1st - (@Mods) I did a search of titles only for Valerian. If there already is a Valerian thread, please message me the link and feel free to delete this thread.

I am wondering if I am the only one in the Cantina looking forward tho this film. I think this looks like a Luc Besson masterpiece. Of course I haven't seen it yet. But I can't think it will be bad. I think it will range in the 8-9.5 range for me. As a fan of premium formats, I'm happy to see that this looks like it will be one of the few to get into the ballpark with Avatar as far as 3D and visuals go.

Luc Besson did a qreat job on "The Fifth Element". That was a great film that could have been fantastic if it weren't for Chris "No Jar-Jar, I am your father!" Tucker. Besson then did another masterpiece with Messenger - brilliant cinematography.

He hit a bit of a slump in the late 2000s with a couple bad ones especially IMO "The Family". But he had a respectable bounce back with Lucy.

This is one of the top-5 most anticipated films of 2017 for me. Sound off Cantina :)

I'm stoked as hell for this movie. Apparently there was a lot of stuff from the graphic novel that inspired Lucas.

Yeah - I read an article on of the media sites that showed where Lucas had drawn aspects form Valerian and used them in the OT.

The main characters' ship design is very reminiscent of the Falcon.

And another shows two guys and a girl in a bar/cantina where the outfit the girl is wearing(and the girl herself) look almost exactly like Leia in the 1st scene in ROTJ

The comic book which this film adapts was one of many inspirations that George used while creating the Original Trilogy.

It looks new, fresh, exciting & fun. Therefore it will flop like Jupiter Ascending. Also it will battle (pun intended) Dunkirk in its second week.

It looks really cool, but I'm sure it will flop. I hope I'm wrong, I love Fifth Element and would like to see more of these crazy and original sci-fi movies.

I wish I shared your optimism. For me, this film shapes out to be like a Christmas bauble - visually stunning on the outside, completely hollow on the inside.

I party blame Hollywood. The summer season is overstuffed like a poorly made turkey dinner.

Not letting the pessimism dampen my enthusiasm. I think this one will be a surprise hit. This is not the Grapes of Wrath or Forrest Gump or some masterpiece of storytelling. These films are fun thrill-rides like roller-coasters. It seems to me that if it is not SW or MCU and it is space-based Sci-Fi it is pre-detemined to be a bomb. That seems closed-minded to me,

And this is not the Wachowski's who were already on a downward spiral. Personally, i think Luc Besson deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Rather if it good or bad it still haves 2 fight (pun intended) Dunkirk. Because it's a period piece if any gf's bring bf's 2 the movies the gf's rather wood c Dunkirk over Valarian.

Dunkirk is gonna steal so much thunder. Period piece 4 ladies. War 4 guys. Combat 4 COD pinheads. A classic tentpole film.

Chics would rather see a dark, somber war flic versus a fun action-adventure with some romantic aspects? ... News to me.

I'm betting age will be a far greater factor. Over 35 = strong Dunkirk lean. Under 35 = strong Valerian lean.

I guess I don't fit neatly into any category (as I have been told throughout my life) as I am 52 yrs old but want to see them both.

They both look like potentially great films.

On a side note: Am I the only person wondering why one of these studios with big July tentpoles did not move their release to June 30th? We just had that long 4-day(for many, like me) holiday weekend, And aside from Baby Driver(which - though not super-excited for - I will eventually go see), there was nothing at the box office that interested me(I already saw WW twice). I normally would go see 1 or more movies over the 4th of July weekend, but did not go to the theater at all this time. I think Spiderman:Homecoming missed out on some serious extra cash by passing up on this long holiday weekend.

    Except Jupiter Ascending was turrible.

If Valerian is at least solid, it will do well.
It won't crush opening weekend but word of mouth will spread and it will have legs like Edge of Tomorrow.
    --- Double Post Merged, Jul 5, 2017, Original Post Date: Jul 5, 2017 ---
Well, no movie has ever cracked 100 million domestic on a July 4th weekend and Spider-Man 2 did very well there nearly 15 years ago at 88 million....Despicable Me 3 shares a large portion of the same base as Homecoming wants, and they have owned 2 July 4th weekends so they were likely smart to avoid going head to head with them for that spot.

They have eyes on a 100+ opening. They didn't have a shot there with Despicable Me 3 there. Too much cross over.
This weekend they have nothing new to worry about. Homecoming is basically alone against indy flicks for openings.

Not a fan of Luc Besson, he lacks depth in his movies.
