To be fair, Leia could have thought they're siblings from different parents, step siblings, something else all together...OR deluded herself into thinking that until she butted up and married Han Solo finally .

Here is the extract from the book "Star Wars A New Hope: The Princess, The Scoundrel and The Farm Boy" (Young Adult Novelization of ANH):

"You know that's impossible, a small voice whispered in her mind. Nothing would bring her home back. No amount of bargaining would fix this. It was over.

They must have dragged her back to her cell. Leia didn't remember. Her legs gave out the moment she was through the cell door. The next thing she knew, her cheek was pressed against the cold metal grating on the floor. Her fingers curled around it, but Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan, for the first time in her life, couldn't bring herself to push herself back onto her feet.

Princess Leia. Were you still a princess if your home world was gone?

In a matter of hours, she'd lost her position in the Senate, her home, and every plan she'd made. For the first time in her life, Leia didn't know what to do. The senator didn't have a plan. The princess didn't have a history. All that was left was just... Leia.

She closed her eyes, trying to picture her parents' faces. Her body shook with the effort to keep her tears back. She folded the pain away, the anguish. She had to. She'd made a promise to her father as he'd seen her and the crew of the Tantive IV off that last time: I won't fail you. But hadn't she?

No. No. Leia pushed her chest off the ground, sitting up. Failing would be giving up. Because somewhere out in the desert there was a droid carrying the hope for the future inside of him. There were allies counting on her, allies who needed to know the truth about the Death Star and the tremendous danger they were in. It wouldn't be the same, but she could still fight. She had a place with the Rebel Alliance.

Leia took a deep breath, her father's voice whispering in her mind. Taking on all of these responsibilities... they've shaped you into a glittering star. (...)

She stood up, straightening to her full height, and began to look around her cell again, searching for her out. They could think they'd taken the parts of her that mattered most. That they'd broken her. But there was a part of Leia that the Emperor, Vader, Tarkin, any of them could never touch.

Her heart was a star that would never burn out."

Here is another excerpt from the book that mentions how she deals with grief (when trying to comfort Luke when he's sad about Ben's death):

"Blast it. What am I doing?" Luke said, sitting up. "You just lost your whole planet-"

"Loss is still loss," Leia said, her voice tight. She glanced away. "We just can't let it beat us. We have things to do."

"How are you so... okay?" he asked. "I feel like-in the past day, I've lost my only family, and now Ben. I've never been off my home world before, and now I'm a million kilometers away from it. It's like I've been knocked out of orbit and I don't know how to get right side up again. How do you do it?"

A wave of pain crossed Leia's face. She bit her lip, drawing in a deep breath. "I want to cry," she admitted, "all the time, every moment. But I know that if I start I won't be able to stop, and that's not useful right now. "

Wow, so the book does elaborate on her feelings very well. I always thought those scenes in a new hope were a bit neutral in their emotional quality, but this is just beautiful. Great post!

Thanks! I was hesitant to read that book since I thought it was going to be basically like watching ANH again, but this author surprised me. She wrote the story from the movie in three parts - each one narrated in third person - from the perspective of Leia, Han and Luke. A pleasant surprise.

I saw grief in Leia's face when she felt Han dying, the first time since TROTJ, the loss of Han would be unbearable.

I would have to say it was Empire when Leia was in utter shock to see Han frozen in carbonite.

Now I'm very curious about how she, the author, describes Luke's grief over seeing the deaths of Owen and Beru and the torched homestead. I might go and read it. I've read all the novelizations of the prequels, because I knew them to be far superior to the actual movies. I read The Force Awakens adaptation, but instead that one was far inferior to the actual movie, precisely because it lacked the emotional subtext the A New Hope novelization displays as you have shown above. I think I will try my hand on those original trilogy novelizations. Did you read all three of them?

From all this years watching SW(ALL 7 movies)for me Princess Leia is ONE of a kind character.NEVER in my life a have see a woman in a movie than can show a CALM personality with ALL the "things" that happen to her in this saga.Even to fell in love with Han Solo she NEVER show that she like Han Solo BUT Han Solo know and feel that SHE was in love with him. They REALLY make a GREAT couple and the love between them WAS a TRUE one.Han Solo really understand her very well.I enjoy watching them together. In resume....Leia(General Organa) is a STRONG character and we are going to see her in action against General Hux in battle conflicts. This will be GOOD...;).

Not yet, I have them on my list :D struggling to decide what's next between them and the other new books (Before the Awakening, Lost Stars and Aftermath). Regarding Luke's grief, it is also well portrayed - not at the exact moment that it happens, since it is during Princess Leia's part of the book - but it is mentioned during Luke's section and it was endearing as well.

I couldn't agree more. She is definitely one of a kind. And I struggle when people asks me which female character do I prefer, either Leia or Rey, because both of them are cool in their own sense. So I choose both lol.

I'm there with you, my friend.

And cannot help but think of this exchange in the Death Star:

(luke) Luke: "But they're going to kill her!!"
(han) Han: "Better her than me!"

    Oh my.

When I read comments saying that the interactions of Han and Leia felt nothing like in the OT, I don't know what those folks are talking about. The only difference I see is that they have aged, but that's it.
