welcome to the Switzerland of Star Wars threads!

we've decided to try a little experiment to see what a truly polite playground might look like.

to that end, The Rules for this thread are as follows:
    • no neutral or negative ratings are permitted,
    • no generalizations are permitted (use "i", not "we" or "everyone" or "all Plaguesites", etc.),
    • everyone is allowed to discuss anything they want so long as it's about Star Wars and doesn't attack another poster (directly or indirectly), or break any of the forum rules.
yes, this thread will be more closely moderated. the point of the experiment is to provide a space for voices that have not had a chance to engage due to overheated disagreements. if you break any of the above rules, your ratings and posts will be edited or, if necessary, removed. please do not post in this thread for the express purpose of baiting, trolling, or derailing.

we're all here because we want to discuss our views with others within the fandom and i think most everyone wants that discussion to be respectful. this is your chance to put the best parts of the fandom on full display: not because we agree with one another about everything, but because we are all passionate about Star Wars.

    ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~

just to kick us off, i'm going to throw this out there as a topic (but feel free to post about whatever you want):

i very strongly dislike broom boi in TLJ. i may even flat out hate him.

i get what Johnson was doing there and maybe it would've worked in context of another film, but not for the middle sequel of the trilogy as i feel it lent a strange finality to TLJ that didn't set well at the end of the story we'd just been given. oddly enough, i think i could have tolerated it better as an end-credit scene rather than tacked on after Crait as it was. : o p

    Interesting point about Broomy.

I'd say I agree. His symbolism is hard to mistake at this point, but it just felt like his inclusion was awkward. In a movie as big as the last Jedi, and with characters like Luke Skywalker and General Organa (not to even mention the new cast) giving a random kid the final scene felt awkward.

I think the message of "hope" could've been more effectively conveyed. Maybe we could've seen Rey on the Falcon fielding a communication with one of Leia's no-show allies, with them pledging to support the Rebellion. I guess it wouldn't have featured the Force as much, so wouldn't be a perfect replacement for Sweeps, but I think it would've been a much better ending.

it's the only part of TLJ that i actually feel was kinda maybe self-indulgent on Johnson's part.
because you're right: we don't really need it from some random kid.

Rey left Ahch-To angry and frustrated, having written Luke off. when she acknowledges to Leia what Luke's done for them, i think that's enough.
in ix they could even expound on that to their heart's content. but i didn't like it as a send-off for what was a pretty dark ending.
in that regard it felt very cloying. : o p

I think it might have felt a little bit awkward, but at a certain extent it was the way RJ conveyed a lot of things in this movie.

For example, who would you say had the last words of this movie? Leia with "we have everything we need" or one of this Canto Bight kids speaking in non-Basic language?

Broom Boy: "I AM A PERSON AND MY NAME IS TEMIRI BLAGG!"

    Wait, wrong character! LOL

I didn't mind broom boy as much ( I may even like him) :p, but in my opinion, a big reason Ep. VIII felt a little "off" was because it was a middle episode, but really wasn't set up like a middle -- at all. I've mentioned before that TLJ felt like Episodes VIII and IX combined. And now we head into in Ep. IX which very well may result in being a huge spring board for what Ep. X-XII could become. So again, what should be the end of a "chapter" in this saga ends up as a beginning.

Overall, there is a weird flow / connectivity (or rather, disconnect) happening between these films. I think trilogies can be great, and are at least a good way to group the SW films -- but for the first time, this third trilogy (so far) just isn't feeling like a trilogy. Instead it's just 3 sequels, back to back to back. It may be a little unfair to say this before we have Ep. IX to complete the set, but that's my feelings right now.

Haha, I can never remember his name, thanks for clarifying. At least I didn't call him Pablo, too. :p

For real though, that name might be one of the main reasons I don't want the kid as a protagonist in a future movie. Maybe I'm being unfairly shallow, but I think "Blagg" sounds really ugly.

That's true. I'm curious to see what IX brings. Maybe the decisions made in TLJ will pay off, with IX being able to break the formula a little more.

right? i want to end it with Leia.
    that, for me resonates.
and i also just like Carrie Fisher having the last line. : o (

    BWHAHahahaha ~ that's awful.
i can't decide if i agree with this. like you said, it's hard to judge without the ending to know where it's going and how things may end up tying together. for now i do feel the aesthetic shift deeply. much as i love all the red and Crait, TFA just felt more grounded to me (maybe literally since we didn't have any real space battles in it?).

    EXACTLY!

