely right after the press release was finalized. (Lucasfilm has since updated their report with her name on the cast list.) Keri has a history with working with J. J. Abrams in the television series Felicity, along with a supporting role in Mission: Impossible III.

    LEGACY CHARACTERS RETURN:

In addition to the heartwarming news that Carrie Fisher is getting one more adventure in that galaxy far, far away (at the blessing of her family), we can also cease speculation on whether Mark Hamill will return as Luke Skywalker! This is a smart move by Lucasfilm, as it was almost a certainty he would return, and trying to keep a lid on it may have been an arduous task. Now Hamill can freely promote the film and be the appearance/media tour darling we have cherished since Star Wars returned with The Force Awakens, including at Star Wars Celebration 2019!

It was all but officially confirmed that Billy Dee Williams was coming back as Lando, as we heard a lot of rumblings about him cancelling convention appearances due to filming. But it is of course nice to get the confirmation. Welcome back Lando!

Star Wars: Episode IX begins filming Wednesday August 1st. It will opens in theaters in the United States on December 18, 2019.

    Yesss!

Grant has got to be playing a First Order Officer, right, maybe even a former Imperial? He definitely looks like he could rock that role.

Will Naomi Ackie be cast as Lando’s daughter?!

Carrie Fisher is back as Leia? This will be emotional.

He definitely looks like a bad guy. Maybe he's a rival for Hux.

Usually I don't like ideas like that, but this one could actually be great. The heroes are looking for Lando but they find his daughter instead. She will help to get them to Lando.

I've been pushing this theory ever since it was announced that a young black actress was being looked for. With BDW confirmed, it's incredibly likely now.

Also: RIP to any theories that Mark Hamill's involvement would be a secret, or that it wouldn't happen because he wanted "revenge" against Disney.

After TLJ I just don't have faith in the ST but knowing they found a role for Carrie using cut footage is a pretty good sign. I'm also glad to see that they aren't trying to keep Lando or Luke secret. And look another Game of Thrones actor.

Sequel Trilogy and Game of Thrones (and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again) share the same casting director (Nina Gold,) so there's some overlap over these three projects.

PS. This is the tweet @cawatrooper is talking about:

That makes a ton of sense. And it's such a Leia thing to do.

To send her out on an important diplomatic mission...

Well, you know how the famous Lucas "poetry" quote goes.

According to Variety, Keri Russell just closed the deal with Lucasfilm for Ep. IX. So, we will get Keri in the movie. I suspect the press-release about the cast was ready for a little while, but they couldn't include Keri on the list, because the deal wasn't done.

The IX hype train officially starts!

Can't say anything about the newcomers. I haven't seen Ackie in anything, but I like the idea of her being Lando's daughter. Would be cool if she was hanging out with him (healthy family relations for once in Star War). I've seen a couple of films with Grant, but honestly I don't remember him. That said, I'm sure they are well cast, the casting department has been knocking it out of the park in all recent films. I'm glad Mark is mentioned, because hiding his involvement would be just silly.

Carrie is the big one here. I don't know... I don't understand how there could be unused TFA footage that would fit IX. It must be a small role then. A flashback? Force vision? Well... I guess J.J. knows what he's doing, although I kinda think explaining her death in the crawl would be fine. TLJ was already a beautiful sendoff for the character IMO.

Been in a bit of a lull with Star Wars since the backlash to TLJ, like a bit of a bad breakup (heck, I still haven’t seen Solo, though I’ve also been very busy!) — the reactions to TLJ, especially those aimed at Kelly Marie Tran and Rian, mightily knocked the foundations of what I thought the film and Star Wars fan communities at large had come to (i.e. their senses, and being polite and respectful).

Well, I guess the breakup is over.
    I’m hyped as hell.

Hyped that there is some leftover footage of Carrie and that we aren’t seeing Leia recast or recreated through CGI (I was rather taken aback by just how many were fans of these options), and happy that Billie gave her blessing.

Hyped that John Williams (may the Force and good health be with him always, but especially in the next 18 months) will be composing what is likely to be his final score for a Star Wars film. I still think ROTS is one of his best all-around Star Wars scores, which completed the Saga 13 years ago, so I’m hoping that we get some similar awesomeness with IX to end the Saga next year. Kind of expecting the most epic and goosebump-inducing version of the Force theme, though, so no pressure John... :p

Hyped for all of the returning cast (thank the Force they didn’t wait to confirm Luke!), and all of the new cast too.

I’ll probably be on and off in the coming months as I’m sure we find out more and more, and likely won’t deep dive back in until we see a teaser, but I’m really glad to be returning to talk to the great folk here.

Speaking of the teaser, I’ve said it before, but now that IX is suddenly becoming more tangible by the second, I’m going to put it out there again that IX will follow a similar marketing campaign to TFA, meaning that we’ll probably see a short teaser trailer (probably a minute to a minute and a half long) put out around Thanksgiving for Disney to attach to Mary Poppins Returns come this Christmas (and a trailer at Celebration next year, and a final one next October).

Oh, and @cawatrooper, absolutely agree. Grant is an FO officer/former Imperial if I’ve ever seen one!

Hey, finally, it's here. Great to have something to look forward to. Don't know much about Naomi. I can't say that Lady Macbeth was decent. I saw it at The British Film institute a couple years back. That's not Naomi fault. Am sure she will be great.

Carrie coming back will be great. I hope JJ knows what he's doing. This could go either way, amazing or bad. But am thinking positively.

I never would have guessed unused footage. But it's great they found a way.

Lando's cameo must be pretty important. Glad Mark is back.
