Since Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi was conceived as a character study, the three leads were split away from one another once again - and Finn didn't even get to meet Rey again until the last ten minutes of the movie. However, from the sound of things, Star Wars Episode IX is going to be more focused on the characters introduced in the Sequel Trilogy working together, as John Boyega has confirmed that Daisy Ridley told him that they'll share multiple scenes (which in turn implies that she's read the script).

Boyega spoke at AwesomeCon last weekend, which our own Bill Sheehy attended. When asked about Episode IX, Boyega mentioned that he doesn't know too much about the project, although he learned of one major detail recently: he'll be playing off of Daisy Ridley a lot more in this one.

I think it's likely that Episode IX will put a good amount of emphasis on having the leads of this trilogy play off of one another, as thus far, there has yet to be a major scene with Finn, Rey, and Poe (and possibly Rose) doing stuff together, which seems odd by the precedent set by the previous two trilogies. A lot of that amounts to Poe getting a larger part midway through production on The Force Awakens and - again - Rian Johnson taking the creative decision to split the team up for the vast majority of The Last Jedi. Considering that the movie is not going to be carried by Legacy characters this time around (not counting Luke's Force Ghost, which will probably factor into the plot, but the extent of which remains to be seen), this seems like the most logical course of action going forward.

    UPDATE!

Um... Duh? ;) I think it's pretty obvious they will share a significant amount of screen time. However, the characters seem to be on quite different journeys, so I don't expect them to be together all the time. I think it's inevitable for Rey to go on her own and finish the Jedi/Force/Kylo Ren business.

A two-and-a-half character study? For whom?

Don't forget that Finn has a conflict with Kylo Ren as well. It was J.J. who set it up.

Sure, there definitely was a conflict, starting from the Jakku village. However, I think that's already resolved with their unlikely duel in the forest. Finn bravely stood against Kylo showing he's not a coward and Kylo defeated him (perhaps assumed he's dead). So I don't think the conflict needs a conclusion, but I can see J.J. adding something to it and that would be totally fine.

For the three leads, the villain, and Luke. Heck, most of Luke's arc in TLJ is based around character study.

Give us a massive time-jump and start IX with Finn and Rey as Jedi Knights. Build a new apprentice for Kylo Ren to serve as the "main antagonist" for Finn. So that he and Rey can both confront the bad guy but one doesn't have to be unconscious like both Rey and Finn were for their respective fight with Kylo in TFA. Or build Kylo up more as a better swordsman and have a Maul style two one one.

MAY HAVE... CLICKBAIT... After reading some of the comments it seems that episode 9 will be the real sequel to TFA over-looking what RJ did in 8 somewhat...

I don't think this really implies DR has read the script, just that she has spoken to JJ about it. Didn't JJ only pitch his story idea to Disney in December? Seems like a short amount of time to get a polished script out to actors. Regardless, glad Finn will be sharing scenes with Rey again, if only so that he's a part of the main story this time.

It was bound to happen considering how many great scenes they had in TFA,

I think the average time to come up with a script for this kind of a movie is about four to six months. J. J. Abrams and Chris Terrio were hired back in September, and Abrams revealed that he had a script finished five months later in February on a talk show.

The start date on filming was put back by about a month or so (it was June, now it's July), so presumably that was for a couple of rewrites and tweaks to the script before they start filming.

I see, thanks for the correction. There could be weight to this then. It's very exciting to know the end already exists out there somewhere!
