After the backlash TLJ got, it's hard to say. I like that he did something different, and out of the norm. I think having his own trillogy with new characters and storyline to go nuts and do whatever he wants is great. He can do it without fans claiming he ruined whatever character.

I was under the impression that many felt the backlash was a myth. I can't shake the suspicion that Bob Iger feels somewhat different on the issue.

I dont think the backlash is as big as some people think but there is a group that disliked TLJ.
I dont know how Disney feels but since they gave him is trilogy before TLJ came out the y seem to have liked what he did.

If anything this news increases the odds his trilogy would be cancelled. Why would they announce a new series of Star Wars movies right after TLJ ended its movie run. I know they said it won’t affect RJ trilogy but that’s probably just so nobody freaks out cause when they decide to cut his trilogy not as many people will care because we are already getting a Star Wars series from game of thrones directors.

nah, this doesn't show that RJ might be canned: it shows that LF is starting to realize that the anthology movies need to stop happening and they need to actually expand Star Wars.

if RJ is making a trilogy and GoT guys are making their own series (likely a trilogy) then that allows for two separate Star Wars stories to alternate the May/December time slot, keeping the tradition of one Star Wars movie a year.

Except that they said that it wouldn't be related to Rian Johnson's trilogy.
They still acknowledge his trilogy as a thing.

I didn't know restating the obvious thing they said in the video was necessary either but here we are.

Let me tell you something - not everybody cares for Game of Thrones and the number of people who care for The Last Jedi is bigger than you think.

Here's my theory. Lucasfilm weren't surprised by the backlash. They welcome it. The Last Jedi is the most talked about film in a long time. Controversy breeds publicity. Name another film that has commanded so many headlines in the mainstream media, so much online debate. And the fact is that the backlash is from a demographic that the franchise can afford to lose. Mostly male, mostly 30 - 50 years old. And it's a small minority. This is a break with the past, or at least a break with those unwilling to move with the times. The movie most of these fans wanted would have been terrible and far more people would have lost interest in the franchise. There'll still be the odd standalone film to appeal to these old school fans, but Star Wars is for all ages and the stuff that appeals to the youth fan base won't appeal to every adult.

For the record, I'm 42, male and i love The Last Jedi. It's right up there beside Empire for me, but a lot of my male friends weren't happy with it.

This is my opinion and I know its an unpopular one but I didn't like the Last Jedi. Being a huge Star Wars fan and being let down in a trilogy movie for me is very disheartening. If I had to describe TLJ in one word IMO it would be boring. I was literally sitting in the theater thinking to myself "Am I really this bored? How is this possible it's star wars!" and by the end even though there were a few cool scenes I ultimately was bored and not entertained. That being said, when and if Rian Johnson comes out with a new trilogy I can honestly say my expectations and excitement level will be at an all time low for a star wars movie if I'm to expect more of the same. So I disagree that not all publicity is good publicity. I think many fans are hesitant of a whole film series from a director who made a bad star wars film in my opinion and others. Just my 2 cents.

Is there any confirmation or something that Rian is still developing a new trilogy?
I mean, I liked TLJ (for the people who doesn't like it, I'm sorry, I trully hope you enjoy Solo and Ep.9!) and I'm curious about how he will develop a whole new trilogy.
But I was thinking maybe the movement with Benioff and Weiss it's more like a competence to see who finally develop a trilogy...
Or is it going to be a real bunch of movies alternating RJ with B&W?

You missed my point, which was Lucasfilm hired Johnson for the very reason that he would create something different, and knew that it woukd probably alienate some fans but delight many more. If Disney going to make money out of Star Wars far into the future - and why else would they buy it? - they need to cultivate a younger fan base and stop relying on a small ageing demographic who just complain about everything anyway.
    --- Double Post Merged, Feb 8, 2018, Original Post Date: Feb 8, 2018 ---
It was confirmed in the initial announcement that it's a trilogy and has been reiterated since.

I respect your opinion but I highly doubt Lucasfilm purposefully wanted a film that would alienate some fans and disregard the originally fan base.

Every time he gets interviewed (and he gets interviewed quite often) a question is asked about this new triolgy. Every time this question is asked he answers that he's develoing the story, but snce he's early into the process, he doesn't have much to share.
