Of course an Imperial General would want nothing more than for the Ewoks to be crushed! :D

I don't dislike them but would've made more sense if they had been Wookiees instead.

They're cute and goofy and part of a movie I love. I hate them nonetheless.

"They're not teddy bear, they're an alien equivalent."

"Do they come in trees, cause I need to squeeze them."

I have always liked Ewoks, and these rhymes strengthen it. :D

Ewoks represent the idea that a short primative species can overpower a more technologically advanced species and society and not be handicapped by the percieved lack of advanced culture, height or technological status. Its all about the fight and struggle and is another of George Lucas's moral tales.

I think Ewoks have gotten more offensive because the PT.

The reason being what the Ewoks are supposed to represent. Lucas was using the typical 'Primitive Natives vs. Advanced Invader/Occupying Force' motif. In that way, the Ewoks do work in a narrative sense, even thought visually it was puzzling to see teddy bears take down a legion of the Emperor's "best troops" LOL....smh.

But the reason why Lucas didn't use Wookies is documented. He didn't think that the particular motif would work after demonstrating how proficient wookies were with technology. Chewie was a great co-pilot and mechanic and proficient with advanced weaponry. So Lucas didn't think the motif worked anymore and came up with little furry mammalians (oh my, how original....).

Regardless, yes, the motif worked in 1983 and the reasoning was sound.

Then, 15 years later, that reasoning is completely ignored, thus signaling Lucas had really lost some perspective.

He re-uses the motif, which is fine and appropriate for a SW movie, in TPM. Again, the motif itself should work. The Gungans should be the primitive native force that is able to hold off the Trade Federation droids.

But.....the same reasoning that prevented wookies from being used, was completely ignored. The Gungans use advanced ray shield technology, have electro-staffs perfectly suited to fend off robots, they have ion bombs and personal shields....not to mention all the underwater technology. Its bizarre that details like that were ignored.

So I think that when we look at what SW became during the PT, with a lot of muddled themes that took Legends novels to better explain (although they may have repeated that sin with Catalyst/Rogue One), and a betrayal of prior narrative logic, then we look at the Ewoks and retroactively blame them more than we really would have if the PT didn't commit related sins. That's just my perspective.

I never precisely hated them. The Prequels may have soured me on them because of their narrative similarities to the Gungans. But I became less forgiving of them when I learned that George based them on the Viet Cong. Which leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Yeah, I actually really liked how the ewoks were used in ROTJ. I get that it might seem odd having them take on the Empire's "best troops", but it's definitely meant to represent that struggle of technology vs will.

In the prequel trilogy, I think the Gungans sort of symbolized this, but in a different way. Clearly the droids were more technological than even the empire was, but you're totally right that the Gungans were more advanced than the Ewoks. It's not that the Gungans lacked tech, it's just that their ways were very different than the Naboo and the Trade Federation. While the Trade Fed brought in big clunky tanks and droids, the Gungans had attached shield generators to big monstrous beasts of their swamps, and rode horse-like creatures while wielding electric staffs. In a way, I think this is sort of an update on the "Native American" allegory, in that while the Gungans' technology wasn't the same as their adversaries, they were still quite capable and had done things their own way- it's not so much that they were savages, but simply a different culture.

And for the record, I think the Gungans get a ton of hate when in reality Jar Jar is the main reason people don't like them. Don't be racist- hate the Jar Jar, not the species. :p

I guess I'm dead inside. There's nothing wrong with the Ewoks or any of the characters specifically created for kids. They've never really appealed to me. That's all.

I can deal with Jar Jar a lot better than the Ewoks.

Ewoks are not my cup of tea, I do not overly hate them mind, I can see the appeal some have for them. Ewoks and Fett's silly 'death' are what annoy me from ROTJ. I suppose I just prefer more adult SW themes.

Saying that, the celebration on Endor at the end looked like a right laugh! :D

Maybe they're seen as a little childish, but I have no issues with them. I'm quite fond of the little critters, actually.

    So perfectly said.

    Personally, I love them.

Star Wars reminds us more than once that no one is to be underestimated.

    Ewoks in Star Wars:

    - Ewoks represent the triumph of the underpowered over the technological superiors, Nature over Technology
    - Ewoks are just G Lucas playing Cowboys and Indians with the Empire Stormtroops
    - Ewoks are just a merchandising Gimme It targeted to younger audiences (Lucasfilm are Cashing In)

(pick your favorite answer from the above because i believe they're all right)

But why is everyone always forgetting that Ewoks were aiming to eat on the Rebels, they are a bunch of cute man eaters.
