The title is pretty self-explanatory. I'm just curious whether there is any correlation between how one came to originally know Star Wars, and how they feel about TLJ. My guess is that there is little correlation between the two subjects, but who knows!

I for one first came to know Star Wars through the Original Trilogy as a kid. I still have very fond memories of the first time I saw those movies, and Luke Skywalker was my absolute hero growing up. Now that I'm fully grown and have seen The Last Jedi, I must say that I loved the movie and loved how it handled my childhood hero. I understand some feel differently. Such is life.

I seen the OT first as a kid, but out of order. I seen ROTJ first then ANH and ESB. I still love TLJ.

I've watched the original six back to back, but started with the Prequels, so in theory I've seen PT first, but I have always preferred the OT. What's my take on TLJ? After two viewings in my opinion this film feels like Star Wars, alongside the first six films and Rogue One. Also, it's definitely the best out of the Disney SW films.

I grew up with the PT. I was 9 years old when TPM came out & went to see it with my Grandma (as well as AOTC & ROTS). TPM was the first Star Wars movie I ever watched, and after watching it I decided to watch the OT. As a 9 year old kid, I found myself board with the OT (I know, I, know. Hear me out). As a kid I absolutely LOVED the PT. Going back to watch the movies as an adult, I found myself enjoying the OT much more & now enjoy it more than the PT (they're just better movies). That said, I still believe the PT gets a little too much flack.

Maybe it's because the PT served as my introduction to Star Wars. Maybe it's because of all the great memories I have watching it with my grandma. Call it nostalgia if you will. Now watching the ST, I think I feel like many of you who grew up with the OT did when the PT came out...disappointed. It just doesn't give me the same feeling that the PT did when I was watching it as a kid.

It makes me wonder if that's the problem. No Star Wars movie will recapture the magic we got from the first time we watched it as kids, but we expect it to. I would bet that most people who grew up with the PT probably like them more than fans who grew up with the OT, and people who will grow up with the ST will enjoy them more than the PT or OT. Just my 2 cents

I started with the OT in the 80's, probably I watched them in 1988 for the first time. In 1995 I bought the vhs remastered, when I was 11, I started to become a fan. Crazy fan that I almost cried in front of the TV when I first saw the teaser of TPM...hahaha

First time seeing TLJ iin the theathers was weird (same happened with TFA). Second time I realised that its.a great movie and it will get better with the time.

The OT came first, then the prequels. Of course, the bantha poodoo of the prequels were easy to identify, however as more years came to pass I was forced to realise how corrupt and bantha poodoo the original films were as well - especially Empire and Jedi.

The OT is moronic in many ways, and the prequels are pathetically dull, so it's really just the Disney era that's good.

With regard to TLJ, I consider it the greatest movie ever made - even more powerful than Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals and Alien Covenant, two Mustafaran films

I think there’s a lot to what you’re saying here. Many when watching these movies are hoping to recapture that moment of magic they experienced when first falling in love with the films. Or if not that, hoping to obtain confirmation of the stories that they built up in their heads. But nostalgia and expectation runs the risk of blinding, and making one incapable of simply respecting a film as its own thing. I was one of those who loved to hate the PT. They still aren’t my favorite movies, but I have come to appreciate them more over time and sometimes feel the desire to rewatch them (even TPM). It will probably take a few years before we truly know how we feel about the current film. For now though, I’m a happy Star Wars fan.

I saw ROTJ in theaters ( won't give away my age by saying how old I was but let's say I was young and barely started elementary school). The rest of the OT on VHS ( had seen ANH and ESB on tape before ROTJ in theaters). I put indifferent as I'm in the middle about TLJ. Liked some things hated others. I am in the minority I liked the prequel in spite of Anakins portrayal but because of Obi-Wan, Padme, Mace, Yoda, Jango. People hate AOC, That was my favorite prequel film ROTS and Phamtom in that order. So its just what you like I suppose. Not sure you will find a correlation.

I saw the OT first. Then the PT.

Then lost interest in Star Wars for a long time and only came back to them during TFA.

I loved TLJ. I really liked R1. The OT were the best for me.

Its been a jouney. I remember and reflect over my childhood through SW. That make believe dream of being a Jedi as a child.
I saw myself as a child in the last scene of TLJ. (Obvioiusly not as a slave).

Grew up with (and adored) the OT on VHS. I was too young to see TPM in theatres, but suffered through AotC and RotS... it was the first time I had left a cinema with a truly empty feeling.

TFA was an absolute thrill, and TLJ even more so.

