Wait, you mean to tell me that they don't just randomly decide things on the fly?

As a fan who lives his life by the seat of his pants, I can't relate to that, so it must not be true! :p

    Yep lol. It's strange right?

    JJ writes up some treatments.
Rian comes in and writes up his.
All of them are gone over.
    They decide the best path.
    Rian writes his story.

There is no chance this happens... Unless I'm proven wrong. That's my response to that question.

Sure, it would not fit RJ's plot, but I wonder what JJ's initial thoughts were, and Hamill. I think the latter had imagined quite a few arcs and history as well.

Personally, I think there could be a lot of plot devices made to explain the above. A secret weapon/teachings at the jedi temple that was really important, the temple forming a "null zone", or the feeling of disturbance in the Force that was painful, but with unknown cause, and events that were to recent to take decisive action. Or perhaps Luke's underlying fear of falling to the dark side if the anger turned to hate. He is his father's son, after all. That's just off the top of my head...but RJ chose a different path.

Yeah, it would really be interesting to know more of what goes on at Lucasarts :)

Nothing creative goes on at Lucasarts now, as it no longer makes games since 2013 when Disney acquired it in the takeover and then fired all of its development team.

Instead, Lucasarts now merely licences out the Lucasarts name and Star Wars brands to third party developers like Dice and EA who actually make the games.

It is unlikely we will ever see a real and original Lucasarts game like those in the Monkey Island series ever again....

Disney will look at the data. The Last Jedi was a hit and then Lucasfilm made a film for fans and it bombed. The fans like Solo and guess what.... audiences don't like it as much as The Last Jedi. So this idea that Rian Johnson is the reason Solo isn't doing well is one of fantasy dreamed up by an angry minority who don't really matter. Marvel has done a good job making films that both audiences and critics enjoy. Lucasfilm did that with their first three films with Disney and failed with Solo.

I think Solo is a bit of a tainted litmus test. Yes it was a clear test on what fans want but the behind the scenes struggles put an unwarranted cloud over it for fans.

Those two questions are different in my mind. Will they connect? I think so. Recently Star Wars has done a fantastic job at connecting the universe together. The comics all connect. The Battlefront 2 story connected to both the ST films and it's own tie-in book. Rebels and TCW did a great job connecting the history together. So if these films do happen (and I think they will), I have no doubt they'll connect.

But will they crossover? That's the bigger question, and honestly I kinda doubt it. This is a point where Star Wars falters, and I'm not sure how yet to fix it. I mean, sure they'll have little crossovers here and there, but nothing mind-blowing.

MIND YOU I HAVEN'T SEEN SOLO YET SO I CANNOT CONFIRM OR DENY A SPECIFIC CAMEO I'VE HEARD ABOUT.

It does, it does! But the MCU doesn't connect the way Star Wars does. If something happens in a Star Wars comic, there's always a chance I'll hear about it in a book or a tv show down the line. They've got that internal consistency on lock. But the MCU completely ignores the television and Netflix side of its universe. On one hand that makes sense - why would the Avengers concern themselves with street level heroes? But on the other hand, why would Iron Man go through the process of recruiting a 15/16 year old kid when there's a bulletproof, nigh-indestructible adult down the street? Or why wasn't SHIELD's revival mentioned in Civil War or any of the other down-to-earth movies? Or even in the Netflix shows?

I say all this to point out that yes, the MCU movies do crossovers very, VERY well. Something that fans who like those sort of interactions get a kick out of (I fall into that category, but I have a couple of friends who hate it). But it's not a perfect ratio either.

None so far, because they're probably still working on it. Maybe they're actually talking about it crossing over behind closed doors. I'm not saying I don't want them to crossover, because like you I really really do! But I also want them to have time to work on their scripts and stories without us second-guessing every single thing before they're even taking steps.

Do you imagine a convention with Ryan Johnson on stage at the moment ?

Not sure he'll get a standing ovation.

I know people won't agree but the fact that Solo is bombing does not help Rian Johnson's case for a trilogy. Disney can't afford to take any more chances on something that might not be a success and letting Rian direct an entire trilogy after the backlash of TLJ is a huge gamble.

