we do have a timeline. He turned the Republic into an Empire 12 years after taking control.

Before that we see the Republic not working (TPM) and under Palpatines control be continuing in the manner it did befor he took over (AotC), until he turns it into the Empire, and we see the results in the OT.

The PT's is about a Republic becoming an Empire, Lucas said examples througout history where this happened (like Rome) were the inspiration. What I'm suggesting isn't a dramatic change. The Republic at the end of ST doesn't get an Emperor,t hey don't set out to harm people, they don't get taken over by evil people. etc

He actually did it DURING ROTS but we don't have a timeline for how long it took from Order 66 to announcing the empire

No, more "road to hell is paved with good intentions" rather then "Evil takes over"

Its a more nuanced view of things, you might have trouble with it.

I feel that if Snoke plays his cards right she will be in Kylo's place. Think about it. Ill post a vid. on it but if she is related to someone on the Darkside(Palpatine) Snoke could say Luke killed them, probably making her infuriated. Look at top to see the video.

Don't worry, I don't think you're stupid or naive or any such thing. I think Rey turning would be a very interesting twist to the story but I try not to get my hopes up about these things due to the political nature of her character.

Now, as to how this would affect the plot? I see it going one of two ways:
    1. Trading Places: Rey turns to the dark side while Kylo turns to the light. This would likely result in Ben bringing Rey back to the light after her brief foray into the dark side. I'm not too big a fan of this particular route as Rey probably wouldn't do anything particularly evil, I doubt the writers would let her before she is quickly redeemed, so she would lack the actual villainous atmosphere that Kylo can give us.
    2. Reluctant Apprentice: Rey becomes Kylo's apprentice while not fully embracing the dark side but gradually being convinced by Kylo as time goes on, perhaps he aims to overthrow Snoke and he convinces Rey that if she helps him then it will be to the benefit of the galaxy. All while Rey's judgement is clouded by the temptation of the dark side but she still hesitates from committing full blown evil acts. Her redemption could then come about through a climatic duel with Finn who she would either wound or perhaps kill (if they wanted to go dark) before repenting in her grief.
I think she will be tempted by the Dark side in the same way that Luke was in the OT but I don't think it will go any further than that which is a shame. I agree with you in that there won't any tension in the story but that seems to be Rey's defining trait because she's not a character she's a role model.

what is wrong being a role model? Why is it so attractive to have good people go bad and do evil deeds?

There's nothing wrong with being a role model it just has a tendency to make a story stale or tensionless and the character flat. Even that isn't quite a satisfactory answer. It really depends on the type of role model we're talking about and how much it defines their character.

Let's take Luke from the OT. Now naturally Luke is meant to be a character for people to emulate not so much in terms of strength and abilities but his moral goodness: his loyalty to his friends, his bravery and his strong sense of duty. After all for the majority of the OT Luke is not the most capable of heroes, not that he is incompetent or anything like that but he certainly isn't a power house which is why it is all the more satisfying in ROTJ when he has come into his own. More importantly it wasn't of vital importance that Luke appear infallible or strong, his story of boy growing into a man was more important. Perhaps because Luke was just one of a long line of male heroes so there was less importance in creating a strong male character, Luke was less ideologically loaded so to speak.

With Rey it's too early to say for sure but generally she is more ideologically loaded. It's more important that she appear strong and infallible as she is a female hero so with this particular type of role model the story becomes subservient to the goal of creating a strong female character (strong in terms of ability not writing or characterisation). This isn't guaranteed by any means but everything we've heard through KK or others is that it is very important that Rey is role model for young girls.

Kylo Ren, maybe. The FO, no way. Why would she care about their insane crusade? The FO has nothing to offer to her. Kylo Ren on the other hand is the only one who would be willing to teach her about the force as it is, not just the light side.

Maybe Luke will kill Leia, Snoke and Kylo and go on to rule the Galaxy as the Emperor foresaw?

I proposed that Rey and Kylo could 'switch jerseys' in TLJ in a thread early last year. I also made it clear in the same thread that LFL didn't have the guts to go this route.

Look, they killed off a Assajj Ventress in a book. Aside from Governor Price and Seventh Sister we have not seen a female star wars villian be utilized by the new regime outside of the pulp. I'm ignoring captain Phasma because she is currently a cardboard cutout with a Microsoft voice. Sorry, that's what she is so far. Hopefully we'll get something in TLJ. And let's not forget that Phasma was female only because the role was "gender-neutral" and the fan base went ape$#!& after the release of the "sausage party" photo.
Maybe it's ideological; maybe they just want to play it safe.. but they currently just as disinclined as George Lucas to presenting a female villian.

I can't think of anything that would ruin the ST for me more quickly and more thoroughly than Rey falling to the Dark Side and Kylo being redeemed. It would just seem utterly rediculous and unbelievable to me to have both of those things happen in the space of one trilogy. Have Rey be tempted by the dark side, sure, and have her mind all twisted and confused, but not turn. Have Kylo become more and more of a true bad guy with each movie until he is like Vader at the end if IX. Save the redemption for the next trilogy, or have him die evil. Not everyone of Skywalker blood needs to die a good guy.

I personally don't believe she'll fall to the dark side, but it sounds interesting. Her falling to the Dark and Kylo being redeemed intriguing.

It's something I thought about. Not so much TFO but the dark side.
