Empire had the best drama, the least amount of cheesiness, the most spiritual insight, and Vader was at his most ruthless, bad ass self (only exception being the last 2 minutes of Rogue One).

I like TESB "best" for many reasons already outlined - particularly character development, dialogue, and score. I also get the impression that those most visible in the production were performing with confidence and in good form.

FWIW I still find many aspects PT and ST films enjoyable to watch (especially with younger audiences) but I think it is very high praise for TESB (or any film for that matter) that it still stands up so well to a critical eye after much time has passed since its release.

Of course first seeing TESB while young and influential will certainly factor into some serious biases of mine that later films may not have the benefit to share!

Like others have mentioned, it can't be discounted that TESB resonates so effectively with fans because it also stands on the shoulders of characters and themes intorduced in ANH.

The fact that movie sequels are sometimes so poorly executed is testament that it's success might be more difficult to accomplish than appearances may lead us to believe!

From my point of view, the Return of the Jedi is the best. I know most fans think its the worst but I can't see why they would say that. Now, I've got nothing against ESB. Its just my least favorite out of the OT

"The Empire Strikes Back" isn't the best. Anyone's answer would be based upon preference, not fact. So, there is no "best".

That's true, because none of the movies can objectively be the "best" or "worst." I think a better phrasing would be "What makes TESB your favorite."

"The truths we cling to depend greatly on our point of view."

So the question would be "what makes it the best in your opinion?"

As the OP explained it's generally considered the best by a large number of fans and that shows itself in polls and the like. Agree or not (as the OP disagrees), it does have that reputation. It has become pop culture shorthand for awesome sequel. Obviously not everybody is going to agree and the OP was just wondering what is the cause of that. I personally agree, it's not just my favorite Star Wars movie but my favorite movie of all time. I'm not sure I have anything to add as the replies have covered just about anything I would have said and then some.

    Leia wearing no underwear. Seriously.

Edit: I'm sorry that's A New Hope. I meant Chewie, wearing no underwear.

Okay, that makes sense. I personally agree with it being the best, but not everybody agrees with that, so it's a little more subjective. It's just a title, nothing more! :)

I think there's a very big difference between best and favorite.
Best should be objective, favorite should be subjective.

The Godfather and The Godfather 2 are not my favorite films.
But they might be the best films ever made.

You can't get too objective when discussing art though, art is subjective as they say.

To a degree but there are also set standards of "good" and "bad"
Being able to recognize this outside of "favorites" is important.

Just finished listening to the Blu-ray exclusive commentary. Quite a lot in there that I didn't know - like Peter Mayhew collapsing from heat exhaustion from wearing the Wookie suit and his replacement not being able to walk like Peter (well, that's knock-knees for you) so they had to wait until Peter had recovered before recommencing Chewie's scenes. Of course, as always, there's Anthony Daniels being his usual bitchy self but thankfully his contribution to these commentaries is minimal. Much more rewarding is hearing Alec Guinness talking of his respect and admiration for George Lucas or hearing Irvin Kershner talk with such passion about the film (even though there must have been a point in his life where he got fed up answering questions about it).

Jedi is my favourite out of the original six films (unless it's a Tuesday, when my favourite is Sith) but I can fully appreciate the reasons why there are fans who think Empire is the best. It's just a personal thing; I prefer happy endings and I don't think any film comes close to Jedi when it comes to happy-ever-after.

Incidentally, I read recently that Peter Mayhew considers Empire to be "mediocre". Although, to be fair, I don't think Peter Mayhew is playing with a full deck.

Of course not, they'd have to admit they're fairly pointless people.

This is wrong. Not only do art critics provide us with different perspective on different pieces but also we needv to remember that they need to know art, understand it, study it. They not only give us a different perspective but also they give an educated one. One may tell "story is ineffective" but the critic would state, in detail, the reason why why we find it boring. A work of a critic isn't just meant to give us a reccomendation on what to see in a cinema on Saturday morning, it is adressed to people who want to deepen their understanding of a particular art form. Critique of a work can help a creator understand what his or her work lacks and how he or she can improve it. Of course, a person who's not specialized in the field of art criticism can be a competent critic with enough experience but it's way more difficult to get it than people imagine it to be. It's like with natural sciences. On surface everything looks to be quite simple but in order to truly be competent in a specific field you need months, if not years of studying.
