I agree it's "more" divisive, but I don't think it's a very big group. Plus, I'm not sure that group can be appeased in the long run without alienating new audiences. Lucasfilm can't tell stories about Luke forever. Luke is my favorite character and I'm an older fan, but love the new characters as well. Older fans won't be alive in 40 years and those films mean less to younger audiences. Lucasfilm has to appeal to younger audiences or the brand will die.

Yes, but it should be done in a way that does not alienate existing fans. I posted some SW demigraohics from YouGov earlier. The really enthusiastic SW fans are most likely to be middle age family men, with high income. And hispanic, surprisingly enough, for all the talk about the angre white male. Gender seem to be the most important factor....through all ages. Age seems to matter a lot less then gender. Character popularity also showed a huge gap from new (except Kylo Ren) to old cast. Especially Luke. Fault lines were never political, pretty even spread, a shame if that becomes a factor moving forwards.

I think they might have gone too far changing things up. They might end up losing more then they gain...in fact this seems likely the way their «base» looks now. They also might trade devoted rich family men for the fleeting aporoval of less invested fans...who might not even have kids. Episode IX will tell, but I think the drop-off from TLJ vs TFA and the solo flop, as well as the reactions strength should cause some alarm.

    I dunno, man.

If someone's a rich white guy (of which I sort of fit that category) and feels alienated because Star Wars isn't exclusively about people like them anymore, I'm not sure they're worth keeping around anyway.

I'd take a smaller, healthier, and diverse fanbase than a large, toxic, and prejudiced one.

middle aged family men with a high income belong to generation X: the smallest generation on record.
so no, Disney is not worried about alienating them and shouldn't be.
and as a hispanic member of that generation myself, i personally don't feel alienated at all.
but then i'm not a man, nor do i have a family. XD

look, demographics are important, but forecasting is more important. Disney isn't deliberately trying to alienate the older fans, but it is going to focus its energy on the largest population of the largest most industrialized countries, which, surprise surprise, is women. by the tiniest margin, but when you ask the question: why alienate the current shrinking fanbase? i ask the question why alienate half of the potential growing fanbase? there's no reason men can't still enjoy Star Wars, so what's the problem with making it a bit more appealing to women?

there's no cause for alarm. Solo had a troubled production and lost probably about 50 million dollars.
that's pocket change for Disney/Lucasfilm and more than likely they wrote it off before it even happened.

Lucasfilm is taking risks on purpose. because 1.) it can afford to. and 2.) that's the only true way you can make something great.
there are lots of popular movies that do well financially but are relatively safe in terms of script, production, etc.
Lucasfilm might flub it here and there, but they're trying new things. that's how it keep it alive and growing.

Lucas was an auteur. Lucasfilm is honoring his legacy by allowing creators to run wild with his world.
again, i think we should welcome this. i think we should be excited by this. i am excited by this.

i'm only sorry that's not true for everyone.

Don’t fall for that narrative. It is just a creation. Identifying a small venomous part of the fanbase to cover decisions and poor handling of the framvise. You should know as well as anyone that people have legit concerns. Do you truly find people so toxic here? It might just be a reflection of the extended base.

What "narrative"? That's just a buzzword.

You yourself just said that rich white men are feeling disenfranchised because they're not as heavily featured in the series now.

That's absolutely ridiculous and I'd never sympathize with it, regardless for what other motives Disney might have with their casting. Even with an agenda, at least this is a step forward.

I am also sorry for that, but happy it can hold some joy for the ones that are left.

The theory is sound, but it will take more then what we have seen so far to implement. Meanwhile, other fans will hemorrhage away...and SW I am afraid will further degrade. One ifs strengths compared to Star Shrek was that it was always more inclusive, and had a broader appeal. I think they ultimately will trade one base for a smaller one...

a tv series whose whole reason for existing was to show diverse men, women, and aliens working together in harmony for the good of the galaxy is less inclusive than a story about mostly white men fighting an evil empire of more white men? i'm sorry, i can't even begin to understand that reasoning.

Different movies appeal to different demographics. Twilight and the expendables in the extreme. This is just facts. It takes a good plot and great care to find something that appeals to all...perhaps near impossible, especially with scifi. And, please use the correct demo break down if you like to quote...it’s rich older hispanic men, according to stats. The narrative is that we should not take the criticism in because it has been painted as a being racist and misogynistic.

I'm not saying that it's racist or misogynistic that Star Wars has, historically, had this demographic.

I'm saying that those who feel threatened for no other reason than simply the demographic shifting may be- or, at the least, have some other seeded issues.

If one's anger at Star Wars is heavily implied in race or gender, what else would you suggest labeling that behavior as?

Sure, but how do you think the actual gender division was among fans? Do you think it was an even divide?

to be honest i don't actually care.
because i'm not making any money off of Star Wars last time i checked, i'm just enjoying the heck out of it.

not everyone likes everything. and that's okay.
sure it's okay with Disney/Lucasfilm too; they've been doing this for decades.

Missing the point. If the divide arose, it must be because something there generally appealed more to to one gender then the other. Which is quite ok...if you change the formula, you might end up removing the parts that made it so from the start. From a business persoective, you need to bring more new in then you lose, who are just as invested. I think that will fail from the looks of it. Perhaps if executed better...

You were referring to Star Trek, and that it had a broader appeal through the description you made for it. Do you not care what the actual facts are and if your assumption is correct? You can google it...

As for money...well, it decided budgets, and sometimes quality. If SW fails going onwards, there might be a lot of content you will never see.

no, i made no comment about it's "broader appeal". i said that the whole point of the show was inclusivity. maybe you're not using the word inclusive the way i am? Star Trek was deliberately designed to include women and minorities to make a statement about the need for humankind to work together.

beyond that, no, i don't care about the numbers. i like both franchises and i'm glad that Star Wars is thinking more about inclusivity in its new projects.
especially since women make up half the global population.

there is never any case in which it can be said that a balanced approach to serving the audience is a bad thing.
the ST is all about balance ~ that's interesting too, don't you think?

Yeah, I understand you loud and clear. What I'm saying is, if the only thing in the formula that has been changed that bothers a group is the demographics... good riddance to them! They won't be missed.

Again, you're the one who brought up how much some people dislike the new diversity in Star Wars. That, apparently, is a big issue for some people (and trust me, I believe you that it is).

And the reason it's a big issue is NOT because they're "changing the formula". You don't get to throw that in with other changes that may have been made. Disliking a film for its type of humor is a lot different than disliking it because it has some people of color in it.

This is really the sci-fi fantasy genre from the start.
It was almost always about this. I mean, X-Men is literally "If you think it's wrong to persecute and exclude your favorite mutants, don't you think you should extend this to OTHER FREAKING HUMANS?!?!"
