You know, you're exactly right on that most likely.

I'd probably just update the CGI, but keep the story intact as it is GL's vision.

I disagree about Chewie's backstory, since SOLO covered it, to a degree. I get where you are coming from, though, since GL originally was going to have ROTJ have Wookies instead of Ewoks.

Also, keep in mind that the entire reason that GL did not start with the PT or the ST was due to budgetary constraints of the time as well as the lack of VFX needed. It would have been way too expensive.

Personally, I would have simply switched the Ewoks for the Wookies without explaining anything. I think that a part of the reason why the OT works is because nothing really needs to be explained.

Well... "my" Chewie backstory it is directly related to Luke story-arc-.
In my fanfiction Chewbacca kills his father in order to protect his people (this is why he was exiled). Luke's final decision not to kill his father is hugely important in Lucas' film (it's why Luke is the ultimate hero). However is not really a surprise, during all ROTJ Luke motivation and mission seems to be saving his father. While I thought will be more interesting if Luke was convinced that in order to save the Galaxy he had to kill his own father, and then he decides not to.
