Luke can be the Yoda, PT not OT, of this trilogy and doesn't need to save Rey all the time, she can fight her own battles but when he does step in you know "it just got real". Luke could, and should, survive this trilogy to become the first grand master of the NJO. No offense to Rey but it would just seem forced if she was left as the last Jedi and Luke pasted on verbatim Yoda's last request to him, that's exactly where the last trilogy left us and sequentially it just wouldn't flow well. The allusions/nostalgia for the OT in TFA were appropriate to bring audiences in and make them feel at home but surely people don't want to watch some mirrored version of the OT?

This seems to be like some kinda of mantra around here. We know, everyone knows, that Rey is the/one of the main characters/hero but that doesn't mean she has to do everything. Luke's journey didn't even end with him beating the emperor, his father did that, and Anakin didn't even have a hero's journey during the PT! Let's not let that "it's like poetry, it rhymes" rubbish get in the way of writing a good story.

We need to stop viewing this trilogy as self contained and look at it as part of a saga and that means not leaving the story at the same stage it was left at with the end of ROTJ: First Order defeated and Rey the sole Jedi left in the galaxy. Logically this trilogy should be about the early struggles of the New Republic and the resurgence of the Jedi which Luke is a vital part of.

    This. A thousand times this.

Exactly. If you write the new characters well then you don't need to worry about them being overshadowed.

Luke is basically yoda, and considering they are already hinting that both Rey and Kylo are going to be training in VIII, luke will not only have a good presence in VIII but will be needed well into IX

i was happy with the way that Han Solo signed off. not happy that he died... but i liked the way it happened. To discover that he wasn't Ben's father post death would be a kick in the teeth for me.
Plus... it would start to sound like a Jerry Springer episode lol

there is definitely more to come from Leia - that i completely agree with. Hopefully we'll get Luke/Leia on screen together soon.

welcome to the Cantina @Tiffanie1983 !

I have been waiting more than 30 years to see Luke Skywalker back on the big screen. I understand and agree with the notion of building up new characters for movies going forward. I am a fan of Finn. I look forward to him doing great things. But if Luke is relegated to a Yoda/Teacher role in this next trilogy, has no epic light saber battles (plural), and doesn't survive into the next trilogy I will be more disappointed than I was at the idea that Finn wasn't FS.

Luke doesn't have to be the centerpiece, I get that there are 3 new characters that will have to blossom, but Luke cannot be quietly mothballed and killed off. To me it's even ok if he sometimes over shadows Finn and Rey because we know his time in the series in finite. He'll be gone soon enough. Let that end, when it comes, be glorious and worthy of the character.

It's not for me. Just like it wouldn't have been if it'd happened in the OT. Obi Wan and Yoda shouldn't overshadow Luke in his own story, and Luke shouldn't either with Rey or Finn.

I love Luke and I hope that he's important. But I'm not letting fanboy nostalgia blind me either. His role should fit what works for this story, not because "I want to see him be awesome again because, I like him." Not that he couldn't get cool moments, but they must make sense.

I will be honest, I think the writers suck if they are not able to figure out how to use Luke.
I wrote something similar before the release of TFA, that I thought that Luke will only be on the island and don't leave it in ST.
(Anch-To could be his retiement home)
Maybe we get a few scenes where he trains Rey, then she leaves him.

I think Luke will survive this trilogy and probably make a cameo in a 4th trilogy if it's set not too far out from Episode IX

But PT Yoda had the OT ahead of him. Essentially, he had an role to play. In the OT after he trained Luke he no longer had a role and so joined the Force - leaving Luke to face the hero journey alone. And that is the important point. If Luke is always around then Rey won't ever get to finish the journey alone - a vital component of the hero journey. So for me it is inevitable Luke will either do a Kenobi/Yoda or be killed.

But Luke still went through the hero journey. It just connected with Anakin's which took place over 6 films. Luke still had to face Vader alone and overcome the dark side. If Luke had Kenobi or Yoda with him it wouldn't have worked. That's why they were killed off.