*sheds a tear while listening to Princess Leia's theme*

I think it is interesting how Rian left a lot of things ambiguous like what I just mentioned. It's like "I have a bad feeling about this": it is there, but it isn't there as it has been on previous movies (this time said by a droid).

At least he didn't ask Rose: "ARE YOU AN ANGEL?" bwahahahahaha.

I love most things Star Wars.

I grew up with the OT which to me are perfect, I love the story of the PT although there was a lot I didn't enjoy mainly to George Lucas's over the top attitude towards the execution of these films.

Rogue one was a hit and I really enjoyed TFA, it was great return and breathed new life into Star Wars, TLJ was the biggest disappointment for me which I'll admit left me feeling deflated for a while but with Solo just around the corner my excitement in Star Wars back!

I've not read many of the books but I did think Shadows of the Empire was amazing!

I have a confession. After years of moaning about the Phantom Menace, and thinking Jar Jar Binks was a disaster, I've come to love Qui-Gon, appreciate the story, and think Jar Jar Binks is ok. I've embraced the Jar Jar, or the humor of it. I still don't like he stepped in poo and I'll never call the first one, Episode IV whatever George Lucas renamed it or acknowledge that Jabba the Hutt was ever in it except for a deleted scene kicking and screaming that Han shot First. I still like that it's part of me. And secretly admit that some of the changes to the Sequel Trilogy made sense. The only thing that bothered me about Temari was that he was the last shot of that movie. It was the first time ever that a Star Wars movie ended, and that includes Rogue One, without a Skywalker in the last scene. I know that meant something, and it will take time, but I'll bend to that as well.

I saw the Holiday Special in 1978 on a black and white tv and it was all the kids could talk about in school. Ewoks forever.

I, personally, love B(room) B(oy) & Co. because that scene for me was always about Luke and what his sacrifice meant for the galaxy. I mean, those kids are literally SW fans playing with action figures and reenacting (legendary) scenes. It showed that the hope expanded beyond Millennium Falcon and a handful of Resistance fighters, a couple of droids and a Jedi-in-training.

I do love Star Wars though I decided a long time ago that not all of it will be for me and that is all right. I take what I like from the things that are not for me (for example, The Clone Wars in the case of prequels), take them to my personal SW world and move on.

I am happy that I am one of the people who like or outright love this new era of Star Wars. It is fascinating to watch SW world grow and expand and I hope to see much more in my lifetime. :)

I agree. For me TLJ felt like a finale. I hope EPIX will bring some connectivity. JJ needs to tie everyting together.

Before TLJ was released I thought (or hoped) TLJ would end with Kylo standing in front of a huge banner of the First Order, then he would look up into the night sky (kinda similar to Broom Boi ) of Mustafar. => Vader's castle is now in possession of the FO. #SomeoneCanDream

But what do I think about Star Wars? I obviously love it. But I don't love everthing. I like to pick and choose. There are things I like and things I dislike about Star Wars.

when you say "over the top attitude" what do mean?
and do you think the PT has aged well?
i saw parts of it last summer and was kind of shocked at how glossy and "painted" it looked.
cgi has come so far since then.

i agree with you about Temari ~ a lot of what rankles me is just the placement of it. i don't mind the sentiment of it. it just feels like it's in the wrong place.

p.s. i'm pretty sure my brothers and i were traumatized by the holiday special. though afterwards i really wanted a stuffed Bantha and my brother became obsessed with Boba Fett, so it wasn't all bad. XD
i think it's a great time to be a fan. i'm glad i came back to it, warts and all.
exactly. like what in the world is that Freemaker series all about anyway? hahahaha

My first contact with Star Wars was Episode I. I don't know if it has happened to any of you when you watch a movie, and you don't walk away of it but if someone asks you later what was the movie about you have no idea, like you were not paying attention at all? Well, those were the prequels for me (at least Episode I in VHS and Episode III in the movie theatre). Watching the OT was totally the opposite for me.

I love most of Star Wars. Even the movies I don't really like too much (TPM or AOTC) I am able to enjoy, because of what it adds to the Star Wars universe. I love ROTS, the Original Trilogy, and, for the most part, TFA and TLJ. I liked Rogue One and am excited for the future of standalone Star Wars films.

