SPECULATION What must The Rise of Skywalker do for you? [POLL AND DISCUSSION]

I want them to go really deep into Kylo, Rey, and Luke's past... how they're all connected in this story. Let's see more of "the flashback"

If Michael Bay could direct Episode 9:
"Episode 9 has a new alien bad-guy who can shoot lightsabers out of his eyes... we'll call him Cyclops."

 

Episode IX MUST MAKE REY LUKE'S DAUGHTER!

Fan Fic incoming....

Luke had a relationship with Dosmit Raeh, the female fighter pilot who's helmet Rey wore on Jakku. Rey will find a hologram message to her from her mother in TROS. (Think Galen Urso to Jyn)

"My dear baby girl...yada yada yada, your dad is a famous Jedi and Rebel leader, yada yada yada, he didn't know I was pregnant, yada yada yada, I knew I would be captured so I left you with some Jakku villagers, yada yada yada".

Then Luke's ghost shows up (think Ben showing up in ROTJ) and tells her how the villagers sold her to Unkar Plutt. He tells her he loved her mother but he had a duty to re-start training Jedi. When he found out she died, it was the beginning of him resenting the Jedi. Once he lost Ben, he was done. Now she needs to finish the fight.

 

I had a whole thing written out but I realized it only comes down to one thing for me - IX needs to connect the PT and the OT to this trilogy without backtracking on what happened in TLJ. Anakin needs to be relevant, the force ghosts need to make their final stand, and there needs to be an ending to Kylos story that isn't a mirror of Darth Vader.

Basically, I want this movie to make its own statement about what the meaning of star wars is, amd nor devolve into a nostalgia fest.

 

Obi-Wan was more powerful....or you might say...MORE INFLUENTIAL, than Vader could imagine. Had Obi-Wan not spoke to Luke during the trench run, Luke would have used that stupid targeting computer (that even Wedge knew couldn't hit the exhaust port) and would have never trusted the Force.

I always thought Obi-Wan or Yoda would speak to Luke more during pivotal moments but sadly we've never seen that again. I'm hoping we hear Luke speak to Rey and Ben a lot during TROS.

 

I voted for everything... but I'll just want something adds value to the character development and universe world building.

 

I'm just going to try and sit back and enjoy the film with my family and friends, but I'm still piecing together what I want out of this film or else I'll go into it with a negative mindset...

Things that this film "must" do for me...

1. More Knights of Ren. I think TROS should pull an Infinity War and make the KoR the de-facto protagonists of the story. All of our main characters are fleshed out and have gone on their character development journeys. Introducing the KoR in the final part of the trilogy and making them feel threatening is a humongous task. But if we focus on their fights, thoughts, and struggles (how do they feel about burning the Jedi Order? What do they think about Rey restarting it? Do they actually trust Kylo or are they just afraid he'll kill them if they don't do what he says?) throughout the movie, maybe we can gain a nuanced villain group out of it.

2. No more Kylo and Rey. I'm done. I'm sick of it and their relationship (which frankly to me felt far more forced than anything). Kylo has nothing to teach Rey; Rey has nothing to gain from talking to Kylo. Let Kylo's arc be about being the Supreme Leader and Rey's about stopping Palpatine. If they intersect, let them do so as people working on a mission together, and leave it at that.

3. A scene between Kylo and Poe. These two have the most fascinating parallels, and the movies seem determined to NOT show them off. Who would win in a dogfight? The prodigal son and the one who actually inherits the legacy - there's conflict in there.

4. More Rey and Leia I guess? Their relationship is nice, but unless the two are related it doesn't make too much sense to me. Does Leia see herself in Rey? Does she see her brother in Rey? Why be so warm to a girl you literally refer to as "the girl?" I like them interacting, but I feel like we're missing a step that we're never going to be shown..

5. More Kenobi or Yoda.

6. MORE PT STUFF.

 

i just want something with epic sweeping drama: epic space battle, epic ground battle, epic character interaction.
and epic snogging. i don't even care who does it.

yeah, at this point i'm very much in the "go big or go home, LFL" camp.
no more safe choices, no more restraint, no more teases, mysteries, or ambiguities.

p.s. also, don't just kill everybody, JJ Abrams. please and thank you. XD

 

In no particular order:

-Anakin. Come on. Anakin talking to Kylo is absolutely necessary at this point.

-Prequel Trilogy references. Another must.

-Knights of Ren. JJ has a big problem here. They shouldn't feel rushed nor disposable.

-EPICITY. Look at Avengers: Endgame. It ties Phase 1 and 2 together beautifully. Look at the third act. It's not even the end but it feels like the end. Look at Return of the King. Why can't we have something like that in the best franchise ever?

-Force Ghosts and MASSIVE Battles. Yeah, yeah. It's about Kylo and Rey. Fans who love this trilogy just want to see them fight. But to accomplish the epicity I mentioned before, Rey vs Kylo (See: The Force Awakens) or Rey & Kylo vs Knights (See: The Last Jedi) is not enough.

