    Hello there.

Correct me If I'm wrong, but it seems that all the holograms from the previous films were live transmissions, recent recordings or squematic diagrams.

What if this time we see some holograms recorded a long time ago? Maybe, one recorded 10 years ago that bring some light on Luke's disappearance, or an older one with vital information from the villain(s) of Ep. 7, etc.

Well, according to my knowledge, flashbacks hasn't been part of Star Wars's narrative, that's why I think holograms could be use as "flashbacks" of the new episode. What do you think?

i could see there being some old recording knocking around. imagine if R2 had perished during the descent to Tatooine and the Rebels never got those schematics for the Death Star; that recording would still be knocking around in his rusting innards, right? maybe some clue is found in the form of some old recording that never made it to where it needed to be...

That's right. Some holograms could have a data that match with the events of Ep. 5, 4 or before. Time will tell if Abrams and Kasdan explored these and other possiblities for story development in Ep. 7.

I think holograms showing past events would be better than actual flashbacks. They were kind of used this way to show Anakin slaughtering the younglings; and there was a cut scene in AotC that showed holograms in Padme's quarters, hung like pictures on the wall (I think).

But the flashback intrigues me, particularly as the Massassi Temple seems to have been recreated at the GC set. Could that be a flashback (to Ep IV era), or are the X-wings featured there too dissimilar to the OT craft to suggest this?

Whether it will be flashbacks, hollograms, hints dropped in dialog spread throughout the movie, or simply somone telling the story like Obi Wan in IV, they will inevitably have to fill in the blanks (30 years).

I just hope they don't give us answers to absolutely everything. I'm a fan of tying up loose ends in stories but it's nice to leave some mysteries in there we can talk about before the next release.

Not a flashback, but the main point of exposition in terms of establishing what's been going on in the GFFA will be the opening crawl. And at present, I have no clue what that will focus on at all.

"It has been three decades since the demise of Emperor Palpatine and an uneasy peace has settled over the galaxy. The former Galactic Empire has retreated to the loyal worlds of the Core Systems while those liberated from its tyranny continue to assert their independence...."

Ok. Something like that will NEED to be said, for sure -- but then what? How do we move from the macro to the micro in order to kick start a story? Another trade dispute?!

The Opening Crawl does its best to fill in the gaps, the problem with exposition is that the audience knows when it is happening (unless done perfectly) and screws up the suspension of disbelief. Obi-Wan's speech in Episode IV is one of the few examples of perfect exposition because the audience was given a proper vessel (Luke) with which to see the world. We can look at something recent such as, I don't know, the webseries RWBY. One of the main complaints with RWBY is its very clumsy attempts at exposition, a lot of random "hey allow me to explain everything right now" they also broke the cardinal rule and had exposition happen in a classroom, that rarely if ever works.

Exposition will have to happen because of the 30 year gap, it will be one of the chief creative difficulties Abrams and Kasdan will have to overcome. They have the audience vessel in Ridley, and we assume that the giver of exposition will be MvS

I would prefer holograms to flashbacks, certainly, but I am one of those who believes that between the scrawl and proper mentor/subject dialogue, there wont be any need for either... one of the advantages of having a galaxy-weary veteran (like, say, MvS) and a naive pupal (like, say, Ridley) is that you can do a lot of explaining
