Comedy in series is alright if it is done well. After all, in 2000AD's Slaine, Ukko the dwarf serves as a handy companion and occasional punchbag for the titular Celtic hero and his humour serves to bring levity to otherwise bleak and grim moments in the story.

Just to make it interesting, I would have Anakin Skywalker, Jedi Knight suffer his injuries before turning. Show him with non menacing armor and life support. Then he turns later, fights Obi Wan and gets more messed up and is "repaired" as the Vader we know.

Other than that, I guess just eliminate small things like plot lines focused on tax laws, slapstick protocol droid comedy and one itsy bitsy character named Jar Jar Binks.

My daughters have now seen A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and The Phantom Menace, in that order. Here are my observations:

The Phantom Menace was easily the most difficult to explain what was happening and why. Explaining the blockade was difficult. Explaining the invasion was difficult as well. Explaining the senate scenes was difficult too.

Surprisingly, the oldest (7), said she didn't like Jar Jar only a few minutes after he appeared onscreen. The others (5 and 4) didn't comment one way or another.

While they didn't state this explicitly, I don't think they understood anything the Gungans said.

The fact that Darth Vader made C-3PO was a big deal to them.

    Darth Maul was creepy.

Despite not understanding a lot of it, they wanted to see the next movie right away, without watching this one again.

I find it strange that the movie with the character geared most towards children also has the most complicated/adult plot elements (Tax laws, blockade due to tax laws, invasion due to tax laws, senate meeting about tax laws, blockade and invasion, and also votes of no confidence in leadership).

It's also strange that the childish characters would speak in a way so difficult to understand. I don't even know what some of the Gungans are saying to this day.

Attack of the Clones is next. I'll report back how it goes! I'm glad they want to watch Star Wars. I like sharing it with them and seeing their reactions. I'm trying not to influence them and just answer their questions the best I can without giving future events away.

Actually, knowing the way Lucas goes about things (from scores of BTS and interviews), I'd say that it's actually sensible that these things are there.
BECAUSE of the extremely complex and adult topics (read: boring) going on, Lucas is going to really double-down on the kid-based orientation.
You see this in all of the originals. When things are more complex, there's a higher probability that the very next thing you'll see is a droid joke.

Regarding the Gungans, I can't say for sure, but I've heard Lucas talk quite a few times about the toddler age and the few years just after where listening to adults is just babble sounds with a few parts and pieces picked up, but mostly you're grasping at the body language for what's going on and that helps you understand perhaps what the few words you pick up mean. He's somewhat fascinated at this part of life. He seems to idealize certain aspects of it.

So in a way, I think he's trying to emulate that effect. The part I'm not certain about is who the target audience was. Was it intended for little children who already have this kind of experience, or was it intended for adults to remember how this type of experience feels, or was it a bit of both?

    Not really sure.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

I also assume that the gungans' speaking, or at least Jar-Jar's, are a throwback to Donald Duck? I have nothing to base this on, but I just assume this is one of Lucas' many homages in Star Wars?

    Not sure.
The only reason I would wager against the thought is that I can't recall cartoons being a big thing to Lucas; I can recall him speaking of radio, comics, and movies, but not cartoons.

I can't say one way or the other on that, though, because the man is esoterically obscure!

I wish he would've followed through with his original plans for Jar Jar Binks/Darth Tyranus.

Jar Jar Binks was originally based on a mixture of Disney characters, mainly Goofy and Phantom Blot. So I wouldn't be surprised if Donald Duck served as inspiration as well, especially for the voice like you said!

George Lucas was definitely inspired by Disney, cartoons included!

I mean, he is responsible for quite a few different animated/cartoon projects... The Faithful Wookie, Droids, Ewoks and The Clone Wars!

Besides... cartoons are just moving comic books, so... there's that too!

I had completely forgotten about his admiration for Disney!
How silly of me; that was his whole reason for selling to them! lol

    Nice citation. :)

This! In my Headcanon Trilogy this happens: before turning fully Vader is the apprentice, then he becomes a Sith and thinks of himself rather the master. Seat or no seat

I don’t mean to be THAT guy, but tbh, Jar Jar is an amazing character and I kinda like him, but humor in star wars is great, bur, Im just going to say it, I’d rather stick to serious and amazing Star Wars. Personally, I think that the humor should prevail more in the animated shows. I still love the prequals. The prequals in no way have ruined my star wars experience.

I wished they had included more Bail on Alderaan. I a;ways thought that Alderaan would feature as main planet to add extra weight to the scene in ANH when Tarkin destroys it.

    Right?
That was one of the main things I was looking forward to back in the day. Then it never happened and I just had to shrug and walk off. Oh well.

Its funny how Alderaan is such an important planet in ANH. Well important is a strong word. Well, its where Lea was raised. And we only see it once and for a very brief moment, during ROTS. I think we will se more of Alderaan in any upcoming films or shows

I would have Hayden in all three movies we didn't technically need to see the phantom menace the PT should have been Attack of the clones the Genndy Tartakovsky clone wars show all in one live action movie called the clone wars as episode 2 and then episode 3 Revenge of the sith.

Ever since I was a kid and saw The Phantom Menace for the first time, I had one suggestion to make it better. Something I still think today.
Instead of Jake Lloyd, Lucas should have cast Haley Joel Osmont.