But Solo, the safest Disney SW made yet, is doing the worst at the box office. Not only that, TLJ's production cycle was the smoothest out of all the recent SW films. It was finished two-three months before the premiere, it was made without going overbudget (it's the cheapest Disney SW film with a budget around $200 million.) Rian Johnson was the only Disney SW director who didn't need to do reshoots, he is highly collaborative, the atmosphere on his set was really good (he's never shouted on anyone during the shoot and that is surprisingly uncommon in movie business.) Rian with TLJ showed that he's perfectly able to work within confines of a studio system and he's able to deliver a film that satisfies the executives (it had to be approved by the big suits at Disney, after all,) critics and that made money at the box office (it earned over 1.3 billion dollars. That is A TON of money.) Some people didn't like it? Oh well. There's probably as many (if not more) people who loved it (I'm not talking about "liking" TLJ. If general audience members didn't "like" it, it wouldn't have made $1.3 billion.) I really believe that sacking him would be silly.

Can it happen? Of course. I was convinced that Colin Trevorrow will stay to direct IX and that obviously didn't happen, so I may very well be wrong. But if this guy convinced Disney and Lucasfilm that making a film aboout a Luke who's lost his faith in the Jedi and in himself and in the end dies is a good idea and his position was never put into question throughout VIII's production, then I find it really hard to imagine what would Rian have to propose in order for Lucasfilm to sack him.

You lost me after your first sentence. To say Solo is the safest star wars movie couldnt be further from the truth. To take one of the most beloved characters in star wars and recast him with a different actor is probably one of the biggest gambles disney could have taken and it didnt pay off. Not only that but people complained right off the bat. This was the farthest thing from a safe bet further validating my point.

People are already complaining about Boba Fett. People will likely complain about other movies that get announced down the line. People complaining about Star Wars is not anything new. And where Solo disappointed, Rogue One excelled. People forget that, even when you take whatever amount of money Solo loses for Lucasfilm, you still get a franchise that has made upwards of $4B and near $5B by the time the latest movie's box office run is finished. One flop < three mega-hits.

The issues with Solo wasn't that people were complaining, just that it wasn't marketed well enough and that it went way over-budget. Not to mention that there was comparatively less interest in the film to begin with. It was never going to make Rogue One numbers, and as far as I can tell, that movie overperformed to Disney's expectations (they repeatedly told their investors not to expect The Force Awakens money from the spin-off). A $103M domestic opening, while disappointing, would have been good for a movie that was $125M (which is what Solo cost as originally intended).

By the time that Rian Johnson's first movie (which I stress is the only one he's confirmed to direct) comes out, it'll be about 2022 by my estimate. Five years after The Last Jedi and a few years after Episode IX presumably brings skeptical fans back into the fold. Maybe four years if they really work at it, but he's not in a rush to make it and neither are Lucasfilm. But in any case, the movie will be one that's likely a lot less expensive than The Last Jedi, and with a director at the helm that the company trusts, meaning that there will be minimal post-production issues with the project. All stuff that, in Disney's eyes, should not be seen as "risky".

I'm pretty sure he got standing ovations when he did the promotional tour for TLJ's Blu-Ray release, so...

(Also, don't give me that "they'll boo him at Celebration" nonsense. If people really pay to go to Celebration to boo someone as a way of "getting at Disney", then they're idiots who are still rewarding Disney either way and will have wasted a ton of travel money for that purpose - and time, when accounting for how long it will take to actually get into a panel he's in, presuming you get there early enough to not get relegated to the streaming room.)

As I've said a few times the most likely reason this film is never made is that Rian Johnson doesn't come up with a good story to tell. Lucasfilm knows that RJ understands Star Wars (despite what the very vocal minority will say). The challenge going forward for Lucasfilm is telling new stories that aren't related to the old trilogy.

Lucasfilm is going about it the right way. Give content producers the ability to scope out a story first and then make the films.

Or a trilogy with characters as deep as Kylo Ren and Luke Skywalker. ;D

These were the characters Rian wanted to focus on.
