I'd say i'm more knowledgeable than the average film-goer when it comes to special effects, but I don't really know what JJ meant by this.. Were there planes flying around as they were filming or what?

Probably things like wires and safety rigging, stuff of that nature.

Also with on location shooting modern-day Earth elements might of been visible in some shots and they removed those... like maybe something at Skellig or Greenham Common

Removing bars, cables, wires, tracks, frames, mechanisms and blue-greenscreen performers, for example the puppeteer who operated the practical prototype C3PO in Episode One. Also erasing real world buildings and signifers on the outdoors sets and environments.

That's what I was thinking too aside from the wires, good call!

I wouldn't want this happening in Star Wars..

I would be funny if they had to edit out some drones.

    JJ:
    Sorry Mark. But, rest assured...
We WANT you in this movie.
Your HAND and saber will play a big part, central to the story!

    Mark:
All right! As Long as I get paid!

    JJ:
All you need is to sign this contract!

    Mark:
    You got it JJ!

    JJ:
All right, now that the contract is signed, you won't need this hand anymore, aren't you?

    Mark:
    Whaaaaat?

    JJ:
You know, Mark, we are going "practical" in this episode, no more CGI... Doctor Smith, please proceed!

    Mark:
    Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Maybe just some CGI trim on Mark's beard. They asked for a Noble Jedi beard, he came on set with the Lumbersexual ZZ Top, Unabomber mix. That will give TFA an Academy Award.

Man where was JJ when Leia's metal bikini was getting in the way?

But like has been said using visual effects to remove the practical aspects of practical effects. As in the rigging and such.

I hope and pray that this starts a trend of returning back to practical special effects

    Come on Bluestreaking :)
And the metal bikini was Carrie's idea.
Don't make me bring my long dead thread back to life: Nudity in TFA?!?!?! (Beside the wookies) lol

Episode VI gave rise to my first fantasies before I even knew what those were, and I used to claim I liked episode VI for the "ewoks" haha

Oh god I just got flashbacks of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, a true product of "everything must be CGI!"

    Lol

And there was no Leia "slave outfit" back in 1983. When I was playing with my brother and friends back then, it was Hoth Leia in Jabba's playset.

i saw someone wiggling the stick attached to the back of bb8 with r2d2 scene in the making film footage so those things had to be taken out with cg i guess.

things like rigging, relfections (in people's eyes), original lighting, background noise etc. that sort of stuff. Or for example Unkar's face is digital, but first they have to digitally remove the prosthetics.
