With Rian Johnson writing and directing Episode 8 and making a story treatment for Episode 9 what new things could he bring to Star Wars? He himself has said he will do something with Episode 8 that has never been done before in Star Wars which makes me think:
A.) he will not make the mistake that J.J Abrams did and essentially do a rehash of Episode V
B.) potentially add new stuff that we have never seen in the SW Universe such as time travel (see Looper) or new force concepts (Grey Jedi, new force aspects), etc.

I do not believe 8 will be a rehash of 5, J.J was for the most part able to get away with it for TFA, Johnson and Trevorrow won't have that luxury nor do I think he will even attempt to do that, I am actually looking forward to Episode 8 more than I did for TFA because I love Rian Johnson as a director.

What do you guys think he'll add to the SW Universe if any? Will he make Ep. 8 a rehash/reboot of Ep. 5?

I don't think so, time travel doesn't really seem like something Star Wars would take on. Plus it seems they're about moving the story forward as much as possible with the new characters, places, etc. I don't mind the idea of flashbacks but time travel in Star Wars should be a no go. But there should be a anthology movie where future Jedi have to go back in time to TPM to kill Jar Jar before he can ruin the galaxy or something of the sort.

I think that JJ brought everyone back into Star Wars with VII, so he had to play it safe... it worked, so now Rian can kinda do whatever he wants. And I expect it to mirror V only in so far that it is darker and more dramatically intense than its predecessor.
The biggest thing that I think we'll be introduced to is furthering the mythology of the Force Visions, we've obviously seen them before, but with Rey I for some reason think that we'll be diving full on into them during her training with Luke.

I feel as though there will be parallels to ESB as far as tone and structure but I think it will largely have new material and some new concepts. I'm really hoping for an old-school samurai movie vibe mixed with a WWII drama with tons of aerial dogfights.

I really wan't to see something that equals or bests the carbonite chamber. That was truly creepy, powerful, and original. I would love to see a mandalorian squad. A bad a## FO general Thrawn type. A bada## female dark side user. I would love a tragic ending where Rey perhaps goes to the dark side of the force but maybe because she is forced into it to save her friends and has no choice. I wan't to see really cool planets and species that we haven't seen before. I would love to see some skillful, respected and feared TIE pilots. I wan't to see the Knights of Ren in action using their various weapons. I wan't to see "The Hammer" that was rumored for VII. And definitely wan't to see some new resistance battle cruisers.

Rian Johnson will probably create something so new we wont be able to imagine it, but yes new ships for both sides, and plot twists we dont imagine are a must..

If it mirrors V it will fail and the franchise will fail, Disney knows that and that is why i believe they took Johnson as writer/director because they know he can create something new.

VII got away with it in terms of mirroing IV AND VI but this one will need to be fresh, they know it,

Besides do you really believe that these people havent read the critics???? they know what failed last time (as little as it may have been) but they know they got away with it and that fans are going to be extra demanding with the story plot and with the mirror story, KK and JJ and Johnson are not dumb they know what they need to do to push this franchise forward.

Im not for this, i hope they end it in EP XI but they will probably do an EP X at least. and for that they need to keep this thing interesting new and A GRADE AMAZING

i understand what j.j. abrams and larry kasdan were going for, but TFA paralleled ANH way too much in my opinion. the NEW characters, planets, ideas, conflicts, relationships, etc. made the film excellent. i really hope they don't mirror the entire OT the way that TFA did.. i want something brand new and i want it to be awesome. bring on the weird!

Though I too want to see awesome new aliens, ships and planets, what I would love to see even more is some of the same old things that make the movies seam together smoothly. TFA had non of those famous background aliens we have come to love like Rodians, Quarren, Nikto's or Ithorians and we loss all Y-Wings, B-Wings, A-Wings, Tie Interceptors and Republic ships as well. To me at least, this made TFA seem more like a reboot (yes I know it's not one) than a sequel as all 6 SW movies followed a patern that TFA just dummped. I would greatly love for Rian Johnson to take some of the hardly used creatures and other things from the past movies and toys and integrate them along with the new things he can come up with.

Imagine seeing such cool things like the Vehicle Maintenance Energizer being used on ships or seeing real movie versions of the mini rigs vehicles like the CAP-2 or the MLC-3 in action! I would also love to see some of the harly used aliens pop up as well. Guys like Amanaman, Cane Adiss, Nabrun Leids, Dice Ibegon and Leesub Sirln were all one hit wonders and it would be awesome to see more of them or at least others from their same species. Having guys like Bossk, Zuckuss, Embo or Durge appear even if they are just background characters would also be a great thing as well.

I REALLY want to see a scene where a fully trained Kylo Ren battles the rest of the Knights of Ren...and *almost* loses. Maybe the final task by Snoke to prove himself worthy?

Also I would love to see Luke do some crazy powerful sh*t with the Force.

I think he will bring the backstory/future envision in fold like in Looper but keep the style of SW. J.J. brought the action scene/open ended movie.

May the force be with you always...

Agree is not a remake but Starkiller was the worst of it (really annoying). I hope we are not waiting for a new GalaxyKiller for next film. I think Ryan will delve with the characters as ESB did comparing to IV. I expect kind of Finn Rey Poe triangle and I wish the training scenes will be original and not just a remake of Yoda. I would like Luke different than Yoda.

I wonder this love triangle: Rey and Poe do not interact in TFA at all, so there is very little that would hint (romantic) relationship between these two. I could see it in a way that Poe has feelings towards Finn, and Finn towards Rey...If Disney was brave enough to embrace a homosexual relationship in their franchise. I doubt it. They have too much money invested in it, and the topic is still way too controversial in many countries.

And to be honest, I do not wish to see Rey in a relationship with either one. What's wrong with a intersexual friendships? Can't a girl and a boy just be friends? Luke never had any relationships in the movies (unless you count the slightly incestuous kisses between him and Leia as such.), and no one has ever complained about it. But my hope (and expectation) would be to see a lot of character development. I especially wish to see this happen to Finn. After another viewing, I felt that there is a lot of room for this in his character. But the same applies to all introduced characters: Poe, Rey, Hux, Phasma and Kylo. So, most likely this.

Regarding Luke, I suspect that Luke will be very different from the person he was in RoTJ and that bringing him back to the game will be more complicated than just Rey popping up in Ach-too and asking him to help Leia and the Resistance. Of course, this depends on where we start the movie... but something in the set-up calls for a scene convincing Luke to come back instead of jumping directly two years ahead where he has joined the Resistance and the fight against the evil First Order.

    Time travel please no.

I am expecting lots of major battle footage. I would like to see more aliens contribute to the plot. So many humans I would love to see more aliens. Maz was great but short lived show us that Phasma is a Chiss, give us more than humans contribute.

    Interesting it all!
As you say, I don't think Disney is brave enough to go with the homosexual relationship in Star Wars (for instance, the second largest market, China, wouldn't allow the movie to come out there). Sex friends, why not? Or like Finn falling in love and Rey not having time for him (the opposite man-woman cliché), that could be very cool.

I'm really wondering what will be the role of Luke in VIII, because Luke has been a character that evolved 100% in the OT (IV whiner, V whiner to warrior, VI warrior to monk).

Bruce Willis. He could bring Bruce Willis.

Seriously though I'm expecting some serious exploration of the mysticism of the force. Luke has been studying at the first Jedi temple, Snoke is an old dark sider, they are both wise and powerful and have students to teach. I think Rian Johnson is just the director to pull that off.