The Clone Wars is probably my favorite TV series of all time and is one of my favorite things to come out of Star Wars ever. (I also quite like the original Clone Wars miniseries from 2003-2005.) Rebels is something that I twist and turn on. I'm not too invested in a lot of characters, the formula is often too repetitive, and it feels overly kid-friendly sometimes; but it adds a lot to the Star Wars universe, has its fair share of great episodes and scenes, and does have some great new characters, as well as memorable appearances of returning ones.

I like a lot of the books and comics, even if I think that quite a few tend to be fall more on the average side of the good-bad scale. I don't really care about the distinction between Canon and Legends. In fact, I'm reading Path of Destruction for the first time now and it's really good so far. (Might even be one of my favorite Star Wars books yet!)

If anything, I think the worst thing about Star Wars tends to be the online community. I've said this, or similar things to this, before, but there are few places on the web where Star Wars is still fun anymore. However, the internet gives a megaphone to the toxic haters, trolls, and immature "fans", so it's probably not as bad as it seems and the Cantina is pretty good. Plus, from what I've heard, the interaction with people in real life, like at-at conventions is pretty good!

So yeah, that's what I think about Star Wars! :D

    ...

On the topic of Broom Boi, I agree he and that scene was out of place, but I like the message that it was trying to communicate. I don't know if a post-credits scene would've been much better, but still, that scene is put at an awkward spot in the movie. Maybe they should've just cut it and saved it for the novelization instead?

I feel kind of neutral about Broomboi. I understand why RJ put him there and why he stuck to his guns so fiercely about keeping him:
    • He cements the idea that the Force is for everyone, not just specific bloodlines.
    • He emphasizes that Luke's last heroic act was inspirational (the kids reenacting with the action figures) and gave hope to the corners of the galaxy.
    • He ties the symbol of the Resistance (Rose's ring) with hope (Holdo's "the downtrodden see our symbol and find hope" speech).
    • He reminds us through the visual of Rose's ring that saving what we love is better than destroying what we hate...as we watch him suffer under his cruel master(?) and dream of a better life.
    • He represents the future!
But I do agree that its placement is odd--I'm still confused about whether this is supposed to be much later, or immediately after Crait. If immediately after, how did the kids get the legend already? (Through the Force, right? :D) And I'm not sold on the idea of no Skywalkers at the end as a break in tradition, although I guess the world isn't going to end over that. But I do wonder if there wasn't a better way to get all the above across in a different method without quite the change of the end scene?

But, like I said, I'm okay with it. I love the John Williams's theme for him, so there's that. ;)

I'll say though that TLJ didn't feel like a final movie to me at all. It felt like a middle movie that ends on a I-just-got-gut-punched-but-I'm-still-hopeful note, exactly like ESB. There's too much unresolved stuff with both Ben and Rey, and the future of the galaxy to iron out still!

I like most SW stuff, but there's too much for me to really consume all of it. Mostly I invest in the films and some of the books, and I dabble in other media as it interests me. :)

I'm a fan of all things, even things that I don't particularly like, I would still include those in things that I do like. I know that doesn't make much sense, but... for example, I'm not big on Rogue One as a film. It doesn't do much of anything for me, despite that, it's still Star Wars and I spent months and months debating it and talking about it, I don't do that for things that I just flat out don't like. If I went and saw a Marvel film and didn't like it, that would be the end of it. I'd shrug my shoulders, go home, maybe think about it for a day or two and then move on... but I can't bring myself to do that when it comes to Star Wars because it's such a big part of my life. I can still appreciate and admire what it does in the grand scheme even if I don't like the execution of the actual product whether it be a movie, TV show episode, comic, novel, etc.

To your point about broom boy, I'm not sure where I stand. I like his inclusion but I agree with you on not being that big on it as the final scene...

... but that segue's into something I've wanted to get off my chest for a while now but have been wary of saying.

The Last Jedi, in my opinion... is the greatest Star Wars film ever made. I'm not saying that it doesn't have flaws but the highs that it hits I think tower over the highs in the other films.

i really struggled to watch the cartoon series' (both of them!), but my desire for MOAR Star Wars finally won out against my dislike for the animation style and my loathing of the PT. now i'm glad i watched it all. i didn't love everything about the Clone Wars, but there was some really good stuff (adventures with Anakin and Obi-Wan, a better-developed relationship between Anakin and Padme, and i loved Satine). Rebels has turned out to be a great show too, and i love how it's tying all the stories together now.

Ezra Bridger. because it's art and therefore it means something (as Sabine says).

the novelization and a deleted scene. how's that? hahahaha
my sister totally and emphatically agrees with you! : D
i have yet to decide where it falls in my own scale.
