WARNING THIS IS A SPOILER THREAD FOR THE FIRST BOOK IN THE WHEEL OF TIME SERIES

So having watched the first season of the Amazon Wherl of Time show I decided to purchase the first 3 books in the series (there are 14 in total) & having just finished Book 1 The Eye of the World I thought I would start a thread to get other members option on the book plus how they think it compares to the TV show.

First off as this is a 30 year old novel it holds up surprising well it certainly didn’t feel like something written 30 years ago well at least to me.

Personally I actually found something to like in all the main characters yes they all have flaws ( well maybe apart from Lan :)) & the TV show has done a pretty good job of keeping there characters tru to the book even with them being aged up for the show ( which is probably a good thing).

One thing that did surprise me was how much the tv show changed things from the books now this mainly happened after the Taren Ferry now a lot of times this makes sense for a TV show to combine several locations into one & have sever events occur at one location then have a different location for each event ( This mainly effects Ran & Mat & there journey after Shadar Lagoth )

However I’m not sure removing ( at least in season 1) Caemlyn from the show &replacing it at least in part with Tar Valon was a good thing as the events there seem like a rather important part of the story

& I’m also really torn on the ending as while I enjoyed both I felt that the book one was stronger plus they are quite different so it will be interesting to see how that plays out in both future books & season’s.

I also really liked Book 1's ending as a whole. Season 1's ending for Rand is drawn from the books, but saying anything other than that is a spoiler. So, RAFO!
I'm really curious how they'll start Season 2 and explain Nynaeve being healed, in all honesty. That felt like a Deus Ex Machina, and maybe they'll justify it by saying it was exactly that.

You're not alone in feeling that way. I personally have a theory as to why they cut this part, and what's going to happen with it.

IIRC, in Book 1 when Rand and Mat get to Caemlyn, Rand meets Elayne and is brought before Queen Morgase and Elaida, who has a big Foretelling. This is one of the many hints that clues us into the fact that Rand is TDR. Since the show decided to go for the mystery angle, it had to cut out any pieces that would make it too obvious. However, as shown with Tam's rambling, it's not always the case that things are cut out and left to rot. Sometimes, things are cut out and repurposed somewhere else. That's what I think is going to happen with Caemlyn. (Especially since they already cast Elayne.)

I think that in Season 2, Rand is going to find himself in Caemyln and be brought before Queen Morgase and Elaida, where Elaida will still have her big Foretelling. Rand will try to deny it, much like in the books, although instead of trying to claim to be a "simple farmer," Rand here will try to assert that his job as TDR is done, so there's no more use for him. It'll fail, of course, since his job isn't done. Rand will eventually meet up with Mat, and from Caemyln they'll go on The Great Hunt. (Which I have a feeling will be combined with Book 3 for Rand's stuff.)

Nonsense! Lan has a flaw. It's called being too perfect! ;)

So let’s talk about Perrin Now as much as I liked his character in the show I think I prefer the book take & certainly having a lot more details on his wolf connection is a big reason for this I know the show has to cut down on some thing but this seems such a huge part of who he is I was surprised at just how much of this part of his character was cut back ( now we may get more of this in the second season ) also Elysa is a big part of him becoming a wolf brother & he is completely absent fro the show.

Yeah, Elyas being absent was a weird choice. The rest of the cuts I can mark up to fitting into the "Who is the Dragon Reborn" angle the show went with, but...Perrin's a hard character. For the first few books, he's the absolute BEST of the three Taveren. His arc is mostly internal, though, which can be a slog to read through and an even harder thing to put onto screen. I'm not entirely happy with the direction the show went, but hopefully Season 2 can work on this.
