So what are the story questions and points that were opened in Ep7 and Ep8 that you consider must be closed in Ep9?

    For me:

Does Rey turn? Dont want this.
Does Kylo get redeemed? Want this, but not ROTJ style.
Knights of Ren - Not a big arc, but simply state they were Luke's other students that went with Kylo then use them in battle(s).
Does FO or Resistance win? Want Resistance.
Leia heroic end or ride off into the sunset.
Rebirth of the Jedi/Force users in a more populated way.

Anything else? I dont want any change to Rey's parents. Would consider that pandering and not needed. Story is better that her lineage was nothing.

Remove Rey turning (she is designed to be a role model for little girls) and add Snoke's detailed biography ( :p) and that's pretty much all there is to it.

    - "See you around, kid." => Will Luke haunt/troll Kylo Ren?
    - Will Rey rebuild the Jedi Order?
    - Will Ben Solo return?
    - What's the deal with the KOR?
    - Will Hux betray Kylo?

I'm not sure I've got any wants. If anything I suppose happy endings for everyone. That's what I would like. Other than that?

What if it was the plan all along? Misdirect the audience with a lie so when the reveal came it was a surprise? It's something that crosses my mind when I see people saying things like "don't retcon" it's like, how would we actually know something is being "retconned" (or "pandered"), or, if it is simply the original plan all along, to misdirect then reveal? How many people would be upset over what was intentionally the plan, but they assume it wasn't?

I'm fine with Rey's parents being "nobodies" or "somebodies" but if they turn out to be "somebodies" I wouldn't be able to tell you if it was the plan all along or if it was retconned.

It has to open up the universe and really mean something. Thats what makes it so not needed. Takes up a lot of screen time to do what? I also do take what JJ said after TFA opened. Rey's parents are not in TFA.

I'm not sure what you're meaning to say with this.

Yeah but he also said Khan wasn't in his second Star Trek movie. Pretty much the entire cast said that as if it were fact. But it wasn't. Why'd he do that? Misdirection. To keep something that the fans were on to a secret so there would be a surprise when it was revealed.

Also, I'm fairly sure he later stated that he didn't mean Rey's parents actually were or weren't in EVII, but that their identities weren't known in EVII. At any rate, to take his words at face value seems to me, not the best course of thought. If his past is any indicator, then his statement "not in the film" means "is in the film and I'm trying to misdirect you away from your theory so the reveal will come as a surprise."

I'm not saying that's what's going on, but there is precedent, and if it is what's going on, then I wonder how many people are going to be upset when they (mistakenly through assumption) conclude that what was planned all along was "retcon" or how many people would also mistakenly assume that JJ "retconned Rian Johnson" and start claiming that "TLJ was bad and the retconning proves it" when there is no retconning except in their mistaken hasty conclusions.

JJ is the king of misdirection, Khan, Jedi Finn, Rey Solo, he's got previous for this kind of thing. I wouldn't rule anything out in all honesty. That's the mystery box, unlike previously he gets to give his answers and to be honest at this moment am drawing blanks. I do worry about time travel though.

Means that is has to really mean something to the story. What does it accomplish to have Rey the long lost granddaughter of say Obi-Wan? What does that do for the story? Make people feel better because they feel that for someone to be powerful in the Force they need it in their DNA isnt meaningful.

Yeah but he said that before his second Star Trek movie came out. He was trying to hide a twist. This is different this was couple months after TFA came out with all the speculation. He mentioned that, Maz dialogue in TFA and Daisy Ridley comments before TLJ released all make it apparent that her parents werent the known characters that are in this trilogy (so far, and hopefully we never know).

What happens to Ben Solo/Kylo Ren.
How will Rey restart the Jedi.
Who will lead the Resistance. (We know Poe but in movie we need to know etc)

Everything else is mostly fluff that is prime for books, comics and shows; and I really only need two of the three answered in 9.

I see what you mean and I don't disagree. To me, for it to work to the fullest, it would certainly have to mean something to the story.

Yeah but "he said that before his second Star Trek movie came out" is the same as saying "he said that before the twist was revealed." A couple of months after TFA came out is still "before the twist was revealed" (if the twist exists in EIX). So it's the same scenario, only in the ST the twist he's wanting to hide is after EVII. And all the things the actors say, can't be relevant to me. They more than likely wouldn't even themselves know until the day the revelation scene was filmed. These things are hidden from actors all the time. As for Maz's dialogue, there's also Kenobi's dialogue in EIV. Points of view in Star Wars, it's not something unprecedented.

But to be honest, there's only one specific familial relationship I can think of that really would matter and change things. I'm not just thinking about any connection (like Kenobi's granddaughter because, who cares? That relationship is really no different than that of a stranger) but a very specific one. One that could've been at the heart of Ben's turn to the dark side, and one which then could bring it full circle. That familial relationship, looks all but bust to me at this point. Though I still can't rule it out because of too many unknowns in the timeline and in Ben's complete reasoning for his turn to the dark side. If it's not that then, yeah, I don't really see the point of Rey being the daughter of Boba Fett. Rey the nobody I think I like better than that. But, again, I'd have to see the story that's created, and how these things interact before being fully able to consider the reversal of "Rey McNobody-you-know" into "Rey McSomebody-you-know."

