Boba Fett is so cool. I was hooked ever since I saw him in TESB. I have allot of legend comics and novels on Fett. Whenever I play Star Wars Battlefront thats the character I use. I don't think we're getting a Fett film anytime soon maybe an OB1. But hey, I'm welcomed to it! The way he went out in ROTJ, Fett has to be redeemed somehow.

I guess fans want to see Boba Fett get out of the sarlaac pit & carve a path of revenge across the galaxy hunting Han.

To understand Fett-mania, I think you need to look no further than last year's Captain Phasma. Cool armor, minimal dialogue, stone cold attitude, and... ultimately kind of disappointing. The difference, I guess, is that Phasma presumably still has a part to play in the New trilogy.

Fett was set up to essentially be to Han what Vader is to Luke, and early plans for the franchise actually had him as the villain of the third film, with the Empire being taken down in a sequel trilogy/trilogies. Looking back at how ESB left off, it does seem like that could've been a viable option- let Luke stir over his recent discoveries (Vader could haunt his mind without even physically appearing in the film!) while trying to save Han from the galaxy's most dangerous Bounty Hunter. In a way, I'm kind of disappointed we didn't get that movie.

It's totally strange Boba is basically scarce in the OT and people love him, but Captain Phasma had about as much screen time and people say she was under used, no screen time, etc.

So my point is I never understood the obsession with Boba either.

Boba means "silly" in Spanish and Fett is "fat" in German. Just sayin'

This is the closest to my own opinion. I grew up on the originals and even then, with little known about him, I knew he was going to be a bad-ass. Vader singled him out, the movie followed his character out of all the other bounty hunters, and his attitude was "no-messing-around" gruff. It is sad that he had such a terrible death, honestly I'm sure the Fett we know today could have found a way around that pit. Yes, his origins were a mystery to start, but his character was classic gunslinger.

For the duration of Empire, "Jabba" is this looming menacing presence hovering over Han's head - he has to "leave", to "pay his debts" to him.

So a silent masked hunter with a fearsome reputation (unnamed in that movie) comes to collect his soul - evoking images of Charon or the Grim Reaper as he quietly and stoically leads Han's "funeral procession" into the underworld.

The viewer is scared and intrigued to find out more about this ominous crime lord (who appears to be a bigger threat than simply some local mafia boss with hired thugs), how Han is going to escape this hellish trap if at all, and who this hired assassin is - whether he's his "servant", or a hired 3rd party with his own story and motivations, and how this all ties into the fact that the galaxy is basically being terrorized by these two relentless, evil forces.

That's his role in the movie, that's how his character and actions are stylized and conveyed on screen, and the essence of his appeal to viewers.

IMG_1182.JPG Seems that people either like him or hate him. Depends on his effect on the movie watcher. I bought into him as a kid in the 80's and like him even more today.
I actually use an original life size cardboard cut out of Boba Fett to place in my upstairs deck door window as kind of a "scarecrow" towards possible break ins!

I think "hate" is too strong a word. Rather, people either like him or are "meh" about him. I fall into that latter category and see him as being unimportant and uninteresting. But I'd never argue that fans of Boba Fett are somehow wrong to like the character, and I think it's fantastic that they do. We're a diverse group, we Star Wars fans.

Everyone has differing tastes, like I am not a big fan of Kylo Ren (I think it's more the casting) but I am a big fan of Boba. With me it's because he is so sparse in both ESB and ROTJ it makes you more intrigued about who he really is. Yeah we get a bit of history in the prequels but day to day Boba is still a mystery.

I never got where this Boba Fett - Han Solo rivalary thing came from. There is zero evidence or hints of it in the films.

No, it seems like people love everything about Empire, except for Boba Fett whom they either also love, hate, or are "meh" about.

If you just look at the movie, and this character as a part of that movie, the very idea that he's supposed to be the one element that is of questionable quality, or divisive, seems patently absurd, doesn't it?

Yet this is where we're at now, with "the fandom" eh.

(boba fett)(boba fett)(boba fett)I actually love Empire because of Fett. Maybe its because the 5 year old I was when I saw the movie back in 1980 hooked on to the mystery of him at that time and never let go.
...and then had to deal with his horrible death in Jedi.
So of course when I hear they may make a movie about him and that it might be about him escaping the sarlac pit, that 5 year old in me takes over and supersedes all reasoning and rational thought!

Man they missed the buck on this one, boba fett was loved by many, I wont repeat the reasons people have already mentioned but imagine phasma could have become the new fett. a shame really a cool character wasted.

For me, it would just be the awesome armor that he wears and that he's like the main bounty hunter that really means business. You don't want to get tangled up with him. There is also the unknown factor about him that I think fans like about him

I think it's because Fett is the only one among the bounty hunters in ESB who is able to think on a level with Solo. He guesses how Han will escape from the Imperial fleet; and more than that, he knows Solo's history well enough to guess where he'd go if looking for refuge. So much so that he brings Darth Vader and company to Bespin before the Millennium Falcon even arrives.

That's a classic way to set up a hero/villain antagonism: make the villain very spectacularly good at outwitting the hero. Larry Kasdan used much the same trick to develop Belloq in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Sure. But none of that indicates or hints at some great rivalry in the past.

Then you obviously missed the one thing that's definitely worth watching the Star Wars Holiday Special for, IMHO, i.e. the Nelvana animation film, that introduced Boba Fett to audiences and our protagonists before the premiere of ESB. ;)

He's a awesome character enjoying reading about him in Elizabeth Hand's books.
