Isn't it kind of weird that 30 years after the Star Wars OT some of us are worrying about the storyline & female characters might not be as kick-ass as Princess Leia? George was ahead of his time on that score, for sure. Also shows that quality matters more than quantity.

I guess I agree with everything the OP said. I would like to end up caring about Finn, Poe and Rey as much as I care for the Big 3, but that's a pretty high bar. Maybe by the third movie, though.

    1. The movie has to work with me on a dramatic level. There are scenes in the OT that still strike a chord with me emotionally even 30 years later (example Luke looking at the binary suns).

    2. I have to care about the new characters. They have me with Han, Luke & Leia, but I have to care about Rey, Finn, Poe and even Kylo Ren when I walk out of the theater.

    3. A touch of humor helps. Some of the greatest dramas on TV & the movies mixed humor and released the tension every so often.

    4. The final montage ending with just music is so key to a SW movie. The movie is the entree and that 2-3 minute ending of a SW movie like ESB where Luke/Leia watch Millennium Falcon fly away to find Han is the perfect dessert.

I hope it has an awesome FINNale too!
I like that lightsaber battles shown so far are back to just hacking at each other and none of this dancing around blast!

I want to try to go in with as open a mind as possible and just enjoy the experience. That being said, here are some minimum requirements:

    Strong story
    Strong character relationships
    Humor
    Spectacular visual effects
And a rewarding reunion of Han, Leia and Luke before one of them dies!

I would really like it if the movie can stand alone on it's own merits and not just by being a nostalgia fest. Already, even though we have seen so little of the movie and hardly know anything about the main plot, TFA has ALOT of ANH in it. We already have a cast that many of us grew up with and already the main ship designs are almost the same that we all know but I really hope that much of what we haven't seen is something fresh and new and not just a copy/paste of the OT. Already we have a new Jedi hope stuck on a desert planet, a droid carrying something really important within her, a giant super weapon, a ice planet and a forest planet, a Jedi master who has hidden himself far away cause things went wrong in the galaxy, a Skywalker turned traitor under the guidance of the main baddie, Stormtroopers torching a place because they are looking for something and if the new rumors are correct, our heros finding Han and Chewie inside a cantina. Having a few nods to the OT is one thing but going to far and trying to clone the OT for nostalgias sake is another. Already with all these things I have mentioned I think we can see everything else being fresh and new because there is a nostalgia gallore already present. I want to be surprised and I want to see new characters do new things and not just walk the footsteps of those who have come before them. That and aliens. Lots and lots of new aliens that look way better than the ones we have seen so far and a few of the classical aliens we know and love apart from Akbar and Niem Numb.

So I'm guessing your not in with having the Jedi go all shiny and sparkly when the sun hits them? :)

The opposite of episodes 1 and 2 lol

    seriously

    1. Strong storyline
    2. Interesting characters
    3. Good dialogue with some playful banter like in original trilogy and strong script
    4. Limited boring exposition and no boring politics like trade negotiations
    5. Interesting opening crawl will set the tone for the movie. Phantom opening crawl was horrible
    6. Good acting
    7. Both ground and space battles
    8. Im hoping Hamill and Von Sydow have more than 1 scene
    9. No poor CGI
    10. No Magic Kingdom logo before Title

if i watch TFA and i know that i can be a spectator of the star wars universe and really get a good sense of how big the spaces are then i will feel as if it is a total success. being able to see landscapes and explore a planet through the point of view of a spacecraft etc. i hope it works ;)

A lot of what I want has already been said. I'll love it regardless because it's Star Wars and I'm one of those fans. However to make it better it should, at a minimum, be well executed. You can take crappy dialogue and a mediocre plot and make it better than what it is because of good direction and acting. If the movie is fun and it makes me want to watch it again and again then I'm happy.

    My thoughts exactly.

I think the main problem with this movie is the 30 year gap in story time between TFA and ROTJ. That's given us fans 30+ years in Earth time to dream up what happened with the characters we know and love. We're going to have to accept that this is a new story that is someone else's creation now, and we should be open to what they have to show us and judge the movie based on its merits.

We just all need to go in the theater having hit the delete button in our minds on everything we have read about this movie so far. That will also be hard.

You know, I was grateful when the work on the sequels has been announced but I couldn't help but feel frustrated that Hammil, Ford, and Fisher were past their age to play heroes and be involved in all the action. If the sequels happened exactly within time frame of the PT we would have had perfectly aged seasoned Luke and Han who are still full of vitality and are in front of all the action.

However, now I'm of a different mindset. I like the 30+ year gap. The stories of our beloved characters were concluded at the end of ROTJ and making more movies about them would've been an exercise in nostalgia. I'm completely comfortable with the new heroes, wouldn't even mind if the original cast wasn't involved with this at all (although their presence is a welcoming sight.)

The thing is that Luke, Leia, and Han still have arcs. Luke has to rebuild the Jedi Order. Leia has to find a way to beat the First Order back and, potentially, redeem her son Kylo Ren. Han looks to have the same family issues to sort out and perhaps, given his life as a scoundrel, one great sacrifice to make.

There is still a story for these characters, and probably a little ass-kicking left for them to do. (Especially Luke.) But they are not the main point.

I hope this movie will establish interesting character that I care for and a cool background for the future of the Star Wars galaxy, so that I will be curious to see the future movies, and I also hope it will have good acting and dialogue.
I don't really care for a supercreative and complex plot, I just hope the movie will be a really good start for future movies, and this can be done with good characters and a simple but emotional story.

If it will end up being this it will be a succes to me, if it will be even better I might lose my mind xD

I want a good story that isn't predictable yet is believable within the context of the Star Wars galaxy. Cool designs and costumes and dialogue that resonates is icing on the cake. Most of all, I want a story that on a superficial level is a silly space fantasy yet it has layers of meaning and depth. Kind of like Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back. Humor, warmth, a little silliness, drama, contrasts in design and characters....

No need for obvious callbacks to the OT, no need for CGI characters, no need for a lot of lightsabering.

what i hope for... and pretty much what the trailers and marketing(both of which have been brilliant) has hinted at so far, is an epic film with real weight to it, that manages to be entertaining without feeling dumbed down.

My main fears are that it will either be a rehash of new hope, or that it will feel like the new star treks(and pretty much everything abrams has ever done) entertaining but with paper thin plot.

Mainly i just want to walk out of the cinema feeling excited....

    1. Re-watchability. So many blockbusters that have come out in the past number of years have been a 'watch once and forget' type experience for me. I don't think TFA will be this way but it could be I suppose.
    2. Humor. Not jokes every 10 minutes, or "its a trap," but a little humor lightens things up. It makes you like the characters, and makes it seem like in an odd way the characters are having fun. In turn YOU have fun watching.
    3. Quiet emotional moments(Luke twin suns, moments with Yoda, Anakin in thought before confronting Palps, etc)
