    Good evening all.
Long time lurker, first time poster.

Exciting times for Star Wars fans... and it is becoming hard to start new speculation threads on things that have not been discussed or not based on things we see and hear from unofficial or official sources...

By seeing the pictures, posters, trailers, spoilers...etc... one thing keeps coming to my mind...

What is the significance of the OT and PT weaponry for our heroes in the ST?

    Let's start with THE LIGHTSABER.

We've heard Finn wields it, Rey, even POE... that Kylo built one by himself but he is no Sith... One falls from the sky and is traded and sold and used by a "clan" against "the Seven"...

    Here's my theory.

By the time of TFA, the Lightsaber is no longer considered as a Jedi's weapon. It's a collector's rare piece of weaponry. It's not considered as a weapon that can only be used by a Jedi, or a Sith... but, like a Katana we'd get on Ebay.

An old relic, powerful one. Kylo Ren would be the "Star Wars Kid" of his time (ok..ok... I go too far)... but I am sure you get my point.

It's not like Han, grabbing Luke's saber in ESB to open a Tauntaun belly feeling a little ankward and knowing he's playing with a Jedi's weapon.... it's more like... it's a cool and powerful weapon from ancient time... if I am lucky enough to get one, I am going to use it and try not to cut myself in the process...

Maybe someone like Kylo or an historian would know the VALUE of such a weapon... but that might be why we have several characters using lightsabers in TFA. Even if they are not Force sensitive. I even think they might play with that fact in the movie to create the suspense on WHO is the NEW chosen one... Luke's next apprentice.

    BULLETPROOF VEHICLE PARTS (AT-AT, AT-ST...)

Like I said in another thread, Rey built her shelter out of an old AT-AT shell. We've seen a photo of an organic creature that has parts of an AT-ST or something like that on it, like a bulletproof vest. My theory is that it has some resell value for scavengers. Wanting to protect themselves against the First Order and/or the Resistance, people are buying spare parts from old Imperial Walkers to reinforce their shelters and shields.

There technologies that were in the OT and PT that could be valuable for resale in the ST:

    Carbon Freezing.
    Ray Shields (kiddin)
Lightspeed technology (Maybe that's why Rey is so interested in refurbishing the Falcon)
    Ion Cannons
    Cloning Tech

And what are the technologies that must have improved A LOT by the time of TFA:

    Cybernetics
    Communications
    Cloaking
    Firepower
    Robotics

I, too, have thought about the significance of lightsabers in the time period of TFA. During the original trilogy they would certainly be known, and probably viewed as totally taboo (and among the less honorable in society, very valuable). But 30 years later without the Empire enforcing a strict NO-JEDI policy, but with those who were alive during the time of the Jedi passing on, the lightsaber could be a very mysterious object. And this particular lightsaber... I don't know. Something about it sure gets everyone's attention at the beginning of the movie. We don't know what, yet.

    Sorry, started to ramble there.

But I'm with you. I could totally see someone who was not trained to use it pick it up and try without knowing the context and the significance of his or her actions.

Well, the lightsaber has its journey in the Star Wars Saga:

    Episode I - Someone with a lightsaber is definitely a Jedi... it's a symbol
Episode II - This weapon is YOUR LIFE. A Jedi cannot survive without it.
Episode III - The lightsaber can be used by a non-Force user (Grievous) to fight a Jedi... and, it's not Invincible (Can be stopped by Force pikes)
Episode IV - The lightsaber is obsolete and forgotten. It's an old weapon that is considered vintage and useless.
Episode V - A Jedi doesn't need a Lightsaber to win a battle. The Force is what makes a Jedi powerful.
Episode VI - Only a trained Jedi can build one, but still, Luke tosses it away to face the Emperor.

So... what's next for the weapon? Knowing what we know from the last episodes?

Episode VII - You can pose as a Force user by igniting a Lightsaber, but only a Jedi can build one. So, Lightsabers must be rare (real ones)... some may try to build the weapon (ending up with something as unstable as Kylo's)... but a REAL lightsaber, built by an actual Jedi must be the most valuable and rare thing by the time of TFA.
