We don't thats why Anakin will do for now until Rey ore Kylo create a bigger moment that will allow them to succeed him.

Kylo's one I've never considered! That could be interesting. I find it strange that the Jedi believed that bringing balance to the force was eradicating the dark side, whereas I would consider that a total absence of balance.

Whether or not the Jedi misread the prophecy, George Lucas has stated that Anakin was the Chosen One and that he fulfilled the prophecy by destroying the Sith. Personally, I don't see a lot of wiggle room there.... so it's a good thing I'm not tasked with writing the new stories!

Perhaps (as others have suggested to me in other threads) that was the end of one cycle, and now that there's been some time a new cycle with a new era of Sith can begin manifesting itself. But I don't think they could, or should, use TFA to erase key components of the story thus far.

I agree. George Lucas, the creator of the Star Wars universe, like him or not, has said that Anakin was the Chosen One, as through his fall and redemption. He took down the Phantom Menace, the secret evil that lurked in the shadows during the Prequel times and then during the Original trilogy as he chose to save his son, and sacrifice himself to destroy the leader of the Sith of that time. That said, the way things have a system and come back around, I believe the Force has Awakened to combat the Dark side that has been either stirred up or has awoken also from it's dormant stage.

I think it's like a yin and yang, black and white, good and evil always present in checks and balances. Such as in biblical writings, evil is present to show men the difference between the light and the dark. How does one know good, without knowing what is bad; hence the "tree of knowledge of good and evil". How does one truly experience victory without knowing the pain of defeat? Thus the term... a necessary evil.

With the new canon in full swing now, I think it's safe to conclude that any of Lucas' ideas may not necessarily hold true. For example, the treatments he passed on for the ST were rejected. I'm not saying that what he's said previously definitely isn't true, but there is room for change and it's fun speculating as to the identity of such changes.

Rey is the real chosen one. She will be the one who will single handedly destroy the Sith.

Let's recall a scene from The Phantom Menace, shall we?

Yoda: Master Qui-Gon. More to say have you?

Qui-Gon: With your permission, my master, I have encountered a vergence in the Force.

    Yoda: A vergence, you say?

    Mace: Located around a person?

Qui-Gon: A boy. His cells have the highest concentration of midi-chlorians I have seen in a life-form. It was possible he was conceived by the midi-chlorians.

Mace: You refer to the prophecy of The One who will bring balance to the Force. You believe it's this boy?

Anakin is the Chosen One. The prophecy may have been misinterpreted, though. As George has said.

There's about three ways to go about it.

    1. There's still a Sith lurking around and that is alive. As referenced in Revenge of the Sith of a character cheating death. Possibly a Sith preventing the Force from having balance.

    2. Luke and Leia represent the Dark and Light Side respectively. Just as the Father represents Balance. As shown and used in the Mortis Arc.

    3. A combination of all of these things. With each having to die for the Force to have literal Balance.

I wouldn't strictly say the dialogue means Anakin is the chosen one. Although we hear that Anakin was a virgin birth, we don't strictly know this as truth (Schmi could have lied) and we don't know whether it was the force that created him. It could have rather been a Sith Lord manipulating the force (as was attempted in the old Legends stories).

I'm enjoying your interpretation of the Mortis arc. I'd not thought of Anakin as the father/balance. I'd always interpreted it as Anakin having all parts in him, but you raise a valid analogy!

I think it was Darth Plagueis. As said in legends in a novel George helped guide to what could and couldn't be in it. There's this line as well from Revenge of the Sith that connects with this group of lines from The Phantom Menace. Especially that of Qui-Gon. " Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and wise that he could use the Force to influence the midi-chorlians to create ... life."

Thanks, I appreciate it. In a way it makes sense. Remember at the end of Return of the Jedi that Leia is able to sense Luke is off of the Death Star and the small time on Cloud City. Possibly she was just beginning to feel more strength with the Force but, the Father needed to die for her to fully experience it.

