Good news from Lucasfilm Games keep coming as Ubisoft is now set to create an open-world Star Wars video game.

Today, via WIRED, we learned that Lucasfilm Games is entering a partnership with Ubisoft to create an open-world Star Wars game. Massive Entertainment (Tom Clancy's The Division) will be handling the project.

The news arrives only a day after we learned that Bethesda's MachineGames would be tackling a new Indiana Jones title, and two days after Lucasfilm Games, a comeback of sorts for LucasArts, was unveiled and promised a bright future for Lucasfilm's IPs in the gaming world.

Massive's Julian Gerighty, director of The Division 2, will be the game's creative director. The title will use Massive's Snowdrop engine too. We do not have more details at the moment, as the game is only in the early stages and hiring is still underway. As post-launch support for The Division 2 continues, Massive is also working on an Avatar project that was announced back in 2017.

Yves Guillemot, co-founder and CEO of Ubisoft, said the following about the deal with Lucasfilm Games:

Just like with EA's recent titles, every game coming from other publishers thanks to deals like this one will be part of Star Wars' current canon and continuity. That being said, developers are getting plenty of freedom according to Douglas Reilly, VP of Lucasfilm Games:

    Update!

In other news, EA has also confirmed they will keep collaborating with Lucasfilm beyond the expected Fallen Order sequel:

    https://twitter.com/EA/status/1349382877054722048

It appears the party is only starting, so be sure to stay tuned for more Star Wars and Lucasfilm gaming news.

    Very exciting.

Just saying, a High Republic game would allow for more creative freedom for the types of RPG elements that Ubisoft has been favoring lately...

Still, I wonder if there will be any planet hopping? I mean, imagine creating your character, your ship and going off on a classic SW adventure? I mean, that's the dream open world game. I'm still excited we're getting open world anything, though.

I think there will be some. It's so baked into the DNA of Star Wars that even the Kenobi show is likely to not take place exclusively on Tatooine.

I wonder if it will be something along the lines of Valhalla's open world (several maps of different locations that you can Fast Travel between), Fallen Order (planets that can be traversed between with a ship that you don't control) or something that affords a bit more control in the ship for traversal (maybe not quite as free as No Man's Sky, but something similar perhaps).

Now here's my big tinfoil conspiracy theory:

If it is a more open NMS-style game, could it be built on the bones of Beyond Good and Evil 2?

BGE2 has been in development hell for a long time. I was actually at the Ubisoft Press Conference in E3 2017 when it was revealed, and there has been almost no news since then. Allegedly, it was going to be a huge game where you could fly between planets pretty seamlessly.

Ancel, the creative head behind the BGE series, left Ubisoft in 2020.

Could Ubisoft have salvaged the project under a more popular IP like Star Wars?

Gonna be a debbie-downer here, but I'm not sure how excited I can be for this yet. Lucasfilm already has an MMORPG with SWTOR, and expansive single-player campaign story with Jedi: Fallen Order, and an online shooter with Battlefront. But there is one area that they haven't really gone yet, and I'm afraid they're headed there - Looter Shooter. Looter Shooters have all of the requirements mentioned, and Star Wars is one of the few properties that could probably compete with Destiny (Marvel was one of the others, and we all saw how that mess turned out.)

This isn't bad news if you're a fan of those types of games. Heck, a Star Wars Looter Shooter could be downright pleasant! But for someone like me, who hates having to play online with other people in order to get a story experience, this may not be the experience for me...assuming that's what they're doing in the first place.

Over/under 2025 for release date? I'm assuming over.

I'm not really a gamer, but I always play the Star Wars games. An open-world game in star wars world would be interesting, though I'm not sure how I would feel about been stuck on 1 planet.

You're not being a downer at all, I'd say thats a wise way of looking at it.

For example I made the bloody stupid mistake of pre-ordering Battlefront II mainly for the story....I learned my lesson.

I hold hope of this being a decent game but I'm not gonna go into it with unrealistic expectations,
like I did recently with Cyberpunk.

Missing features, horrendous performance issues, false advertising.

I enjoyed it, but its not the game they promised.

Don't just take my word for it, the game had a very rough launch.

Rough is a bit of a understatement, the fact it was removed by PlayStation on it's store... is all you need to know. Hopefully patch 1 and 2 fixes it. That said, it is a good game. It's a shame.

I know, I was being kind.

And yeah its a shame for all the devs who tried there best to create a great game, but as is too often the case the selfish people in suits had other ideas :(

Ubisoft usually works on games for about 3 years. But they mostly announce their games one year prior release. So, definitely under 2025.

I'd be shocked. They sound very early in dev.

I’ve wanted a modern open-world Star Wars game for a very long time (I will still dream of a ‘Rockstar-Wars’ GTA-style SW game) but I’m still not going to get too excited about it, whilst being cautiously optimistic. I was most excited for the ‘Uncharted’-style game from Visceral that got cancelled (Fallen Order scratched some but not all of that itch for me), and I’m still more disappointed about that cancellation than I would have been if the game had been released and was terrible(!).

I just hope they make this a decent one-player game, I am not into online multiplayer. It’s why I only bought the Battlefronts cheap (the first for the VR mission at £4, the second for the 1-player campaign, which I enjoyed for under £12, wouldn’t have been happy if I’d paid £50-60!). I still feel like the Battlefront engine is wasted on the genre of game it’s used for (never-ending online multi-player battles significant of very little, but fair play to anyone who loves that stuff.

I am very excited for the Lego Skywalker Saga though and actually pre-ordered that, something I am increasingly reluctant to do for games, for a variety of reasons.