TLJ didn't leave a whole lot of mysteries still open. Snoke is dead. Rey is a nobody. And I'm fine with that. Now the most important thing for Ep IX to resolve is Ben Solo's story arch. He's the character that is keeping me the most invested in this new trilogy. JJ has to do something satisfactory for him. I am betting that he will turn to the light. Hopefully it happens differently than it did with Vader.

Considering it does not appear that the ST was planned out in any way, making Rey something other than a nobody would be retconning it. JJ was originally not doing IV so it was not a planned deception at all. If it changes in IX it is because JJ didn’t like what Rian did with her origins.

These aren't all necessarily "loose ends" as much as they are things that EP. IX has to cover.
    • The role of the Knights of Ren
    • The role of Force Ghosts (specifically Luke)
    • The role of Leia
    • Ben and Rey's complicated relationship
    • The conflict between Hux and Ben
    • Ending the individual arcs of Rey, Finn, Poe, Rose, Hux, and Ben
    • Resolving the galactic conflict between Resistance and First Order
    • Wrapping up the saga as a whole ("uniting all three trilogies") and justifying the ST's existence in the first place
Now, I've enjoyed the ST so far but I'm setting my expectations real low for EP. IX. I just don't see how it cover all of that in a satisfying and compelling way under 2 and 1/2 hours.

I don't think it has to cover Force Ghosts or Knights of Ren. Those have always been tertiary things that really only WE (people who frequent Star Wars forums) actually care about. Which is why Snoke's life story wasn't in 8.

There are so many loose ends in this trilogy. While most have been mentioned by the people in this thread, I’m shocked very few have listed these:

    1) What, exactly, is a “Ren?”
    2) What, exactly, does Kylo want?
    3) If this saga is about the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker, why is Anakin nowhere to be seen? Not even as a ghost?
    4) What, exactly, is the first order in “First Order?”
    5) Why do lightsabers “call” people only in one episode out of the total 8?
    6) What does Rey’s vision mean?

Probably because most are not really loose ends that need explaining.

    It's like a 'Sith'.

The same thing as Darth Vader

Because the saga isn't about Anakin Skywalker. Only the first six parts of the saga are about Anakin Skywalker. It's never been said that the whole saga is about Anakin Skywalker. The sequel trilogy isn't about him, and was never going to be. If you want something, you could say his legacy prevails, and is present in the eyes of his grandchild.

It doesn't really matter. It's just a sufficiently fascistic sounding name for the bad guys. Calling themselves the 'second' of anything makes them sound second rate, and who wants that? (and they can't be called the 'new' order because it's too real-world fascism - 'first' in this context is just synonymous with 'new').

They don't. Just this one lightsaber did. Because 'magic' and 'the force'. Or for the same reason dark side caves 'call' to people. Also because it's a new story and a new situation. There was no 'set up' for that happening in earlier films. Why does everything have to have been seen and happened before for it to happen now? There has to be a first time for everything. If it had happened before, would we be waiting for an explanation?
    --- Double Post Merged, Sep 2, 2018, Original Post Date: Sep 2, 2018 ---
The Force Awakens showed us that already. During his first combat mission he's traumatized when a fellow stormtrooper dies in front of him, he sees the horror of the First Order and decides he doesn't want to fight for them any more. Her pretty much says that. Where's the loose end?

He is (or was) the supreme leader of the First Order. We know that already.

We know this already. She's commander of the stormtroopers, and Finn's nemesis. There is no more to know. It's not a loose end.

I don't think anybody cares or is asking that question. Why is that a loose end?

JJ said it's a title like Darth. The Knights of Ren are a cult. Every member has the additional name of Ren.

"It's time to let old things die. Snoke, Skywalker, the Jedi, the Sith, the Rebels. Let it all die."
=> He wants to create something new. Furthermore it seems like that he doesn't really care about the light or the dark side. He wants to go a new way.

Anakin's legacy lives within Kylo Ren. But I think Anakin will appear in IX.

It's about his leagcy which still has consequences on the galaxy. It's about his curse which will be broken in IX.

I think this was mentioned in one of the books, but I can't recall it anymore. If you look at it logically, then it should be pretty obvious what it means. The FO wants order first. This means they will do everything to establish order in the galaxy, "then we can have peace".

First of all: new stories, new things. Furthermore we never had this calling before because all the main characters in the previous movies built their own lightsabers.

Which vision are you referring to? The one of TFA or the one TLJ?
The one of TFA shows her the path of the lightsaber, but also her own past but also her future.

My list may sound a bit repetitive, but here goes:

    1. Closure between Luke and Rey/ Luke and Kylo
    2. How the Knights of Ren fit into all this i.e. the flashback , which in my opinion is one of the more intriguing scenes in the trilogy so far
    3. How will the conflict between the Rebellion and First Order end
    4. Redemption or no redemption for Ben
    5. The role of Leia
    6. More about Rey's background/importance and not necessarily parentage.
    7. Development of Finn, Rey, Poe
    8. Honourable way to end the Skywalker Saga