But we're just talking one element of the story here. Perhaps more Jedi will emerge? Perhaps Finn will be another member of the new Jedi Order? Many more could come out of the woodwork. Maybe Luke has been searching for Jedi hopefuls?

This will still be the new generation's story, but I'm sure Luke will figure in it very prominently. If nothing else, I'd to see him force-slap Kylo Ren into the middle of next week. There's almost bound to be a reckoning (not counting their exchanges on twitter :D).

This has been my Argument lately. Many have latched on to how amazing Rey is but they are very much afraid that she will be over shadowed by other characters moving forward. The problem is instead of wanting her to be the most important part of the story they want her to be THE STORY. The Transporter,Rambo,Rocky, Bond ect (not saying mary sue) but they entire focus of the narrative. Anakin was given that and the PT is his story...

They have truly set her up to be the one that can become strong enough to stop a cosmic force event from ripping the galaxy apart. However she can't fight The knights of Ren, KyloRen, Snoke , the first order fleet and do whatever magical universe altering thing she is supposed to do. Its ok if they all battle the knights, If Poe handles Thrawns fleet, If Finn battles Kylo, If Luke takes on snoke and she does whatever her magical universe altering event thing is. The movie Trilogy is STAR WARS not REY PWNS FACE

Luke will have a central role. It's being set up like this quite clearly. Yes, we have a new generation of heroes, but we also have the continuation of the story of which Luke Skywalker is central on so many levels. We already know that he is central in the events between ROTJ and TFA, so it's unavoidable that he will be central going forward.

His character still has his mission to complete to rebuild the Jedi. He even has a bit of a redemption story given his failure with Ben Solo. There is a lot left for him to do.

I also suspect there is something about the first Jedi Temple that is tied to his character. He went looking for it for a reason.

With Luke in the next movie we will see how strong a Skywalker can become, and we will get an idea of how strong Rey will become. To make sure the movie makes sense in relation to the other movies, Rey must ultimately become stronger than Luke. It is in the family.

People compare Luke to Obi Ben and Yoda in the OT a lot, and see Rey as the new Luke (OT) but I don't really see that being Luke or Rey's role. Rey has already proved herself more adept than Luke was at the end of ANH. I think a more interesting comparison (and one JJ made himself) is that its actually Kylo Ren who is this trilogy's Luke, only a mirror inversion of him.
And if thats the case, Luke takes on the role of Darth Vader essentially, the dangerous, near mythical, character that Kylo Ren is training to confront. So Luke could easily have the same amount of screen time as Vader did in the OT. I see Luke as the Antagonist, at least as far as Kylo's arc is concerned. That's Why Kylo lost against Rey, he's not ready. and its why I think he will fight Luke in Ep 8 and also in Ep 9. I know that doesn't work perfectly with how central Rey is, but I think her battle physically will be against the other knights of ren, and that her moral battle will be resisting Snoke, who will be after her in the new film....Where as Kylo will want to Kill Luke above everything else by the time this trilogy plays out I think, as Luke's the guy who killed Vader.

I think a good end would be if Luke tried to sacrifice himself ala Ben Kenobi so that Rey/Finn could escape, but instead of killing him Kylo should capture him and take him to Snoke so he can be turned. would set up a good premise for Ep9 where Luke gets tortured and Rey/Fin/Leia have to save him.

Good ideas but it removes finn from co-leads and takes poe out of the equation altogether. You did hit the nail on the head that no one is really asking.

Why did the man who defeated vader, run from ren and snoke. What is it at the first temple he is looking for. Could be how to unlock a new power, could be a weapon of the force ,could be how to stop something he unleashed or set in motion.

But I'm arguing that Luke does have a role ahead of him: the founding of the New Jedi Order. Luke's role in this trilogy shouldn't just be to train Rey but to oversee the training of multiple jedi because otherwise you render Luke's arc from the OT pointless. Luke represents the rebirth of the Jedi and the natural progression of his character is to complete this task. Whether that task will be completed within this trilogy is the question and that depends on how many years the trilogy is meant to span. However, I doubt that the Jedi Order will be established within this trilogy with enough time for Luke to lead it before dying, it's just too much story to fit in hence why I am of the opinion that it would be better for him to survive this trilogy.

