If and when Disney ever decides to release the OT on Blu Ray here are a few things that I would like to see:

    1. The original films! NO special editions!
    2. The films in their original forms but Blu Ray quality and sound.
    3. Each film sold separately and with it's own special features that include documentaries and special features relating to the particular film. I say this because I feel like we get ripped off with special features and bonuses with the box sets...just feels cheap.
    4. New and updated commentary from the OT cast.
    5. Cool vintage looking cover/disc art. The current Blu Ray sets are very much cheap looking and lacking in this department. The vintage look is the way to go!

    What do you guys think?

This is a great opportunity for Disney to win the hearts and minds of many fans. I think they would be insane not to find a way to make this happen.

Is GL still preventing the theatrical releases from being released on DVD or does he have control over that anymore?

It seems to be more of an issue with 20th Century Fox. I don't think GL has much say anymore on the matter.

That's right. I knew that. Just slipped the ole mind. Fox has the distribution rights so really I think Disney has no control over releasing a bluray.

Thumbs up from me on that idea! There's plenty of room (and demand) for both versions of the OT on Blu Ray, and now that the decision doesn't rest solely with George Lucas (if he retains any say in the matter at all) I think that we will probably see some sort of OT original edit release on Blu Ray within the next few years.

I agree about selling the films separately, and with their own bonus features. Forcing purchase of a box set in order to get deleted scenes and so forth is a pretty damned cheesy way to make a buck (especially when the last time around you had to buy the full six-film box set if you wanted to get the outtakes and other extras.)

Honestly, I don't see any way that Disney doesn't do this. They know it's in demand from the life long fans. Plus think of it like this, we are the ones who will be raising the next generation of SW fans and introducing them to the movies. I just wish that when I had introduced the OT to my son he didn't have to see a CGI Hayden Christensen at the end of ROTJ...

Disney could pay the OT original edit release with the change in the couch in the lobby of Iger's office - and that includes whatever payout Fox would demand for use of ANH.

The demand is there, and the financial backing is there. I'm with you, I don't see how this wouldn't happen.

I agree. Odds are likely that it'll be a big seller, at least enough to warrant profit, considering all of us who already have the blu-rays would probably jump at the chance to buy them again only with the premise of the unedited-OT being part of it.

Honestly all I want from any new Blu-Ray release is a score only track for all 6 films. I'll live with SE changes and forced box sets for the rest of my life in exchange for being able to watch the films without dialogue or sound effects. Just John Williams' genius set to Lucas's images. That's all I need.

    - The original versions of the OT properly restored.
    - The 1997 SEs for the people who grew up with them and want to see them again.
    - The 2004 versions with proper color grading.
    - TPM without heavy DVNR.
    - AOTC with proper color grading.
    - All of the deleted scenes for every film
    - Options for all of the different audio mixes - ANH had five different mixes even before the SEs.
    - Better audio mixes for the '04 versions.

I don't own blu-ray so I don't even know if this is possible, but what I would love to see is a "build your own trilogy" option where you can pick from the various editions what you want played in the movie. You could mix&match versions and even be able to add in the deleted scenes to your customized version. Basically it would work like a fan-edit on the fly.

Or they could have 3 discs for each movie...1 for the original theatrical release...1 for special edition...and 1 for the special editions with remaster deleted scenes added in.

You could, and that's how I pictured this future release happening when I started my CGI/Boba thread. There would be Disney's 'canon' edition on one and the original on the other. The 2006 limited edition came sort of that way.. w/o xtras and remaster though..

Just to throw this into the mix, but a request I would have is for better optimization of the menus, and the disc itself if that makes sense.

I say that simply because the box editions of the blu-ray always seem to take ages to load...realistically let's say 20 to 30 seconds longer than you'd expect any other blu-ray to load. It often feels like minutes (and could be - never actually timed it) from my experience on three or four different devices. To top it off, once you're there the menus themselves are cumbersome in layout and generally slow in response... that is after the menu does its little initial animation thing and actually lets you start interacting.

That's an interesting though, but I think it might be too difficult to implement. Plus at some point the novelty would wear off and we'd end up just throwing the disc in and watching the default version.

I could swear though that I had a movie or two that allowed you to watch it with the deleted scenes inserted. I can't remember which, but it was a nice feature, even if it sometimes messed with the pacing a little.

I created my own version of ANH doing exactly that, using the OOT bonus disc version of the movie for the video track. I'm not the best video editor, but it was fairly easy to do with the trilogy soundtrack - the only edits I needed to make were to the scene where the Sandpeople mount their Banthas (there seems to be an extra few beats of that frantic bongo) and the Cantina Band #2 track (there's a repeated bar not on the CD) with a few crafty cut and pastes. I even threw in the little echo-y foreshadowing of the first Cantina Band track heard as Luke and co walk up to the entrance from the mono mix of the movie - that being the version I grew up with.
Harmy's Despecialized version has an isolated score track as well, but I've never got round to listening to it so I don't know if those tiny edits were made to match it exactly with what is heard in the movie.

    As for my checklist...
Aside from the obvious - remastered versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy - I'd like to see every single inch of SW footage lying there in the LucasFilm archives rather than any new documentaries or commentaries. Get it all out there, every last bit. I'd happily shell out for 20-disc versions of each movie for all that unseen stuff. :)