I think it was Anakin only because he would produce a family of powerful Jedi offspring that would reproduce and rebuild the Jedi Order after its demise at the hands of the Sith.

Not liking a prophecy or the PT has no bearing on whether or not a character is the subject of a prophecy.

Its clearly Anakin. Lucas said so. The story points to it. The fact that Anakin was created rather than born points to it. The crux is that everyone that hoped for the Chosen One wanted things on their terms. The expected all good and happiness for them and only death and destruction for their enemies. There are many examples from religion and myth that depict prophecies are fulfilled differently than the hopeful imagined. In the end though Anakin did step up and destroy the Sith. Which is pointed to as balance by Lucas. The jedi assumed that the Chosen One would do his work and the Jedi would be saved. Perhaps they would have if he was welcomed and trained. However other factors were involved certainly mistakes the Jedi made contributed. But in the end Luke's love for his dad and belief that he could be redeemed created the opportunity for Anakin to step into the destiny everyone thought was lost.

The ST will hinge on what people do with this the legacy left to them.

I certainly agree that the Jedi expected the prophecy to be fulfilled on their terms, regardless of who the chosen one was. I still feel that the way it played out was the only true path to balance in that both the Jedi and Sith were basically bulldozed. If all of the Sith were wiped out but you still had the Jedi order in its full reign it would hardly be balance at all!

This assumes the idea of balance is numbers. In which case a surviving trained Jedi would not be balance much less Leia as well. Further the Jedi have to have an idea of balance for them to welcome it as a good thing. "Hey guys there are 10k of us this kid will kill us all praise the force."

Balance is commonly distilled to be "destroy the sith" because that is the simplest of Lucas' many explanations. The long version is that like wheel of Karma becomes unbalanced through violence and oppression. The Balance of the Force in longer explanations was between the Cosmic Force and the Living Force. Sith because they were fueled by their passion and their concerns were selfish and limited to getting what they wanted their use of the Force pulled the Living Force out of alignment with the Cosmic Force. Thus they were not just oppressive pricks they were a spiritual cancer to the galaxy.

Lastly throughout both trilogies the Light side of the Force is a euphemism for good and the Dark side of the Force was one for evil. So balance conceivably means equal numbers. However this means that despite us loving our heroes and hoping that good triumphs over evil we should actually be happier when there is both good and evil. HUH? Good is good and evil is evil there is nothing gained by having both. So I doubt seriously after going on and on for years about SW being a good verses evil story is Lucas secretly telling us that some evil is really what's best for reality.

What makes you say that? And how does that not make the other 6 movies irrelevant?

Anakin was the chosen one.He destroyed the Jedi and the Sith.He brought balance to the force. The thing is ,the prophecy doesn't say(or at least I remember) that the chosen one will bring balance to the force FOR ETERNITY.What if Anakin brought balance to the force so that the Jedi and Sith could fight for another day? That's something that was mentioned already in this thread.George Lucas said that Anakin was the chosen one.All the havoc now is created by the Sequel trilogy. If SW stayed how it was, Anakin CLEARLY would have been the chosen one.But Anakin would be fulfilling the prophesy in some way if his descendant/s brought balance once more in the future.Maybe the destruction of the Death Star and the death of Palpatine didn't bring balance YET.I only voted for Anakin beacause GL said that he was the chosen one.It could be misread but we will have to find out: maybe in Episode VII,VIII,IX and it's possible we will never find out .

Truth is,@Aufman is the chosen one.

Like Yoda said. The Prophecy can be misunderstood. I see a circle of eternal fight over the other. The Dark Side like the Light Side are the Force´s essential parts and of life...They can´t be wiped out. There can be however an unbalance, that the Force will always equalize with its own methods...

The only difference is of how people outside of the Force-Conflict between Sith and Jedi see the Balance of the Force.

People who lived in the era of the Old Republic had peace if you think of peace in that way. But it was unbalanced und corrupted as everything.

The Jedi Order was corrupt in a way of letting things happen. Showing no resolution for a long time. The Sith were hidding, corrupting things they could effect.
