We can't let the fact that many dislike the PT be used so that we can say that Lucas made bad ideas on the PT because I grew up with the OT and there were many things at that time that were also concidered bad ideas. Many fans at that time were bummed at the fact that Luke ended up being Leia's brother since many of them prefered him over han. Having Han use Luke's lightsaber on the Taun Taun and then having Yoda say there was another hope made many fans get there hopes up that the new hope would be Han and some even thought of Lando! It was a downer for many of the fans to find out it was Leia as they would have prefered Han and for that it was considered a bad idea as well. People also though it was stupid to let Leia be able to choke Jabba with that little chain. And though I rarely defend him I will on this one, how many fans haven't felt it was a HORRIBLE idea to have Boba Fett die in the dorky way that he did? Last thing I will mention that people thought was a dumb idea was having Luke throw away his lightsaber in front of Sheev (sorry guys but that name is so funny I just had to try it once myself) What logic was there for Luke, who was facing an enemy he knew nothing about but that was well aware that he was more powerful than Vader, take his weapon and throw it away? What did luke think Palps was going to do? Cry, admit defeat and let him walk away? Or was he thinking he would only use harsh words? All these things were considered bad ideas at that time so it really doesn't have to do if it was that the prequels were bad but it does have to do with what our concept of a bad idea really is.
Now don't get me wrong, I for one also think that some things could have been done better in the prequels and I'm with you 100% in thinking that it was a horrible idea to make Anakin a little kid in PM but all the movies are going to have one thing or another that we are not going to like and we are going to call it a bad idea and this time on JJ or Disney's part. I'm really pumped by the words of JJ that he's going to include Jar Jar's bones in the movie and I think that is an AWESOME idea yet I asure you that somewhere, in some dark corner of our world, in some remote hidden place, there are going to be Jar Jar lovers crawling out of their holes and saying that killing Jar Jar and placing his bones on Jakku was a bad idea.

I don't think it would be a good idea to have Obi-Wan be the father. However I wish they would've had him in a love triangle with Anakin and Padme. It would add so much to Anakin's turn. Would certainly bring home his feelings about how the Jedi are evil and he doesn't trust them. Maybe when Padme is pregnant he truly wouldn't know who the father is and maybe tell Luke he is without even knowing himself. Only through revelation by way of the force would he know. It would also be a great way to show why the Jedi aren't allowed to love. Jealousy, anger, mistrust, hatred, etc. Not to mention all the other stuff that contributed to his turn on top of that. Would've made a lot more sense than what actually happened.

Hadn't noticed this thread before, fascinating speculation.

Let's see...OMG...Ben Kenobi even said so (slip of a tongue) when he encountered Luke on Tatooine for what must have been their first time:

    Exhibit A:

BEN Rest easy, son, you've had a busy day. You're fortunate you're still in one piece.

BEN Quickly, son... they're on the move.

And now this line makes perfect sense:

    Exhibit B:

BEN I have something here for you. Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldn't allow it. He feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on some damned-fool idealistic crusade like your father did.

Why doesn't he just say "He feared you might follow me" but instead talks about himself in the third person? Apparently, instead of saying "I wanted you to have this" talking about himself in the third person enabled him to conceal the truth that he was Luke's father.

    Exhibit C:

The official Return of the Jedi novelization / 1981 screenplay makes it crystal clear that Owen Lars was Ben's brother!

    Exhibit D:

It's undisputed canon that Bail Antilles was Leia's foster father. Now, for some reason he must have had instructed her which person she should contact in the time of desperate need and who might be the perfect person if not her real father, who would have (and did) responded to her call?

    Exhibit E:

There are noteworthy parallels between the Luke Skywalker character and the Arthur character in the Knights of the Round Table Saga (e.g. Excalibur).

Uther Pendragon used Merlin's Magic to pretend to be somebody else when he made love to Arthur's mother (i.e. Arthur's and Luke's - ? - mother were mislead about the true identity of the father of their children).

And Uther (Ben) stuck Excalibur into the stone until it would be retrieved by Arthur (Luke) when he was old enough...!

The circle is now complete! ;-)

P.S. I can now vividly imagine what happened following the Force ghost scene in ROJ. They all smile at Luke who is happy and content. Luke gets distracted by Leia, winks an eye saying "be seeing you, guys".

The moment he looks away Anakin gives Ben a severe punch...

Old Ben as Luke's father CONFIRMED! ;)

One thing I love about Star Wars is how (perhaps unintentionally) ambiguous certain things were that allowed both GL and us to speculate away as to all sorts of permutations of what twists in the story there could be. I am looking forward to seeing JJ's version, which I hope will have similar potential...

Sorry to dig this up, but with the recent interview with Mark being presented the lightsaber that he used in ROTJ, and him revealing that it is also the actual one used by Alec in ANH, though painted a little differently...my brain started working...

Palpatine : Ah, yes, a Jedi's weapon, much like your father's. ( I think he knew Obi wan was the actual father, so he quickly realizes the slip of the tongue and adds) By now you must know that your father can never be turned from the dark side. So will it be with you.

I think Palpatine recognized the 100% identical similarities between Luke and Obi Wan's light sabers and misspoke... Maybe.. That scene never made and sense because the lightsaber Luke has resembles nothing that Anakin or Vader for that matter ever wielded.

If that was true Obi-Wan could still be alive and that would mean that Vader's child is still out their and could be Lorsantekka.

What if Shmi lied and WATTO is ANAKIN'S father!

Interesting trivia: To keep the Vader reveal a secret during ESB production, the actors were given bogus dialogue that did reveal O.B. as Luke’s father.

Really interesting idea, and would make for a great fan fic at least. I think some cool things could be done with this, but I think some of the knee-jerk responses from fans on here shows that this probably wouldn't be well received across the board.

A fanfic material? Sure, why not. Official canon? Not really. It would be like saying that the whole story after Episode III was Anakin's vision of what he would have done if he hadn't turned to the Dark Side. Skywalker family is one of symbols of modern culture (at least its first two generations) and should be left alone.

    Agreed, for the most part.

Of course, if it was done, I'd have to reserve my judgment for later- maybe something cool could be done with that neither you or I can currently come up with.

In all fairness, ever since ROTJ (and maybe even including it), none of Star Wars has been well received across the board. There are always some that are unhappy with how the story continues to unfold...
