I remember Kathy Kennedy commenting on this shortly after the trailer debuted at Celebration. She said that bringing Palpatine back was always part of the plan for the ST, they just had to figure out when and how to do it.

it's also obvious from the EU that his contingency plan was in the design all along.
Palpatine's presence is woven throughout the new canon including all of the post-RotJ novels.
from Aftermath to Alphabet Squadron, he's been haunting the New Republic from the shadows.

Yoooo... in the Vader smash clip it looks like Rey is holding a dagger. You can see it at the very end.

I figured. I've avoided most super spoilery stuff. But I have heard of the Sith dagger.

Seriously, what would be something original? I am pretty sure that everything has been made... Now most directors and writers try to connect various elements from different influential movies and present them with the best possible ways...

There's a difference between say making something "new" like Avatar (or the Terminator) and simply remaking The Lion King, Dumbo, and Aladdin all in one year. That shows a lack of vision and creativity. And just to disclose, I think Avatar is way way way too similar to Dances With Wolves, one of my favorite films of all time.

And yes, I realize many things are, to some extent, copying something similar from something else. Heck Star Wars took at least 10 things from Frank Herbert's original Dune series and Star Wars. That's FAR different than what Disney is doing right now, which is what I was referring to.

We've seen Threepio holding both... does Chewie run around after he gives them to the droid or do they get taken if he gets captured?

Hollywood has moved to a model of sequels and remakes because they have a built in audience - thus assured ticket sales and lower cost of promotion. Generally, TV is where the better storytelling is these days - shows like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, etc. that take multiple seasons to tell a story.

To quote J.R.R. Tolkien, “every storyteller is telling the same story..” i agree and think all the novel ways to tell that same great story are pretty mich done.

The Iceberg looks like it's in space. The "reflection" doesn't match the top. Could it be a mining outpost?

One of the things I have seen all day in reactions is how could the horse things be on Star Destroyers in space. Isnt it obvious? They arent. We see in the trailer a Star Destroyer breaking through the earth. We saw in some of the first pictures during production Finn and others on horseback in grassy plains. Very similar to the landscape that the 1st teaser showed as the group approached the downed Death Star. Seems pretty obvious to me they will be on the horse creatures and get on the Star Destroyers before they lift off. Trying to board before the Star Destroyers leave the atmosphere.

You guys are party poopers. While I agree to an extent the imagination is limitless. Take Breaking Bad for example. It is actually very Shakespearean, and Vince Gilligan says as much, but the way it is done is new and fresh and 99% of the audience would not even know. I think action movies in the 21st century have just locked themselves into a formula that is very stale and doesn't put a new twist on old stories.

Sounds like "The End of History" to me. Remember how wrong that turned out to be?

I can't find those words attributed to Tolkien, but, assuming he wrote them, that didn't dissuade him from mashing together "The Odyssey", The Ring Cycle, "Beowulf"and all those Norse sagas and coming up with something new. Likewise, "A New Hope" represented a new way of telling a heroic epic--even though its elements were familiar. Both "A New Hope" and "The Lord of the Rings" disprove the notion that there are no more novel ways to tell stories. I suppose each writer could have said, "There's nothing new." Good thing they didn't.

There are lots of people doing amazing creative things out there. It's just that most of them aren't making quarter billion dollar Hollywood movies.

The guy from Star Wars Theory said that at the beginning of the trailer that could possibly be a flashback of Leia training on Endor. While I doubt this is the case, from the side view of the leap it doesn't quite look like her. However, I would find it odd that Leia would be wearing basically the same clothes as Rey and have her hair back in a bun instead of some unusual Leia type hairstyle. What say you?

What I meant by Tolkien’s words is the story is the same, whither its Arthurian, Norse, Greek, Roman, or Science Fiction. Certainly it can be told in s new way as you say, by melting several tales together or changing aspects, but the point is the story at it heart is the same.

When I said original ways to tell the same story are over, I meant since the 1990’s to present.
