If past accent-work in Star Wars is to be believed, it's to indicate Finn isn't aristocratic. Even the British-speaking Jedi worked on the capitol planet with politicians. Finn is far removed from that.

I think leaving the accent would have been cool but he is a storm trooper so there needs to be continuity with the story, so id say use the American accent :)
Just want all the movies to have continuity so the SAGA works better

They probably wanted one of their leads to have the Midwestern American accent, and maybe Boyega was the only one that could do it.

You're probably just sick of the accent because you're not as used to it; assuming you're an American (sorry for assuming if you're not!!). I'm Australian and have been hearing an American accent in 95% of films and television series I have seen so i've become accustomed to it. Americans would mostly hear their own accent in the media they watch so I guess it could be easier to get "sick" of another accent.

I am a huge football fan, and it took me YEARS to understand Rooney....and I still don't understand everything that he says.

I think they gave Finn that American accent because he is the hero. In a Star Wars film to have BOTH heroes with english accents would be a bit much.

Imagine John McClane or Snake Plissken with English accents?

And hoping again they don't make Rey too posh....because not being a seasoned actor like McGregor she may overdo it.

I don't care about accents you have to judge on the characters action not the way he or she talks.

People from the South: Is it just me or there a slight southern twist to John's accent?

That would more-or-less fit in with that weird English accent Leia seemed to start out with in ANH. Not sure if it was abandoned because they wanted to note the change from someone of the upper-class to a rebel fighter or if Fisher just couldn't perform it well enough, but it's there.

I haven't really heard that to be honest... It sounds pretty much General American to me. But I guess some of his original accent could seep through and confuse us to some extent.

Not to talk bad about our own accents, but I generally prefer the Southern accent to stay out of Star Wars. I mean it was okay with that one X-wing pilot that gets blown to bits, but long-term it gets a bit annoying... like that pig-nosed guy in TCW with the thick accent.

I think the Southern accent would work well with like a rogue type of character. Like the dude in Guardians of the Galaxy...Wondu or something....

Just to be clear for all of those who don't seem to get it...

Americans are the center of the universe and therefore don't speak with an accent. It is everyone else who can't get with the program. Geesh, why is this so hard.:p:rolleyes:

Heroes talk like they are from Iowa or Indiana, tough guys are from Texas or New York, those with learning disabilities are from Alabama, and self important jerks are from Boston or the UK, except for Soccer hooligans who are from Ireland or South London.

Nothing is wrong with american accents. I like them, and I like that most of the good guys have them in Star Wars, while most of the bad guys have British accents. There's something primal about it as an american adventure odyssey that compares the Rebellion to the american rebellion in the Revolutionary War, and the Empire to....well, the British Empire. They are America's oldest enemies, after all, even though realistically many of the american revolutionary war soldiers at that time likely still had British accents. XD

I believe that's what director Irvin Kershner even said he wanted to call to mind with Empire Strikes Back, where all the Rebels have american accents, while the Empire has British accents -- just one of the many things I love about Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back. :)

    Yup. And Padme in TPM.

It's a retcon, but that's the way it's been played off.

One more joke and I promise to stop ;)

Why did the sun never set on the British Empire?
Because God couldn't trust an Englishman in the dark.

    Modified for AGFFA:

Why did the sun never set on the Galactic Empire?
Because Midichlorians couldn't trust a Sith Lord on the Dark Side. (emperor)(dark)(vicious)

I'm curious to know how much different they are. I'm American, would it be comparable to a North and South difference?

I would say the South London accent is VERY different to the posh one. Very. It's a bit similar to what you would get in West London the cockney or North London. There's more slang to it and it's more rugged.

The difference between Southern slang and Northern slang in America is the same as the Posh accent and the South London/Cockney accent.
