Having bluffed us all of the scent for the better part of a year, rogue one finally recently acknowledged Vader will be in rogue one, your thoughts on wether this is a clever marketing strategy or weather you believe Vader will play a small but integral role.

    My prediction of his role:
    1) Appears closer to the end of the movie.
    2) Kills Krennic after he fails the empire letting the rebels steal the Death Star plans.
    3) Kills some stormtroopers.
    4) Kills some rebels.
    5) Gets blocked by the rebels who sacrifise themselves so one of them could bring the plans to the Alliance.
    6) ???
    7) Profit.

The shot of Krennic looking rather sheepish I'm guessing takes place in the same room as where Vader is standing.

Two things are likely to be next: They test fired the Death Star on Jedha, and it was not entirely successful (we see the crumbling planet), and that renders Jedha uninhabitable. This ups the pressure on Krennic to improve the Death Star, and there's only a small window then for the Rebel strike team to get to Scarif and steal the plans. Or, that's at the end of the film, and the Rebels have already escaped with the plans and sent to them to a ship from Alderaan and Vader is calling Krennic into his office to discipline his throat real hard.

    Vader = dollars.

Everything else about his role is secondary. No matter what they tell you.

I don't think it is just a money grab. I think he will be used as a way to bridge Rogue One to ANH. I think he will kill Krennic when he learns the plans have been stolen and he will be at the weapons test. I don't think we will see him in combat. I thought they made it pretty clear the Force would not play a role in this movie. Obviously, it plays a role but I don't think we will see it used except to kill Krennic. I recall them talking about this being a movie where there will be no Jedi savior. If no Jedi savior I don't think we can have Vader running around in combat.

Well he is a executioner of the Emperor, when exactly are you allowed to use him, if not when his long delayed project is in danger.

It will almost certainly be a small but significant role, I predict he will kill Donnie Yen's character in a lightsaber duel near the end of the movie.

In my opinion it is justified his presence since from what we saw in ANH, he is the first main sentient character that appears onscreen from the Empire. Would it make sense that he had no part in the previous Rebel attack where the plans were stolen? I guess not. Of course it will drive more casual fans to the screening rooms to watch the movies and it will be awesome to be Vader in his full "Dark Lord of the Sith" mode before Uncle Owen was looking to buy a droid who translated Bocce. So far the only images we have had from that period had been from Rebels and Lords of the Sith.

I differ. From what I recall, in the Darth Vader comic series, we see him in combat and no Jedi are around - of course, he fights a certain farm-boy we know briefly but he was no Jedi yet (and it was in the Star Wars comic series).

I'm not going to see R1 for Vader. I want to see a good war movie in the SW Universe.

We did see him and he wiped out everyone and every thing. He was a God and no one could touch him. If they do that in the movie how realistic is it the rebels get away with the plans? I said a long time ago that I don't want to see him be a god on screen. I hope we don't see him in combat.

I have this gut feeling those crying Vader being in Rogue 1 is a cash grab would be the first ones crying foul and discontinuity sins if he was not in it.

well...it kind of is lol...as much as I would LOVE Vader, this story could be told without him ever being in it...he's DEFINITELY a marketing gimmick because the average person wouldn't understand fully that this is a spin-off so Vader would be the glue that holds the billions of dollars together

I think Vader being in it is actually a necessity to the story. I feel this way primarily based on the lines Vader spoke in ANH, like "There will be no on to stop us this time." There are a couple other lines but they all point out the fact he was actively involved with preventing them from getting the plans and in the recovery of the plans. The fact that his presence will also being a big draw amongst fans is an added plus.

And I do think most fans and even the general public will get where the movie falls on the time line. Anyone that doesn't won't be helped by Vader being present one way or the other.

I just want to see another really good Star Wars movie.
(And the best that this saga has to offer, all feature him)

Darth Vader's greatest Legacy is that he has never been in a crappy film.
(So, if Rogue One blows, I'll eat his ruined mask from TFA and post it on Youtube)

5 minutes of Vader screen-time = more ticket sales, guaranteed.
    (It is known)

Even if he never turns on his light-saber.

(Show us your Sorcerer's ways, Lord Vader....)

    No pressure, Disney....
    (None at all)

I think it's a little bit of both. Disney obviously knew that fans would want to see the movie that much more if they put Vader in the trailer, but I also think that JJ wanted to show fans that he hadn't discarded the original trilogy. Vader, hopefully, will have a pivotal role in Rogue One, but you can never be sure. I saw a meme that speculated if Vader would have as little screen time as Luke did in TFA. I hope to the heavens above this is not the case - after Vader being dead for the past 30 years, I'm ready to see him alive and well (and with more than 30 seconds of screentime). So, in conclusion, although this very well could be a marketing tactic, it's a very good one. It's definitely working on me.

This is the FIRST victory for the Rebel Alliance, which equals first significant BLOW to the Empire. Who's going to deal with it? Who is Emperor going to send? Some bureaucrat? Please. HE IS GOING TO SEND HIS ENFORCER. Vader's presence in the movie is not just logical, it's necessary from the story point of view especially if the rumor about how close to ANH this film is ending is true.

Will Vader in the movie drive extra ticket sales? Of course. He will motivate many among the general movie going audience. But, I believe they will use him sparingly. I think he will have a single major scene in the movie - major enough to put the cherry on top of those 97 or so percent K-2SO is talking about. The Rebels aren't facing just the military might of the Empire but the Dark Lord of the Sith as well. I believe we might hear about him throughout the film and feel his presence, but he will show up near the end when we already care for all our new characters - to rip our hearts out. And probably theirs.

I agree that having him in the movie makes sense and is important to the story as others have already stated. It will be a small but significant part.

I think he will show up at the end, executing Rebels(and/or Krennic) but his role will be small. I don't believe it to be a cash grab: Vader is the highest enforcer of the Empire, it wouldn't make sense for him not to be there, where such a big Rebel mission takes place.
