This makes me wonder: JJ said they won't use recasts or CGI, but there is no mentioning of stand ins. So they could use a back shot of Leia who's giving her son a hug.

I want them to use footage of all 8 previous movies and lead it to episode IX. This would be a trailer, which they could Release easily this year.

Let the hype train begin. Hopefully JJ will be a little more forthcoming with information this time around. It does not need to be big information but little bits here and there to tease our appetites. I think using old footage from Carrie is ok. If edited correctly it can be done well. She won’t have a large part on screen but it will allow her to stay part of the story. It seems like this is the end of the Skywalker saga, it is a good way to keep her alive through the end of it.

I think bringing in Luke and Leia (who happen to be 2 of the most famous characters in movie history) and being so open about it is more to attract the casual fans than the hardcore ones. The casual fans need to be given a reason to go see this movie beyond Rey, Finn and Poe (who haven't exactly taken the galaxy by storm).

The Last Jedi and The Force Awakens are some of the highest grossing films in cinema history. Had people not liked these films, then they wouldn't have made so much money at the box office. I don't think that announcements like these are aimed at casual viewers at all and if they are, then they're sole purpose for general audience is that "more Star Wars is coming!". Do you honestly believe that a rrandom Joe cares who the production designer will be or how will Leia be incorporated?

That's not entirely true. A friend of mine is the definition of "casual SW Fan" and he said he wouldn't watch IX in the cinema if Luke isn't a part of it. Crazy right?

I agree with your overall point - this press release isn't to get general audiences excited. It's more about Lucasfilm knowing they can't keep any of it from leaking out once production begins, so they might as well go ahead and make the announcement themselves.

But, their plans for Leia are of interest to a wide range of people - in the same way I was curious how Paul Walker's death would be handled in Furious 7, even though the original film was the only one in the series I has ever seen. The headline on CNN is "'Star Wars: Episode IX' cast will include Carrie Fisher" while USA Today reads "Carrie Fisher's Leia will star in upcoming 'Star Wars: Episode IX' using 'unseen footage'". Mark Hamill or Billy Dee Williams may not get much mainstream attention at this stage, but even the casual fans will be curious to know what they plan to do about Leia.

I support the decision of having Carrie/Leia in IX.
Carrie and Leia as a character deserve a proper send off.
And I hope it will be.

The casual fan does not care who the production designer is, but they most certainly do care about seeing Luke and Leia, which is why this whole announcement was made early and made loudly.

there is no truly satisfying way of saving Ben without Leia. this is the best news. : D
i have theories about the footage they could potentially use, but we'll see how it unfolds.

Both The Last Jedi and Solo got the same kind of announcement and I also believe Rogue One and The Force Awakens did as well. The only bit that may be considered "fan-servicey" is the bit about posthumous appearance by Carrie Fisher, but considering that they've released an official statement regarding her role in IX before it seems appropriate that they tell us what will e the solution to this issue.

Then he's missing on a lot of great stuff.

    Yes, absolutely.

Hopefully they got a deleted scene of Carrie hugging somebody. They could re-use this scene then for hugging Kylo.

Maybe they can re-use Leia hugging Rey. The get rid off Rey, give some new clothes and add BEN.

that too! there are several options, i think. and they can certainly cgi her clothes to change them. : D

interesting that they are only looking at TFA footage at the moment, it seems. you would think Johnson has footage as well, no?

I think they used every Carrie scene in the actual movie. Or maybe Rian doesn't want them to use his deleted content? Does he have the rights for that?

most likely yeah, there was just nothing that could fit into the necessary narrative.
if he had stuff worth mining, i'm sure he'd fork it over.

i still think Leia will be out of the major fight, retired from her leadership role.
and we'll just see her at the end when Ben comes home.

I think she will be at the beginning to get the heroes on a mission (finding Lando or something like that) and then we will see her again with Ben at the ending of the movie. People will cry.

yes! i suppose if they have a voice dub, then she could periodically be sending holonet messages to the battle as well.

Carrie’s death was so heartbreaking and it was even more depressing when it seemed like we would not see her at all in IX. Between that, the fictional but still emotional loss of Luke in TLJ, a fan base divided, and a poor showing for Solo, it has felt like a dark time for the franchise. This news is like a breath of fresh air. No matter how much or how little of an appearance Carrie makes in this film I am very grateful for it and send many, many thanks to Billie Lourd.

I am sure it involves a lot of complex emotions but, at the end of the day, Billie Lourd will be the one getting paid for Carrie's appearance. It's not realistic to think that didn't factor into her decisioning.
