What if Luke killed Rey's mother - his wife - for some reason?

Discussion in 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' started by Ammianus Marcellinus, Nov 2, 2017.

?

Too much emphasis on her father, let's go theorize Rey's mother

If I'd be Rey and discover something like this in a vision, I'd be pissed. :)

i think Luke or the New Republic might be liable in some fashion for the loss of Rey's family, but i don't think they're related.

I can not believe Luke can turn in to a murderer.

I mean murderer of good ones.

Ok maybe his wife was very evil person, in whch case Luke's life truly would be rapsody of faliures and tragedy.

I don't think Luke killed anyone. He was out searching and on his own personal mission. But he may have came across her parents on

Jakku in the new book"Legends of Luke Skywalker." If the person telling about that story is telling the truth about seeing him there.

He sort of already is - he blew up a Death Star full of people.
The point being, if he continued to go after the Empire post-ROTJ then he would've likely killed people that had a family...

When you really think about it, this is really the only thing that could turn Rey away from the light/resistance/Jedi.

it's maybe not the only thing, but it is the strongest/most potent thing perhaps in terms of the narrative.

True, I'm prone to the odd bout of hyperbole now and then! :p
But I guess my point is that if Luke is her dad (or the Solo's) and the pull to the dark is because she blames them for her life, I don't think that'll be strong enough. Not only is Rey a hopeful person anyway but really, will it be their fault? Highly unlikely. And so her history can be resolved quite quickly.

It could be that she is just mad at Kylo Ren for killing her dad, if she is a Solo (she's not), but again, he'll be her brother and her mum will still be around, albeit for a little while :(.

I think though if she discovers that Luke/the Resistance are behind her parent's death and her being subsequently ditched on Jakku, well you can see how that would create major conflict! (And also push Luke to make it up to her and become a surrogate father).

It's Mara Jade, and Luke killed her because he turned against her.

Jokes aside though, I really can't see them having Luke kill his own wife and the mother of his daughter. It's not... very Disney.

It's an interesting idea but boy, if they ever went in a direction like that, they better have all their bases covered first.

Don't just do it for the sake of a shock plot twist, that's character assassination (literally and figuratively).

I don’t think that this is actually as outlandish as it seems, and it could play out in a few interesting ways. Just tossing some ideas around:

Luke and Ben are off learning about the history of the Jedi. Luke becomes stronger than he could have imagined, simply in his pursuit of knowledge. He accidentally and unintentionally kills his wife as he becomes too powerful for his own good (he could have been training Ben or become angry for some reason, and literally explodes a Temple).

As a result, he hides Rey from himself — he could even get Ben or someone else to do this (note: the Force awakens in Rey in TFA; she would not have the Force at this point). This fractures his relationship with Ben greatly, for obvious reasons, and this is when Snoke really furthers his attempts to seduce Ben.

Luke, thinking that this immense power came as a result of him being the only major proponent of the Force in the galaxy, attempts to restart the Jedi Order so that the Force isn’t just potentially channeling through himself. Ben learns about his grandfather being Vader, as hinted in Bloodline, and finally gives himself up to Snoke, who tells him to destroy Luke’s Jedi Order.

With his wife dead, his daughter missing from his life, weaker relationships than ever with his sister, Han and Chewie, and now, with his nephew having turned against him, Luke gives up. He can’t even muster the strength to challenge Ben.

Giving a fragment of a map to Lor San Tekka which depicts the route Luke will take in his search for answers at the first Jedi Temple, Luke leaves on his journey, a broken man. A man who wants nothing to do with the galaxy, let alone its battles.

So if the force literally awakens in Rey during TFA as apposed to metaphorically (meaning she had no connection to it prior) then something had to have caused it. Maybe Luke was responsible. We know he has been seeking old knowledge and secrets of the force since ROTJ. Perhaps he discovered something that subsequently allowed him to do this and Rey's connection to the force was the result.

As for why Rey? Maybe he does have some prior connection to her we haven't yet seen, not necessarily familial but some other event or situation. Which is why he maybe chose her? Almost used her like a metaphorical guinea pig, or by giving her this 'gift' he felt he was redeeming himself for previously wronging her in some way. It could also be argues that he didn't choose her per se, maybe the force did. I dunno but several scenarios are possible.

It would also lend some context to the look of surprise/curiosity/sorrow on his face when they meet. He knows he was responsible. It could also invite conflict between the two, she refused her call to adventure in TFA and seems to have no desire to be part of the conflict. If she finds out Luke is responsible and his motives, then that could turn her against him. It would also give symmetry to her and Kylo Ren as they were both manipulated Into the positions they find themselves. Its very thin... Again lol but its possible.

It could also work in reverse I suppose, maybe Luke was responsible for sealing or breaking her connection to the force (similar to Revan) when she was a child and subsequently dumped her on jakku. If she was a student from a very young age she could have been made to believe that the others at Luke's academy were her family. He maybe felt her level of potential power, was scared by it and took action to prevent future consequences. Could be a connection to the line in the trailer 'Ive seen this power only once before. It didn't scare me enough then, it does now' maybe he feels he should have taken more drastic measures.

    Its definitely worth pondering lol.

Do you really believe that? Some things are a point of view but I think the spirit of Star Wars is that there are some things which are truly good or evil.

This I agree with. But just because they think they're doing good doesn't actually make it so. And it doesn't justify evil behavior.

I just wanted to spark some discussion since you brought it up. The original context was that if Luke actually killed Rey's mother, there's a big difference between whether he murdered a good woman or "killed" an evil person. I'm certain they would never go the route of having Luke kill an innocent person in cold blood.

what if she was collateral loss? it's possible to blow up a whole Death Star and kill potentially hundreds or thousands of possible innocents: the garbage guy, that young perky secretary, some nurse in the sick bay. it's convenient to call them "evil" because they were Imperial, but were they really evil? did they do evil things?

Haha, now we're getting into some tough ethical questions. We could go the philosophical route, but maybe we should just let the movie Clerks answer this one...
