    Rofl!! :p

Keep in mind, most alcoholic beverages (with perhaps the exception of Breezer and the sweet varieties of liqueur), are an acquired taste!
The first time drinking beer, dry wine, gin, whisk(e)y or cognac can be pretty jarring or even outright traumatic!

So when you're finally old enough, find someone you trust (or a place like this) to help you ease into it!

Also you'd be wise to spend a little more on quality. Drinking cheap beer, wine or whisk(e)y as a first-timer can ruin your tastebuds and scare you away from trying the good stuff! ;)

Untill then... enjoy your fizzy sugarwaters and may the Force be with you! :)

Alright, this is one for the wine lovers (@Addi Ras)!

I spent last week tidying and packing up stuff back at the old homestead, and I came over two bottles of (cheap & poopy) sweet, white wine that my sister had left there when she moved out in 1999. This is the sort of stuff I would, under normal circumstances, never consider drinking… They were stored in a rack, but in a common, unused bedroom with WILDLY varying temperatures for 22 years. Today, after putting them in the fridge for the better part of the week, I tried the first one for poops and giggles.

Now, going in I was completely aware of the fact that there were no way in hell these wines were drinkable 20 years later, but one has nothing (but one’s health) to loose, right? So here we go…

This is a Schmitt Söhne, Rhine Lady, 1999 Liebfraumilch Nahe, 8.5% vol.
    Originally, some really poopy stuff!

It has an interesting smell: lots of apple, and… kerosene/paraffin (as I remember it from my early childhood living in a kerosene-heated house). The taste is quite complex for such a cheap wine; a sour apple taste (i.e. vinegar but not overpowering), sweet (but again, not overpowering), with a chemical component (kerosene?), and the sweet and sour interacts in fascinating ways. It has a pleasant texture, quite full, almost like a thick apple juice, and a surprisingly dry aftertaste (like eating a very green apple).

Don’t get me wrong, the wine is not really drinkable, but it is surprisingly interesting and complex for its quality and 22 years of bad storage. Except for it being basically poison at this point, I’m quite impressed how this one has aged! It’s almost a shame I have to pour it out…

Also, my tongue is fat numb.

That’s absolutely brilliant. If it’s any consolation I’m not sure this would have tasted any better at release :D.
The oldest bottle I have is a 1998 bottle of Gosset Champagne.

    Blue Nun.jpg

Here we go again, the second of my sister's 20 years abandoned cheap-butt, sweet white wine... Tonight’s exquisite drink, and the follow-up to last night’s fascinating bottle, is a 2002 Qualitätswein, Blue Nun, from Rheinhessen.

(Btw, to you un-Germancis out there, "Qualitätswein" translates into English as "Quality Wine"... Something which this bottle has never, ever, EVER been. Germans have a weird understanding of "quality", it seems :p )

I was slightly more optimistic this time around as this particular bottle had been consistently stored tip-down for all these years, and there were no signs of seepage or discoloring of the cork. Before opening it, I estimated a roughly 2% chance that this was drinkable.

Trying to de-cork it, I managed to break off the bottomn 1/5 of the cork, which was impossible to get up. I tried to spear it with a fondue skewer but only ended up pushing the cork bit down into the bottle. Even more problematic, I managed to drop the skewer in so now I've got the tool sitting inside my wine. Lovely.

Oh, well. It's not like a bit of cork and a fondue skewer is going to have any measurable impact on the wine at this point, so I'm gonna ignore that and go ahead. Here we go!

Hm... this one has a milder taste, but is otherwise much the same as last night's "virgin's milk". The vinager/chemical taste is less profound, and no-existing while rolling it around in the mouth. Actually, in the mouth it taste almost nothing, but the texture is, like the Liebfraumilch, thick and round, and actually surprisingly nice. The after taste, however, is quite horrid. Vinegar and extremely sour apples. As a plus, there is very little sweetness to this wine, comparied, I assume, to how it originally was, which is nice.

All in all, this is a much less complex wine than the Liebraumilch, but also marginally more drinkable. No, "drinkable" isn't the right word, "endurable" would be more correct. It tastes like cheap apple juice, sour from having gone slightly off, and with your hairiest uncle having dropped a dirty engine part from his fixer-up'er car into your glass, grease and oil and everything.

Hm... Being a Norwegian, and dirty poor, and an alcoholic, I'm gonna drink a glass or two of this and see what happens. For science! (And for @Addi Ras ;) )

Also, again, my tongue is fat numb... Weird.
