I'm not looking to start a fight, nor am I picking on RJ at all (I happened to love TLJ), but with the extremely vocal critics of this film (and the "disappointing" box office)* I'm wondering if Kathleen Kennedy is getting cold feet. We all know she has a clear history of parting ways with directors, so is the current situation such that she may pull the trigger once again?

Again, let's try to keep this civil. Thoughtful comments are genuinely appreciated. Thanks!

*the level of "disappointment" in the box office varies from person to person, so that's a debate for another thread.

I would like to see more "wierd" things (I love Lynch, Cronenberg and Kubrick for example) in SW. So I am ok with RJ. I loved TLJ by the way.

Probably too early to tell. But if the backlash continues, and the final box office numbers/Blu Ray sales are disappointing, I wouldn't rule it out

I am more than okay with the new trilogy seeing light, and I hope Disney sticks with RJ!

More then any vocal critics or any backlash, this is what's really important:

They have great working relationship with him and they like his work. Unless Disney twists her arm (though I doubt it), he'll get his trilogy. Now, he might buckle under pressure if horrible people continue threatening him online, like they started after reading the spoilers. He might say: "I don't need this." and walk away. And that, in my opinion, would be a shame.

I too hope his trilogy comes to fruition, but it did strike me as odd it was announced before the public saw TLJ. I suspect it was mostly to drum up enthusiasm for the film, but in retrospect it seems to have been a somewhat impulsive move.

They've been threatening him for some time, but previously they've complained about how The Last Jedi might be a copy of Episode V. Thinking of it right now it's quite funny what were the concerns of fans before the premiere...

Cancellation or RJ walking away are my biggest fears for SW going forward. The potential for an original trilogy that explores new worlds is truly exciting and should the worst come to fruition, I can't help but feel that it would signify a major step back for the franchise.

I don't want SW to continually play it safe. Give us something new, brave, and different!

Like what? It is easy to demand different directions but hard to describe these directions.

    Let's see.

His production was the one with the least problems.

Even TFA had Ardnt being let go, Ford's injury and rewrites.

Besides, this is a fresh trilogy. He's not even using preexisting characters, which seems to be his biggest criticism for TLJ.

Do you want examples? That's not my job. There's an infinite amount of possibilities... and judging by RJ's track record, I'm sure he can create something fresh.

By the time the theatrical run of TLJ ends, Disney will have financed the entire production costs of the trilogy.

Rian and Lucasfilm probably knew that the film would cause plenty of heated debate and decided to announce the trilogy early to take some heat of it.

No chance and i'm looking forward to what he does

His trilogy will be canceled if he decides not to do it or the story he creates doesn't get approved. Ultimately the story will have to win over Lucasfilm. It's still very early in the process. I'm actually kind of surprised Lucasfilm announced it based on RJ's pitch story. It sounds like there's no story so far. Maybe they're waiting to say anything else until they get closer.

As long as it makes money, not a chance. I was a little afraid that he would decide not to do the trilogy after being exposed to the Star Wars fandom's dark side, but I hope he takes it well.

(Just to be clear, I'm talking about angry fans on RT and social media, not people who criticise the movie in a civil, normal way).

It won't get "cancelled". The project is happening no matter what. A situation may happen where Rian appears to step down but the project isn't getting cancelled and he's not going to be overtly fired from the project based on TLJ backlash.

I think the announcement of that trilogy was more of a pr move than anything. There’s no story, there’s no script. Bob Iger has to approve a script before anything gets made.

They may as well keep Rian as the damage has already been done. You can't undo the TLJ and you can't undo the damage that the TLJ did to the TFA.

Whilst TFA was not such a bad film TLJ just makes it completely irrelevant. I can't watch TFW again because I know what happens in TLJ. All of the suspense and cliff hangers materialised bizarrely into nothing. So basically SW finished with the return of the last jedi.

One could hope that JJA can undo some of the mess that Rian has created with SW9 but given that Rian will direct 3 more films afterwards means that we will all be back to square one again.

So yeah, basically who cares. SW is finished. It is such a same but there you go. Disney will keep putting out cheap junk in the name of SW but it won't be SW.
