As stated, what is your favorite battle that is featured in the films for the two trilogies (Episodes I to VI)? And why?

I've put links for each down below. For my vote, I'm going with Hoth, for the sheer thrill of the ground assault, the first time we see the AT-ATs, and the awesomeness that is the Imperial Snowtrooper.

Note: I've only included the relatively large-scale battles involving two opposing military/security forces that sees at least enough screen-time for us to get a good enough glimpse. Thus, smaller operations like that on Tantive IV are not included, as well as other battles we hardly see (Mygeeto, etc.). Note that some battles only really see land combat, some only really see space combat, and some both.

    No lightsaber duels.

If a similar thread has been done before, I apologize and simply state I didn't notice it when looking. And if a mod could edit the title to include the "Poll" tag, that'd be great. For some reason I only have the options of "Humor" and "(No prefix)".

Have you ever played Battlefront II? It's awesome to jump into a snowtrooper and run around shooting rebels. There's also a "more realistic" mod version that shows how long that trek would've been just for the walkers.

Yavin. It may not have the scope of some of the broader battles, but from a film appreciation standpoint it is the best edited, the most impactful, and the most climactic. Hoth is great and more expansive in its scope and variety, but as it takes place at the beginning of the film, it lacks the punch that Yavin has. Endor’s focus is really around the lightsaber duel. The battle itself is important, but secondary as part of the climax of the movie. The prequel battles? The RotS ones are short, and I have numerous issues with Naboo and Genosis. And not a single one of the other battles has anything that rivals the moment where the Falcon shows up out of nowhere and blasts Vader into space. For that moment alone, I give it to Yavin.

No, I have not, but I'd love to get a copy. What sort of platform do you need to play it? Could I run it on my PC like I do with Empire at War?

Oh yes, there is indeed a PC version (the one I play). It's older, from 2006 I think, so it'd be easy enough to find and I don't think the requirements are particularly demanding.

Good points. I do agree with Endor's focus (in the focus of the film at least) being more for the duel. Kind of makes me wonder what could have happened had Vader still turned good, killed the Emperor, and survived. Would he have been able to take command and call a ceasefire? Still, by that point the Alliance was gaining the upper-hand, to some extent.

I agree with you on the prequel battles. They generally were short to the extent only a brief glimpse is given. I feel TCW gave a better treatment to the battles... well, not necessarily a realistic treatment (given the audience and aim), but better in displaying the length of battles/sieges, the emotional and physical toll on the combatants and bystanders, as well as some semblance of tactics.

I prefer the battle between the jedi & the battle droids of Geonosis that was a classic.

I picked RotJ in the survey for its scope and the impacts of the outcome. My favorite saber battle is the Darth Maul one on Naboo, because it did blow my mind the first time I saw it, and made up for dealing with Jar Jar.

Yavin battle, my favorite action sequences are the ones with space combat and The Battle of Yavin had the longest display of that. It was also the battle that i was the most emotionally invested in.

Ahhh...that's a hard one.I'm torn between Hoth and Endor. Hoth has the lead, though.
My favorite lightsaber battle is Bespin. The Maul vs Obiwan and Qui-Gon was pretty epic in Phantom Menace as well.

Looks like the tide is going Hoth's way, which happens to be my favorite as well. (at-at)

Hoth, hands down. I bought shadows of the Empire on the Nintendo 64 again a couple years ago just for that. It can't fly in space, but the t-47 is one of my favorite ships.

The battle of coruscant could have been better with some more periphery dogfighting (maybe other jedi helping out?)

The battle of endor was cool, too, with its three-pronged fight, though to be honest, it's always about the jedi duel and the a - wing smashing into the super star destroyer.

Yavin was cool, but the least "star wars" of all the films. Good dogfighting though.

The battle of naboo had two good parts...the duel of fates, and the naboo ships...minus anakin...lol. I hate the parts with the gungan and padme running around like a special forces op.

Leaves geonosis... it is, to be honest, the most bad ass, yet biggest letdown. The jedi fight in the arena was cool to see, but paced so... lifelessly. Not Sure if that is it, or what. I just guess I thought that if we were going f to see multiple jedi fight and die in a movie, it would mean more. The jedi seem like props, less like characters.

Visually, it's a bad ass scene with a lot going on.

The Hoth portion of Shadows of the Empire was indeed pretty awesome at the time. It was leaps and bounds above the version in Super Empire Strikes Back (SNES). Also still one of my favorite vanilla maps for Battlefront II.

Coruscant I feel was really visually exciting, and would've been epic had it been explored more from the side-fighting like you mentioned.

Endor was indeed largely about the father-son confrontation, but still... as far as the OT goes, it was the most epic space battle. Still holds up to the PT as well.

For me, Yavin is good but just a bit small. It's just an assault and was really limited in its scope.

Naboo was boring, speaking personally. It looked neat, and it was certainly exciting seeing the troop transports land and then menacingly set up the droids... but after that it was a bit of a snooze-fest against the Gungans. The space battle was pretty cool, but far too brief.

Geonosis I like, but more for the after-arena fighting with the clone troopers in full force. Not perfectly done, but visually stunning to seem the two sides going at it in all the dust.

Battle of Hoth with Battle of Yavin close second.

I notice there is similiarities in these battles that put them above and beyond the others.

What these battles do better then others is build tension. The prequel and ROTJ battles rely on humor and cutesy intercuts that take away from the battle. I notice in these two battles we have rebels with faces and names (or at least call signs). They are given lines and chance to recognize them as individuals. Which each rebel we are reminded of the bleakness and danger of the battle. We fear for our heroes because everything is going wrong and allies are dying left and right. Most fans can name half a dozen characters that were part of the battles but were not major characters whose lives were very much at stake Wedge, Biggs Red Leader, Dutch, Porkins (who doesn't love Porkins!), Janson, Dex, Dak, Zev, Hobbie taking part in these battles and many lossing their lives for the rebel cause. Plus, in Battle of Hoth we have some imperial officers like Piett and Veers who have hints of character.

The prequels lose this with literal clones. It wouldn't be so bad if they had given a couple of clones individual features. The Battle of Coruscant is visually cool but empty. The battles in the prequels are just background for the mains to have individual little battles. Heck, even non-major jedi are just extras without lines.

Actually, The Battle of Endor is pretty awesome when edited just for the space battle scenes.

I'm glad too. The whole "Empire dies with the Emperor" thing was a bit too fantasy-like, though I think that's what Lucas was going for anyways. Empires usually don't just stop existing, but rather need time to crumble away.
