RUMOR Was the quality of The Force Awakens worsened by editing? (Call sheet leaks)

Personally, If this is true, Im glad they cut it and we didn't see a lightsaber floating thru space and somehow surviving atmospheric re-entry and not breaking upon hitting the ground. I love TFA, it wasn't perfect (none are) but I think this would have raised some serious eyebrows. I think there are other viable explanation of how a long time smuggler/pirate could come across the saber than this one.

So it may have been what I called the "lightsaber relay race" aspect that they reworked and ultimately cut from the movie. It was like a game of hot potato where it got passed around over and over and over again in the leaked scene lists.

 

I'm pretty sure that the lightsaber back story, and the scenes with stormtroopers in Maz's castle was dropped when Maz Kanata changed from being a fortune teller to a space pirate.... I think the flashback being reworked into a vision Rey sees when she touches the lightsaber worked a bit better, as it set up her Force sensitivity a lot more.

There's a lot of other scenes that got cut, which I would have liked to have kept.

I also kind of liked how the end of the duel originally played out. Hux is told go find Kylo BEFORE Rey defeats him, Hux would then find him, but see Rey across the chasm. It makes it easier to see that they both got away, because the way it's cut now, really seems to be pushing things.

 

Only scene I wished was kept would be Rey finding the map to Luke in the Star Destroyer.

 

Most of those things were cut because they will be part of a more elaborate sequence in Episode VIII

 

The young Kylo Ren scenes seem interesting, but the lightsaber in space scene is just silly to me. I'd be curious to see these scenes if they were filmed though.

 

If they were filmed, could they include hem in VIII like what GL did with AOTC and ROTS ?

 

You mean the Death Star. It was in Palpatine's throne from the second Death Star.
For some reason, a lot of the throne room was intact, and crashed on a water planet....

 

Huh? Not sure what you're referring to here. I don't remember any material from TPM being put into AOTC or ROTS.

 

Yeah... the closest I can think of is that Tatooine stuff from ROTS that they filmed when they made AOTC, just so they didn't have to go back there for a 2 minute scene, with actors that didn't appear in the rest of the 3rd movie.
But it's not like it was cut from AOTC and put into ROTS.

On my third viewing I noticed that right after Maz gives the lightsaber to Finn they hear a sound coming from above. She looks up and says something along the lines "they are here". I noticed that she doesn't just look up, she also moves both arms up, almost like preparing for a force push. The scene is cut right after that. Next time we see them they are above ground.

 

"Those beasts" is the line you're looking for.
But yeah, next time we see them, they are split up, and Finn no longer has his blaster.
Not only was the ensuing sequence to explain this cut from the movie, but it was noticeably absent from the novel too.

 

After seeing the film for my 5th time, i can firmly say i believe editing played a huge part in the lack of context for certain emotional beats. theres a better movie in there somewhere.

 

A 3 hour extended edition would fix it.

 

I meant like how the end of ROTS was filmed during AOTC for specific reasons .

 

That's what they did initially, but that footage was scrapped and it was all reshot in a green stage.

 

Having read the rumors, needless to say I am SOOOOOOOOOO glad that the lightsaber story wasn't included. It was just way too illogical of a plotline to throw in, like something out of the prequels.