Maybe Rey & Kylo vs Knights while Luke, Yoda, Anakin & Obi Wan vs Emperor while massive Rebellion vs First Order space and ground battle?

-Fix the Build Up Problem. AKA Game of Thrones' Season 8 syndrome. JJ needs to tie everything and it seems like there was not enough build up in TFA and TLJ as they feel disjointed.

-State of the Galaxy. I mean, if they don't care about the non-Rebellion/FO planets and characters, then the fight won't have any stakes.

-Careful with introducing a lot of new characters and planets. Again, JJ has to tie not only the sequel trilogy but the whole saga and spend more time in developing Rey, Kylo, Finn, Poe, Rose, Hux, Lando, Knights of Ren and so on, yet he continues introducing new characters which is something that has already caused problems in the past (Phasma, Snoke being wasted/underdeveloped or Rose adding a unnecessary subplot).

Also, we have 2/3 hours to tie everything and they decide to waste time by adding another deset planet when we already have 2 major ones that could be brought back for the same purpose. I hope they know what they're doing.

 

I would like to see callbacks to the Prequel Trilogy, specifically Anakin's force ghost in some form in Episode IX. I think it would be a missed opportunity not to have him there, especially after everything his grandson has gone through.

I would also like to see Yoda and Obi-Wan force ghosts, but they wouldn't be as essential for me as Anakin is. Because this saga started with Anakin's story so it should end with his interaction with Ben Solo.

 

I don't have anything in mind that must happen. I'd rather go in with an open mind and see what all the people who have worked so hard have put together just to entertain us.

I can think of things I don't want to happen. I wouldn't want it to be an opera.

 

My biggest ask for Episode IX: Re-unite the fanbase to like it was before TLJ. I hate how ever since TLJ there are two main factions of SW fans and they both have an intense "with us or against us" mentality. :-( Honestly takes most of the fun out of SW for me. And I don't give a flying womp rat who "started it;" it's time to get over it and come back together.

 

It was kind of divided before the sequels, with OT and PT

 

TFA already split the fanbase. The PT split the fanbase. Even ROTJ split the fanbase. But you shouldn't look at the fans' opinions anyways. If you like the movie, then it's great. If the majority of the fans like it too, then it's even better. But people will always have different opinions. So asking for a movie to reunite everyone is just unrealistic.

 

Even ESB split the fan base back in the day. It wasn't until the late 80s/early 90s that ESB received wide spread recognition as a master piece. What's different now is that grown-butted men (mostly) have unlimited opportunity to spread their self-important butt hurt and construe it as factual truth, thereby championing campaigns of nastines & harassment because of a movie they didn't like.

But we've been down that road å billion times already, so perhaps it's enough now...

For RoS, I want a cool and emotionally powerful movie that impresses me with story, excitenent, and grandure. Furthermore, if there was ever an SW movie meant for callbacks and easter eggs from earlier servings, RoS is IT! Give me gungans & ewoks & clones & tauntauns, and potent flashbacks imbued with saga-spanning relevance!

But most of all, give meg ❤ Leia ❤

Well, I must admit I was glad to see the 4 categories I picked are also leading the votes

After the disappointments of TLJ, I just mainly wanna walk out of this one saying, “OK, that’s better” and feeling like the saga has been given a proper send-off

I tend to love anything Star Wars (since 1977), no matter what... so I’m not too hard to please, TBH

That’s alittle misleading as I remember 1980. First off, there was no SW fanbase in 1980 like it is now. The masses loved SW’77 so the diehard fanbase did not take hold of the franchise until ESB, which leads to my point.

TLJ split the fanbase among diehard fans (as shown in this forum), some loved it and some hated it. I’m not going to debate the % because it’s impossible to tell.

ESB split the fandom among diehards and casual fans. ESB essentially created diehard fans for life like me in 1980 who wanted more movies in a GFFA. ESB turned off what essentially turned into the casual fan who ended up loving only SW’77. My older brother is a prime example as he loves the original and never cared about a SW movie after he saw ESB. He thought the Vader revelation was ridiculous and contradicted the original and thought the movie was too serious and not as fun as the Original. To this day, he still loves the original and never cared about the franchise after 1980, where ESB solidified me as a lifelong fan.

That’s a much different split than TLJ where you diehard fans like all of us debating Luke’s character, Leia Flying, Snoke, etc as we are arguing from a Saga perspective. I never argue with casual fans I know at world or friends, only diehards regarding TLJ. My older brother and I split from ESB in 1980 was more about I wanted more stories and he felt the Original was a perfect standalone story that didn’t need a sequel.

 

I'm tempted to vote for something in the list just to see, out of interest, the results of what people would like to see.
But actually there is nothing I want to see more or at all, just make a good movie. I would prefer to have Kylo return to the light and survive reunited with Leia.
But if it is well done, I hopefully wouldn't care if it doesn't end that way.

 

I completely agree with this. Whatever direction you take, LFL, please take it with conviction and do not compromise.

And indeed I also support some proper snogging, but nothing too awks ie. Rose and Finn... Come on JJ, you have good romantic sense. Make a girl swoon
