I truly love each of the original trilogy films for their own reasons, but my favorite is definitely ESB. Even today that film seems so fresh, Vader seemed his most menacing, all the locations were original, that Yoda was Frank Oz's best work, the Hoth battle was so cool, and the asteroid chase was just as cool, and of course Boba Fett was a second bad guy that many fans loved as much as Vader. There are oh so many reasons to love ESB the most.

But everyone please vote and say why you voted that way.

Honestly, I know its unpopular to say I like all the movies but if forced to choose I'd say TESB is the best and my favorite of them all. In fact, it is the closest we have to being a perfect movie.

I go back and forth between ESB and ANH quite a bit.
A new hope is perfect in its simplicity. Its streamlined, and fast paced, and has almost no issues.

But, ESB tries to do so much more in building the world and the drama of the trilogy. It went dark with the cliffhanger ending in a time where that just wasn't done. It built the mold for the modern trilogy in the same way ANH hope built the mold for the modern blockbuster. But in the end, I give the edge to ESB for its ambition and scope over the more streamlined but flawless ANH.

I can never decide between Star Wars & Empire, because they are both great movies in different ways. Star Wars is great because it still works as a standalone movie that had a beginning, middle and ending, and you can watch it in that context. Empire is great because it takes everything great about Star Wars, and then goes deeper into the story and each character and doesn't stop for 2 hours. If I had to choose between the two I would say that Empire is the better made movie (only because Kersh got better performances), but not by much.

I love all these movies so much, but my favorite movie of all time is the Empire Strikes Back. It gets so close to the characters which I happen to think was Irvin Kershner's touch. It's hard to say that because the original trilogy as a whole is just amazing. But I really think Empire captures the essence of the galaxy from the battle on hoth to the epic conclusion

Gotta go with Empire. Although, A New Hope is fantastic in it's own way. It's actually weird because despite the fact that they share characters and and themes, ESB and ANH are just entirely different movies. Comparing them is difficult. Empire is probably my favourite movie of all time regardless of it being a Star Wars movie. Echo-07 said it just right. I think it's just about perfect. Then again, there's nothing I would change about A New Hope that would make it better. Empire just has a depth and scope that outclasses it. But I love the original Star Wars because I can show it to someone who's never seen a Star Wars movie (they do exist), who has preconceptions about the lore and the complexity of the universe that fans hype up and just completely neutralize that worry that they won't get it. A New Hope stands alone as a fantastic space adventure movie that anyone can enjoy and that makes it a close second. Return is also great, but it just doesn't develop the characters the way ESB does even though I think the battles in that movie are my favourite.

I think Star Wars A New Hope is the best of all the films so far. It had a full, complete story that could stand alone on its own merits. The SFX were ground-breaking and state of the art for the era(1970s).
Lucas crafted the story arc & plot so it flowed and the music/score was outstanding.
The Empire Strikes Back is "better" but it's a unfair comparison when you factor in the budget/resources and plot/story.
People rail against ROTJ too but it's okay for what it was. The third act of the films & a way to bring closure to the beloved characters.

Definitely EMPIRE. The darkness, the deepness of the characters, the battles (both big, as Hoth, and intimate as Vader & Luke's), the witty and fun love story between Han & Leia, Boba Fett, Yoda, an incredibly cool and mysterious planet as Dagobah, "I am your father", Lando, The introduction of the Emperor, and so on. Many many things make it my favourite off the OT and also, my all-time favourite in the film industry, period. (pwned)

They are all great but I'll take ep. IV any day. I love it not just as a SW fan but as a film in general.
It has impeccable pacing, very tight script, and as mentioned above its simplicity makes it stand out.
I didn't need to see the emperor to know how evil the empire was, it left a lot open to engage our imagination.

Have to agree with Empire vote:

We see Luke as a growing Jedi slaying the beast on hoth. Yet still he questions when training with Yoda as he fails in the cave. This growth to maturity we all go through as our emotions learn to take a backseat to reason. I often quote Yoda still to my boys (and only half joking).

One thing that often puzzles me though, is whether or not Luke failed when he left his training? Perhaps that's another post for another day but have to agree with Qui-GON29 the darkness and deepness of this film is powerful.

The scene after Luke has hand repaired and stands with his sister is great here too. When you think of where he came from!

