It's the place where he lost everything and was at his most weakest and vulnerable, yet at the same, this is what allowed him to become even stronger and greater for it.
Also, in the Art of Rogue One book, it states that Vader never seeks comfort anywhere, but in the quiet of Mustafar as he watches the lava rivers, it's the only place he feels truly comfortable.

It's kinda funny, two weeks before R1 was released in cinemas I had created the "Vader's castle in the ST" thread. And we got his castle in R1 and furthermore there is now a high probability that the castle will indeed play a role in the ST. I'm even more excited for EPVIII and IX. R1 won't be the last the witness Vader's greatness.

Speaking of the castle scene, I've been trying to understand the reason for Krennic's visit. I haven't yet had a chance to re-watch the movie, so perhaps someone could explain this to me?

Why did Krennic travel to Vader's castle? Was he summoned, or did he request to go there? Was talking to Vader a means of conveying Krennic's concerns/requests to the Emperor?

He was trying to pull an end run on Tarkin who had just taken Krennic's baby (the Death Star) away from him.
Krennic knows that the Emperor is the #1 guy. Vader and Tarkin are his next up. He lost to Tarkin but thought he could get Vader to tell the Emperor of his work instead of Tarkin. Problem being he didn't know the relationship between Tarkin and Vader.
it highlights Krennic's desire to climb the ladder and work his way to the top. It's what he wanted most. Power and notoriety.

Vader's anger and annoyance at Krennic's visit is completely understandable, I would be angry too if I had been forced to get out of the bath.

    ;)

I don't have the link in front of me but Pablo Hidalgo confirmed it was Mustafar on Twitter. And I believe you're right!

It's explained in the novelization.. I'll have to find the link. Vader summoned him, which took him by surprise.. but he saw it as an opportunity to try the "end run" if he was to survive the encounter lol

Here's a couple very interesting snippets from the Novelization of Rogue One that were posted on Reddit. The first a communique between Tarkin and Krennic. The second describing the scene between Vader and Krennic on Mustafar:

I know these movies are made for the original fan boys, but for newcomers I think not having the planet name is prob annoying and mistake. I think they both didn't want to reveal that the Vader scene was up, but also(maybe more so) wanted to avoid using a prequel trilogy name which is bs. Its become obnoxiously apparent in these last two films that they are discounting the pt which is what many grew up on and like. Bummer.

Hayden would be too young to be anakin in the chamber even with all that damage...it would be easy to tell..

But theyve never been named in any other movie before.

The planet wasn't labeled because they wanted it to be a bit more organic the first time you see Vader...
If it's labeled Mustafar then you go "Here comes Vader!"
But if you see lava with no label you go "Hmm is that Mustafar? OH blast IT IS BECAUSE FREAKING VADER"

It's a subtle thing done to extend the excitement of seeing Darth Vader for the first time in a decade

I thought they did a lot to acknowledge the PT in Rogue One, actually. The inclusion of Bail Organa and Mon Mothma, same actors.. the canonizing of a deleted scene from ROTS (between Bail, Mothma and Padme). Even the score subtly hinted at the PT during Vader's scene on Mustafar. And it was MUSTAFAR! And they had a quick shot of Corruscant. I'm sure there's a lot more.

If we have to live with the prequel trilogy existing, then you have to live with us wanting to pretend it doesn't exist.

You can like or dislike whatever you want. I just don't appreciate professionals and supposed sw fan directors avoiding the prequels. It's disrespectful to Lucas and not what everyone wants

I really like that despite trying to get an audience with the Emperor his entire life, Krennic never even met him. It adds so much to the Empire.

I don't know where this is coming from but they use the Prequels a lot. It may not fit the bias but there are even some in the TFA timeline 50 years later.

Call me a goon, but I missed this reference out of sheer awe of the film, when was this mentioned?

I liked the mix of Fantasy/Sci-fi the whole scene displayed. Very 'Star Warsian' if you will ;)