So much nostalgia for those VHS tapes! I miss them too. This new age doesn’t know what it’s missing! (a-wing)

I saw the Original Star Wars in theaters when I was 4 years old in 1977 or early 1978. I believe the film was my first movie I saw in the theater. The originals were during my childhood, Prequels were during my mid 20s to early 30s, and now the sequels are in my 40s. I can enjoy the sequels with my 10 year-old son. I loved all the iterations. Star Wars is just fun escapism for me. I read the books and comics and watch the tv animated shows with my kid. Hell, I remember the first broadcast of the Holiday special and the ghastly Ewok Adventures tv movies. I admit I had to process my first viewing of TLJ, but I really enjoyed the movie by my second viewing. I had too many expectations o. My first viewing, that everything thing I thought was going to happened, went another way. I was in shock of Luke's fate, but I've accepted and moved on. I love Luke, he is my favorite hero, so I just hope that we will see Luke in Episode 9, especially since Carrie Fisher as Leia will not be in Episode 9. I truly hope they don't recast Leia with another actress. That would take me out of the movie. I felt that Leia passed the leadership torch to Poe at the end of TLJ. I don't know what of importance they would have Leia do for Episode 9 other than meet up with Kylo's face to face.

Born in the 2000's, watched the Original Trilogy first, than the Prequels, and absolutely loved TFA, R1 and TLJ. I feel pleased and honoured to get to see Darth Vader, Luke, Han Solo, Leia, C3PO, R2-D2, and of course, Yoda ( !! ) on the big screen as it all started on the small screen at home. :)

After hating on Star Wars for most of the time that I was growing up, I first gained interest in it with Rebels, so technically that's where I got my start. (Don't ask why I hated it, while many of my friends and classmates were busy watching TCW and building the Lego sets, I was busy being a hipster.) ;) Rebels got me hooked on Star Wars, so I saw the Original Trilogy for the first time at my cousins' house. This first viewing of the best trilogy of all time was really magical, even if it was the crappy Special Edition versions. (I saw the prequels individually all at a later date.) After that, I saw TFA and RO and really liked those two as well. Not to mention getting completely emmersed in the universe by starting to read the books and comics, playing some of the games, building the modern Lego sets, and coming here to the Cantina! Now that TLJ is here, I really enjoyed it. Sure, maybe it's not the story that we all wanted to hear after ROTJ, but it's still a really good one nonetheless.

The Original Trilogy was the first one I saw as a kid. But I had no trouble with embracing the Prequel Trilogy. I fell in love with it just as easily as I did the Original Trilogy. On the other hand, I have been very disappointed with the first two movies of Disney's Sequel Trilogy. I think both movies are crap.

I watched the OT first... ESB at a drive in and ROTJ at theaters. I remember watching ANH on TV and how I instantly got immersed in the universe (we only had a black and white TV, so I didn't even see the red and blue lightsabers lol... fond memories).

I remember watching PM in theaters 3 times, tears in my eyes at each opening crawl... I loved it, until later. I think I was just so happy to see SW back on the big screen. AotC I left crying for different reasons... only SW I didn't instantly like, and well, I gave it one chance and re-watched again and never bothered to go through that again lol.

ROTS I've only watched once. I thought it was okay but I picked up on plot whole in the theater (Leia remembers her mom etc...) which kind of disappointed me in JL. He had years to figure out how to tie everything in, all he'd have had to do is get 3-4 fanboys to make sure the continuity worked. Missed opportunity imo, but seeing Vader at the end was cool.

TFA I left happy. It ranks ahead of the PT to me, but behind all 3 OT. Kind of tied with R1. There were already elements that i didn't like (Han's blind shot, Han using Chewies bowcaster for the first time, Rey using a mind trick, twice. That said, I could forgive Han doing that stuff as it's similar to the Han shot first BS, overall, not a big story building moment. I was giving Rey the benefit of the doubt, hoping to get some explanation in TLJ.) I didn't enjoy the TLJ because I find much like the PT they had an opportunity to make something great but dropped the ball. Honestly, I like TFA less now that TLJ is out.

I hope Ep 9 makes things work, but as of now I'm not watching Ep 9 until I can watch it free at home, or if I read spoilers and the issues I have in the ST so far have been explained.

My first time watching the Star Wars saga was all over the place. I was 8 when the Phantom menace was released and I wanted to watch it in cinema because all my friends had already seen it. To understand what SW was all about my dad showed me ANH (my first SW movie). The day after I went to the cinema and saw TPM, back at home I continued with ESB and ROTJ. After that I watched AOTC and ROTS and the squel trilogy. I usually watch every SW movie once a year in chronological order (storywise). TLJ was a mixed bag for me. A good movie on it's own but an utterly disjointed sequel and a mediocre setup to IX since VIII already resolved all the conflicts and plotlines I was interested in after TFA. Depending on IX TLJ might improve but for the time being it's only a 6/10 in context with the SW saga as a whole.

    My ranking is:

    1. ESB/TFA
    2. ANH
    3. ROTJ/R1
    4. ROTS
    5. TLJ
    6. TPM
    7. AOTC