Luke went through some version of the hero's journey and Anakin didn't go through a recognisable one at all. Did the prequels strike you as based upon the hero's journey? This seems to be a common problem with discussing the future direction of the ST, the story doesn't have to revolve around the hero's journey or even strictly follow its guidelines, especially if the story suffers. I'm sure that Rey will face Kylo and probably overcome, maybe even Snoke but Luke doesn't have to die for that to occur. In fact I'm not even sure that Snoke/Kylo/FO will be defeated in this trilogy.

Sure, its just one element of the story but I would argue that it is one of, if not the, main element of the ST. I would like Finn to be one of those new Jedi amongst others but how much time will there be for Luke to pass on his knowledge to them during this trilogy? That is the question. Is he just going to give them a few idioms and then be like "Rey will tell you the rest, she just figures this stuff out without a teacher anyway". I'm sorry but I just don't find Rey a convincing substitute for founding the NJO.

This does seem to be a problem with debating the future outline of the ST. Rey will be important I'm sure but she has to grow into that role and simply writing out the other characters or making the story stagnate so she can follow a "hero's journey" is not the best way to write a story or to continue the Star Wars universe. Rey's legend will be intertwined with Luke's as one of the famous names of the early NJO, a powerful leader of the new generation of Jedi Knights(hopefully Finn will also be one of these new masters).

This, all of this. Put more succinctly than I have managed.

Not so sure about you're ending with Luke being captured and turned but I certainly do like your interpretation of the ST. Kylo being the anti-Luke and following his journey to complete his training as a Dark Jedi/Sith and face his uncle: "You must face Luke Skywalker again". It's an interesting inversion of the OT. I'm not convinced that Kylo will remain evil by the end of this trilogy but I have heard him being referred to as the anti-Luke before.

I like to think that the failure of his Jedi school and the fall of his nephew has made Luke question himself and his suitability to pass on the Jedi legacy so he has fallen back to what he knows, which is to continue his training. Despite Yoda's words he's gone back to improving himself and the first jedi temple is where he thinks he'll uncover some inspiring wisdom. Perhaps he will or maybe he'll be reminded to face his fear of failure and overcome it.

If they are smart, they will have Luke in a supporting/mentor role in episode VIII about the size of Han Solo's in VII. Have him be a teacher, be involved in the plot, but the main struggles and focus of the story stay on Finn, Rey and Poe. They are the new Big Three.

In fact, I think Luke shouldn't even ignite his lightsaber until well into episode IX. Make it a HUGE event when it happens, like when Yoda did it with Dooku in II. They can have Luke either go down to Snoke and Kylo to leave Rey to deal with the struggle alone earlier in the movie, or at the end. Either way, Luke needs to die to pass the torch and for dramatic effect as well as to build up Rey. I'd be surprised if he died in VIII. I think they should keep him for all three films, and perhaps allow Leia to make some sort of sacrifice in the next film.

And I say this with Luke Skywalker being my all time favorite Star Wars character since I was three years old in 1977.

Do you REALLY think that Kylo Renn is Luke's NEPHEW. that is a sack of BS - - balogney sandwiches!!

Kylo Renn is RELATED ((very closely related)) to Luke, but he is not Luke's nephew.

No, Snoke will use force lasers (that's right lasers not lightning) on her which she will then suddenly be able to use whereupon she will spin like a glitter ball shooting out deadly force lasers killing Snoke, Kylo, KoR, FO and Starkiller 2.0 all while Anything You Can Do plays in the background.

Well, I'm merely saying what the film itself hit us on the head with several times which is that Kylo is Han and Leia's son. By all means continue your speculation that Kylo is actually Luke's son but at the moment the onerous burden of proving it, and it's a pretty difficult thing to prove at this stage, belongs to you.
