Hi guys, huge fan of Star Wars here. This is the first time I've signed up for any kind of Star Wars forums because of the number of questions and nostalgia TFA left for me. First of let me start by saying I enjoyed the movie and was mildly surprised that Disney managed to pull it off after my initial skepticism regarding questionable trailers.

As those who have seen the movie and know that Han dies, I'm sure some of you guys are into the Expanded Universe. After reading some of the short novels particularly about Jacen Solo and Ben Skywalker etc... I went in there (the cinema) assuming that the originals could not die (not aware that the cannon brand was removed from EU in 2014). Obviously the movies have precedent over the EU, but what do you guys feel about the way that the EU was disregarded almost entirely, with a lot of the works that were produced rendered null.

Right now I kind of see the EU as almost an alternative time line, kind of similar to superhero comic books. But I feel for some of the authors who may potentially lose out on revenue because of Disney wanting to create their own brand merchandise for the future of Star Wars. Do you think that perhaps Disney could've mixed in some of EU lore ?

I think Disney had a choice: to allow the Expanded Universe to become canon, which limits their story, or creating their own expanded universe. While I find it unfortunate that all this information was essentially tossed out, from the perspective of Disney, it makes perfect sense that they want control and build their own world, their own characters, etc.

Agreed from Disney's perspective it was necessary and a good call, but I was kind of hoping that they would mix in some of the EU rather than discarding all of it.

I thought they did well to capture the overall vision of the Expanded Universe. I would argue that while Kylo Ren was not taken directly from the Expanded Universe, his character was inspired by Jacen Solo. We also see female leads, which have become prevalent in the Expanded Universe. Whether or not there are more Skywalker or Solo children remains to be seen. Luke could be going Yoda out on that island, or he could be doing a lot more. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw other nods to the Expanded Universe, but I don't expect them to borrow heavily from it.
