So apparently there is a female character named Qi'Ra (I've also seen Kira). What is it with this name? From what I recall in early TFA speculation days, Kira was the original name/codename for Rey. Any EU/TFA connections or did the team decide to utilize a discarded name?

    I've noticed this too.

Lucasfilm is most definitely using a discarded name. After Kira became Rey, Qi'ra is recycling.

Disney's not the only movie studio that recycles old ideas.
    Just saying.

"Kira" probably has to do with problems with different pronunciations in different countries. And it might also have meant something very rude elsewhere.
Kira could be pronounced as either "Keira" or "Ky-ra".

It may also be because of spelling. The Irish name Ciara is also correctly pronounced as "Kira/Keira". The US singer Ciara may be unaware that she has been mispronouncing her own name since birth, as she pronounces it as "Sierra" (see-air-ah).

There was a time when "Leia" (lay-er) was widely pronounced as "Leah" (lee-er) in the UK, as "Leia" was an unfamiliar name in the UK, before Star Wars.
This can be proven in A New Hope, Peter Cushing (as Tarkin) pronounces Leia as "Leah" in the Death Star control room scene.

Is it possible that Qi'Ra has such a profound effect on Han Solo that he later names his daughter Kira?

Wasn't Maz Kanata's code name "Rose"? Now we've got a character with the same name in TLJ. It's pretty normal to reuse old names and concepts.

It is simply re-using a name from old ideas as seems to be the consensus so far in this thread. I wouldn't look too much into it.

In Rebel Dawn, an old girlfriend, leader of a Rebel group, offers Han a shot at an incredible fortune--- but the Rebels have an agenda of their own... just maybe Kira???

Kira was the name Lucas had devised for the girl that is now Rey, and it was then used as a codename in the guided imagery phase (concept design based on Lucas's drafts prior to the writing of VII) and in subsequent production. They're now using it in Han Solo as an homage.

    Mystery solved.

I remember hearing that a planet named Utapau was repeatedly planned and then renamed, until the name finally made it into ROTS.

They do recycle names, but there are also just coincidences - for example, I don’t think Sabine Wren has any connection to the Knights of Ren.

    Or Kybo Ren from Droids.

And let's not forget there's been a Captain Antilles and Wedge Antilles, no relation, since the beginning.

They had a distant "ancestor" in Legends. His full name was Gir Kybo Ren-Cha.

Funnily enough though, one thing in real life you never really see in the movies (for obvious reasons), is people with the same first or last names. But in real life it happens. A lot. Much like 'not saying goodbye on the phone', 'switching the shower on whilst under it', 'having a conversation at a restaurant but never eating' , 'if they're coughing throughout the movie, they're secretly dying', 'switching on the tv to immediately discover a really relevant news broadcast' and 'there's always a parking space where you need it'; the trope of 'I only know one person with that name' is a classic only-in-the-movies slice of life. I've known 2 guys with the exact same first and last names, they weren't related or even remotely similar. I once had 5 people called Lee in my phone at the same time as 4 Kyles. I've dated 3 Michelles and 2 Lauras. I know a couple who are Nick and Nikki. And you know, that's just life. And yet put any of that in a non-comedy film and it would just be bizarre.

Unless it was a deliberate situational comedy, I can't think of a single serious movie or show where a character said something like the following for no reason except to provide realistic dialogue:

    "Dave called"
    - "Oh right, which Dave?"
"Er I dunno, he just said it was Dave and you'd call him back"
    - "But I know 3 Daves! What was it about?"
    "I don't know, he didn't say"
    - Ugh, well what was his voice like, was it kind of dopey sounding?"
"What do you mean dopey sounding?"
    - "like, you know, like he's a bit thick"
"I don't know, it was brief, I couldn't really say"
    - "Did he say what he wanted?"
"No he just said to call him back and that it wasn't urgent"
    - "great now I'll have to text all three. Next time get their surname"
    "Fine"

But that of course is exactly why it's not in the movies. Audiences would be going "what was the point of that stupid conversation?" if it didn't serve the plot except only to provide a slice of pointless reality. It's funny how we often moan about a lack of realism in movies and yet put too much in and it'd instantly be considered ridiculous.
