This. This is the only legitimate reason for the trilogy to get canceled.

If Rian gets a brain fart and decides that mynock farming is a good foundation for the trilogy or some such thing.

These are not the main characters, those are secondary characters made to further the development of Poe and Finn. Based on "Brick" and "Looper", RJ is perfectly capable of creating deep main characters.

What every poll says is that The Last Jedi have most votes when it comes to favorite movie of Disney era. That is nothing you brush away even it is the - most certain - least favorite movie as well. But hey, if you dont like Rian Johnson movies, no one will force you to see it.

You mean characters like Boba Fett, Lando Calrissian, Count Dooku or General Grievous who were introduced during a second movie of a trilogy as "supporting characters" ?

Aunt Beru has more charisma than Rose Tico ...

Boba Fett in the OT is just a guy in a cool armour. What's so deep about him? Any real charater development came from the Clone Wars. General Grievous was introduced in the third movie and I woudn't call him a deep or well developed character. Count Dooku is the main antagonist of AotC and his depth is on par with a typical movie antagonist. Kylo Ren in TLJ was way better written and developed. Lando? Sure, that I'll give you.

... Please tell me you're not trying to use General "My Four Arms are My Personality" Grievous as an example of a deep and meaningful character...

I mean, he's fine. He's got a cool design. The prequel trilogy should've probably focused on having less, more meaningful villains, but he's fine.

But with perhaps the exception of Lando and Dooku, all of those characters are extremely shallow. And that's okay. The Wookieepedia article doesn't need to be twenty-five pages long for every single character in the series.

I think the Rian Johnson trilogy will get canned if Kathleen Kennedy steps down at Lucasfilm before the first part of the trilogy begins shooting.

The relatively poor performance of SOLO at the box office so far along with the productions issues have given Disney something to think about. Now I'm of the opinion that the main reason SOLO is struggling is down to TLJ. Okay there were the production issues and the marketing for the film was a bit too late in the day but there is no doubt that the divisiveness of TLJ has hurt SOLO badly which is a shame as for me it's a far better film than TLJ.

Sequels ride on the success of the previous film, and with success and set up of TFA, Rian Johnson's sequel was never going to be a box office flop but despite it's financial success fans are split with TLJ and it's this that has damaged the following Star Wars film.

Disney and Lucasfilm now have to look at the situation, and take note of the discord that Rian Johnson's film has caused amongst the fans. If Kathleen Kennedy remains in charge then I think she will fight Rian's corner and this trilogy will go ahead. If she's out of the picture then I just can't see it happening.

I really don’t see it being cancelled. Yes a lot of people did not like the last Jedi. I however don’t think that comes into play. RJ was one of the only directors that Lucasfilm has not had a problem with other then JJ, but after IX I think JJ is done with SW. so they can count on RJ to get it done.

Fortunately Disney and Lucasfilm are run by people who use real data. So this myth on the internet that The Last Jedi is a decisive failure will play no part in future plans.

Industry analysts dismiss this theory immediately because there's no real data to support it.

The fact is most people loved the movie.

TLJ was a Box Office hit, there is no denying that but it is a divisive film.

As I said in the previous post, the success and set up of TFA meant that TLJ was always going to be a Box Office hit. Fans were desperate to see what happened next, will there be the same excitement and enthusiasm for Episode 9? I doubt it.

You are correct is saying that there is no real data to support that TLJ was divisive so it can't be proven either way. We just have to go by our own opinions based on what we see and read.

My opinion is that TLJ was a divisive film and the effect that has had on fans is the main reason that SOLO is struggling, it's not the only reason but the main one.

It will be interesting to see how well Episode 9 does compared to TFA and TLJ.

Rian Johnson seems wedded to KK. If she goes I think there is a real chance RJ's trilogy gets canned.

I'm not really going on my opinion. The scientific audience scores support that most people liked the film. As do most controlled samples. This isn't a denial that it's more decisive, but too many Star Wars fans are making the mistake of vastly inflating that number. The general audience is way larger than a small subset of fandom.

That's why analysts dismiss that it had any significant impact on Solo.

RJ pitched his story to Iger who approved it and it was the most profitable film in 2017. I'm sure he's pretty popular right now.

I'm not so sure that TLJ's earnings would have been as high if the novel of the film was freely available for fans to read and digest before the release of the film. People instead have been forced to see new films without the opportunity to read the stories beforehand, because of book release embargos and review blackouts.

This has been an unfair and sneaky tactic that DIsney have used in all four of their films now, blanket censorship of all their new Star Wars films and forcing all who are interested in the story having to pay to see it in the cinema, without a free decision to do so based on reading the novel, like we had in the PT and OT eras.

Why couldn't I read the TFA or TLJ stories weeks and months before the film release like I could with Revenge Of The Sith in 2005, Attack Of The Clone in 2002 or The Phantom Menace in 1999?

I personally think that the answer to that is honestly..."the internet". I can almost see their logic in it, considering that they're spending $250-$400M to produce these movies and don't want the spoilers flooding the net prior to the movies being released.

    @Trevor
But there was no "Spoiler" culture even as recently as 2005 for Revenge Of The Sith. If you, like me had the novel of ROTS, all you had to do was flick to the back page to read the end.

Obviously, the internet existed then too, as did film novels in book shops, freely available to buy and read weeks and months before the film was released.

The spoiler culture thing is more recent I think, it arrived when the BBC started making Doctor Who again, even one of the characters had the catchphrase "Spoilers!" (River Song) and became a meme. Spoilers were simply not a thing before then as I remember it.

Well, unless you've been living under a rock since 2005, that's changed dramatically....but you know that as you've been here. People now live for spoilers, and if they're available, they will be spilled over the net.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Scientific audience scores", do you mean audience scores from IMDB, RT etc?

To be honest I don't read too much into these scores, SOLO had over 10,000 scores on RT before the film was even released but if that is what you mean then TLJ is currently at 46% which would indicate the majority didn't like the film. I'm not bothered if more fans like TLJ, it's probably true but I don't think it's by a vast majority.

Also I'm not so sure RJ is as popular as you think except with Kathleen Kennedy that is, as I previously said TLJ was always going to be a hit after the success of TFA.

I still think the negative reaction to TLJ is the main reason for SOLO struggling.

Solo struggled because it had a conclusion that everyone could have predicted. Han, Chewbacca, Lando, The Falcon were all present and correct at the end of the film and they had to be, because they were all present in the "future" OT films.

Not once did I feel that they were never in any danger of being killed or destroyed and thats predictable and "boring" in a way. Plus Han's character is a bit overrated to me, he's only the "co-star" to the main protagonist of Luke Skywalker.

A "young Luke" film would have worked much better than a young Han film did, but that too would have had a predicable and safe conclusion, because Luke's character is in the OT.

I agree that predictability is also an issue, as was poor marketing and Han Solo without Harrison Ford but I'll stand by my main reason of TLJ.

I remember clearly having read the script of AOC or ROTS on the Internet before the movie.
