My vote goes to the space battle above Endor. I'm a sucker for good dogfights.

    I couldn't agree more.

For me, the Battle of Yavin is Star Wars. Desperate Rebels flying these tiny little starfighters against a planet-killing, near-impregnable battle station the size of a moon. Multiple waves of fighters making attack runs on a nearly impossible target, while being picked off one by one by ground fire and enemy fighters. And then by the time Han and Chewie fly out of the sun to blast Vader off of Luke's tail, the tension has the audience right on the edge of their seats... the classic popcorn movie viewing position.

And of course, John Williams' brilliant score for the Death Star attack builds tension equally along with what we see onscreen.

The Battle of Hoth was really the only other battle scene in the entire saga that was set up that way, and since the Rebel loss there is inevitable, that scene builds a different kind of tension. Still, though, it's right up there with the Death Star attack from ANH.

You make a very good point about the fact that the pilots in both of those scenes aren't just faceless, nameless cannon fodder. To me, that was a big part of what set these battles apart from those of the rest of the saga. Endor, Naboo, Coruscant... lots of visual spectacle there, but there was never any real connection to most of the pilots in those. Plus, the Endor and Naboo battles were fragmented and truncated by the constant cutaways to other scenes. Hoth had considerably less of that, and Yavin... well, that was just a pure, undiluted hit of starfighter action that no Star Wars movie since then has even come close to, IMHO.

Honestly, I hope that the X-Wings over the lake shot. Is the beginning of a Hoth like battle.

The Battle of Endor. It boggles me that they made that in the early '80s.Simply stunning.

Hoth. All the reasons already stated before, especially Vader closing in on the crew and them barely getting away. Oh, and that scene with Dak feeling like he could take on the empire himself! Fool! lol

Battle of Hoth is the best for me. (wampa) The combination of AT AT's (at-at), AT ST's (at-st), Snowtroopers, and Rebel Snow Speeders was awesome. Battle of Endor would be second for me. What I would have enjoyed seeing in the Battle of Endor was a few less Ewoks (ewok)and more of a role played by the Rebel Commandos.

I really liked the battle of Coruscant. Everthing was in that battle including the kitchen sink (literally) You also got the feeling that the Jedi cared for their own troops.

Agreed. I don't love the ground battle of Endor, but the space stuff is good enough on its own to stand out as my favorite.

Yavin, in my favorite SW movie of all time. Hands down.

However, this might have been a more difficult choice if you expanded the list to include Scarif in R1.....

Nothing beats Battle of Coruscant. Still the best space battle I've ever seen. A fantastic way to start a movie as well. Nothing says Star Wars better than this.

Out of the ones in the list - Yavin all the way. One of the greatest achievements in editing in history of cinema. The Battle of Crait also gets a special mention - that red dust is a true stroke of visual genius.