The Empire Strikes Back has my vote, all the new characters introduced and too many memorable scenes made for the perfect sequel.

Well, a Jedi's life is intimately connected with the force so I don't think it's a matter of passing or failing a test.
It's an ongoing journey and persistent wrong choices can lead to the darkness.

ESB. I really thought about voting for ANH because of the overall originality, performances from Peter Cushing's Alec Guinness, and awesome editing. I still have to give to ESB though. Better writing, better direction, and better story. I tend to think ESB had better acting overall simply because the actors had a little bit better idea about what they were doing, who their characters were, and so forth.

I chose Empire...but I love all three almost equally. Empire has so much coolness though. Hoth, Jedi training, Luke getting his hand cut off and the reveal, the astroids, Vader choking people contsantly, Good Lando bad Lando Good Lando, Han and Leia's romance, Carbonite, Boba.....Dang! I need go watch this movie right now!

I seem to be the black sheep here, but my favorite is RotJ. I was first introduced to the films in the mid 90's about a year before the special edition stuff came out. I love the fight above the sarlacc pit, and I'm still a sucker for lightsaber duels and space battles. That final battle really made the movie for me. As a kid, it was all so very epic and it is still my favorite film.

That being said, the best film is definitely ESB. It's dark, well written, and really has the best emotions in the OT. The carbonite scene and the "No. I am your father" are gloriously emotional. When I was first introduced to Star Wars, I was a bit too young to really grasp the themes and appreciate the darkness of ESB, which is why RotJ is my favorite.

Well, I certainly liked ROTJ so I wouldn't argue with anyone who selects it. In that film, I absolutely loved the final Death Star battle, the speeder chase through the forest, the scene where Luke gets to see Vader face to face, Yoda's death, the golden bikini, and all the dialogue between Luke and the Emperor.

Unfortunately that film had alot that I didn't like at all. The Ewoks, Jabba's palace didn't meet the same animatronic standards of ANH's cantina scene (especially that blue elephant thing), to busy at the end with three storylines, and Boba Fett's death was comical and completely unfitting. Also the duel between Luke and Vader didn't go right. Luke totally dominated, which is unrealistic given how the ESB duel went. It should have been more even with Luke only winning at the very end.

Here's a serious question: where was Luke hiding when Vader threatened to turn his sister to the dark side? Every time I watch that scene it looks like a consistency error of some kind.

I've always felt there was something weird going on with the hiding too! I've just never put it to words. It's pretty hard to beleive Vader couldn't detect him with his Force/Helmet combo. But I think I've always thought that Vader wasn't trying that hard to win that fight, because he was doubting his motivations and slowing turning away from the Dark Side. He also didn't want to kill Luke, he wanted to kill the Emporor and start a Skywalker dynasty. That's how I make sense of it anyway.(leia)(dark)(luke)

I think the Ewoks get too much criticism - sure they were cute, but is that really such a bad thing? The Jawas were kinda cute, and R2D2 (and Han Solo - wait, wrong kind of cute). It was cool to show that these feral like tribal people could defeat the troops of a Galactic Empire just because of their barbaric ways of fighting that the Empire never had to like train them for (stormtrooper laser guns were built to fight other people with guns in the halls of a starship, not little furry things in the brush!).

Personally, I loved the aliens in Jabba's palace the rat monkey thing, Amana-man, the ork pig guards, Squid-face, and you can never forget the gross, giant, hedonistic, crime boss himself - Jabba the Hutt! The whole sequence just felt dirty and alien, especially the song part (Lapti Nek, not you know what) where it felt like a freaking strip club.

In the battle of the Sanctuary Moon of Endor, I though the transitions in tone were very well done, but maybe that's just (like) my opinion (man). And Boba Fett's death was just to bring a little comedy to a fun action sequence - a fitting end for a character who did and said very little during the few times we saw him.

In The Empire Strikes Back, Luke wasn't fully trained, and Darth Vader was just toying with him. But by this duel Luke is a Jedi knight, and they had to show Luke using anger and hatred (appearing to make him much stronger) to leave Vader helpless, so the Emperor could try and seduce him to the dark side of the Force. But then, seeing Vader lying defeated on the ground - used and cast aside by the Emperor - Luke realizes that anger and hatred really don't make you stronger.
