Timothy Zahn, the man who brought Grand Admiral Thrawn into the consciousness of many Star Wars Legends fans, was also a key force in re-canonizing the character in conjunction with Star Wars Rebels. In addition to last year's Thrawn book, its comic adaptation, and this year's Thrawn: Alliances, Zahn has revealed he's working on outlines for two more novels about the Imperial mastermind, but there's something that will hold him up a bit.

Speaking at Comic Con Revolution Ontario, Zahn explained that he still plans on writing two more books in what I'd like to refer to as the Thrawn tetralogy. There's one problem though – those next two stories are apparently set between the character's disappearance at the end of Rebels and the largely-undefined period of history between Return of the Jedi and The Last Jedi. Because of that, the Lucasfilm Story Group can't let him proceed until Episode IX is completed:

This makes a lot of sense. Right now, most stories set between Return of the Jedi and The Last Jedi are set in close proximity to either movie (a few years, give or take) with very specific narrative focuses in order to make sure that the overarching multimedia narrative of Star Wars isn't backed into a corner. I'd predict that the first of the two remaining books would clear up what happens after Ezra and the space whales sent the crew of the Chimera into hyperspace and that the second would show Thrawn's course of action leading into the Sequel Trilogy - or something to that effect. The Unknown Regions have been set up as a big mystery for writers to take advantage of, and given how Thrawn is from there, it would only make sense that he'll be important to the story going forward.

There may be other, story-related factors involving characters introduced in the sequel trilogy era that could pop up in Zahn's new narratives, and he might have to wait a little to tell his story because of this. Either way, more Thrawn is a win for all fans, even if we might have to wait a little to see the character return.

    UPDATE!

Mr. Zahn has just issued a statement on his Facebook page clarifying that, while he has two pitches for more books about the Grand Admiral in place, they haven't been officially approved. He also notes that he has no knowledge about what happens in Episode IX.

YES! I loved the new novel (well, now it's not quite new, but you know what I mean). I'm kind of not enjoying the fact that it seems as if we are in a lull when it comes to books being published. 2016/17 had a ton of good stuff, including the prelude to Rogue One, Rogue One, Asohka, and Thrawn. Plus the final two books in the Aftermath trilogy. They need to get on it and start pumping out some new books.

I'm very curious as to why they won't let him proceed... I'm not saying he is in 9, but it's very curious.

I'm trying not to read too much into that. I figure it is partly due to the fact that Episode IX affects things in and around where Zahn wants to go so they are going to just wait. Perhaps let him write one book and see if it gives anything away?

I'd say it's just because of safety measures. J.J. has a right to change a lot by the time IX is locked and even a little detail could ruin what Zahn would like to do. So it's better to wait. I'm sure a crazy amount of stories is under a similar "embargo".

They've story locked must of what happens between Return of the Jedi and the ST. We know the First Order came out of the unknown regions so with Thrawn and company most likely in that area they have to be very careful about that. It also allows Zahn to use characters in the ST once he knows who is available.

    This is very interesting.

To me it's obvious that the reason is because they are still inventing what happened in between VI and VII. We got the Aftermath series, which only brings us to the Battle of Jakku a year afetr ROTJ, but that's as far as the new canon goes in that time period. Why?

    1) Episode IX wants to have the freedom to do what it wants with the backstory. That's all been settled now that the script is written, but I'm sure the Story Group is still sifting through the dust that's settling. And,
    2) Jon Favreau's new TV series is set 2 years after the Aftermath trilogy. And he is only 6 episodes deep in the scripts for the show.

So it's still being invented right now, and they are giving preference to the film and television shows, which it seems might be the driving force in the new canon rather than novels as the previous continuity. Novels don't make much money, but movies and TV shows do. So I think going forward the novels will just be filling in a few holes like with Catalyst and Aftermath, rather than carrying the new timeline.

I want Zahn to help write a movie script or at least an episode of the new TV show. There needs to be a live-action Thrawn...

I think a show about the entire imperial military would be awesome and a great way for them to show the rise of characters like General Veers and continue to have more stories about Thrawn.

I'd watch that. I'd also love a film or series about the Empire after the Battle of Jakku. Maybe one showing how they came into contact with Snoke and how they built up the first Order from the ashes of the Empire.

    yes plz. : D

or actually, i don't really care about Snoke that much.
i just want to see the early days of the FO maybe something leading in to their "acquisition" of Kylo Ren.
except i hate Brendol. so either a whole new cast or else something in that little sliver of time between Brendol and Ren? XD

I'm with you except that I am intrigued by Snoke. I don't know that I "care" about him as much as I simply find him fascinating. I would like to know if he is Darth Plageuis or some other dark sider. Was a he a one-time Sith apprentice or something else? I don't know that I need an entire book dedicated to him, or even a series dedicated to him. But I would certainly like to learn a little about this guy.

my compromise is if they do a book/series/comic/whatever about Ben Solo's fall.
i don't really want this, but if it happens, we ought to learn more about Snoke perhaps.
